Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

So I had some time to kill and I wanted to test my theory that most of the frees seemed to be in our defensive half. Like the whistle just disappeared when we were attacking and then came out in force when St Kilda were in their forward half.

Keep in mind we had 36 Inside 50s to their 41, so they didn't dominate the forward entries.

There were 15-21 free kicks St Kilda's way.

St Kilda had 5 frees inside their attacking 50 to our 0.
St Kilda had 12 frees and 2 50m penalties in their attacking half to our 6 attacking half frees and 0 50m penalties.
St Kilda kicked 4 goals from frees to our 0.

To simplify it, St Kilda are always kicking to the left of the map.

Here is a breakdown of what the frees were, i've mainly left my opinion of the free kick out of it, because i'm not trying to argue that specific frees weren't there, i'm trying to argue that the whistle came out a lot more in advantageous positions for the Saints. I've also named the Port player involved for the most part, whether they got the free or gave it away. Saints frees in red, ours in black.

Our Forward 50 is like the vegetable patch at Chernobyl. Nothing grows there.

Ken's comments were the best thing he's said in 5 years. If anything, my only issue is that he didn't go hard enough.

I'll chip in a few bucks to cover his fine (and then I'll chip in a few more bucks to pay out his contract and sack him, but that's unrelated).

It was good to hear him speak out but he still let them off the hook. It was one way bad umpiring.

Unlike the crows crowd who boo umpires off the ground even with a favourable free kick count, I've never heard a Port crowd go off like that at the end of the game. And it was only half-strength!

Yes, you have.

Round 19, season 2017.

Ryder to Gray.

And one of the three canaries was # 12.

The problem we have is we assume the game is aiming to be fair.
We are the small town hicks expecting others to behave the way we do.

At some point we need to realise who we are dealing with, people in Melbourne don't have the same values as us country bumpkins, its win at all costs and get away with whatever you can.

Its time to fight fire with fire.
We have to stop being pushed around.

If/when the AFL fine Hinkley, they should be doing the same with S Goodwin, absolutely slammed the use of review system (he's also right saying that) just like Hinkley was right in saying what he did.

Also Clarkson should be copping a fine for labelling an opposition player a diver in a press conference!

He actually looks like a Saints player as well. I remember this clown from previous reamings. He is either a cheat or one of the most incompetent umpires they have, and that is saying something.

Just imagine, if this Andrew Stephens guy is quarantined in SA, we will get him umpiring us every home game.

Lol f king amazing, so Kane saying AFL considering sanctioning Ken for his comments.

2a: a consideration, principle, or influence (as of conscience) that impels to moral action or determines moral judgment
b: a mechanism of social control for enforcing a society's standards
3: an economic or military coercive measure adopted usually by several nations in concert for forcing a nation violating international law to desist or yield to adjudication
4: a coffee with Gil for the purpose of altering interpretations of the rules of AFL football in favour of the complaining Melbourne based AFL coach (or 'Clarko')
5: an apology issued to a Melbourne based AFL coach following complaints made about the standard of umpiring during a recent game (not you Ken)

Set up a crowd chant.

”THIEVIN’ STEPHENS THIEVIN’ STEVENS THIEVIN’ STEPHENS ... ... ...”

He’ll get the message.

The commentators will get the message.

The AFL will get the message.

It’s called Noise of Condemnation.

Here we go. lucky we've already played them.

They play the Hawks this week....umps will be confused, between Carlton sooking and Clarko sooking, who do they pay all the frees to.

My problem is not just with the interpretation but with the rules themselves. The holding the ball rule is plain ridiculous the player who actually goes and gets the ball is penalised while he who stands and waits gets the rewards. The sudden death nature of this rule has meant that there are simply too many free kicks. On top of this there are the number of rule changes and the AFL's decisions to change rules and interpretations mid season. How is an AFL Coach supposed to keep up with it?

On the subject of umpires they are sacred cows these days. The media do not highlight their mistakes or call their judgement into question.

I have no doubt that the AFL have been influenced by television and today's 'softer' society. They have engineered an over sanitised game free from criticism of umpires and minimising the prospect of legal action on the off chance that a footballer gets hurt playing a sport that no one twisted his arm to play in the first place. As a result the rules get changed regularly and umpires are regularly instructed to change their interpretations.

Australian Rules Football is almost at the 'field basketball' stage, pretty soon body contact will be outlawed altogether. If the Coaches do not stand up against these issues the game as we know it will be lost forever. At least Ken Hinkley has made a stand of sorts and I cannot knock him for that.

None of what Kane says surprises me with the bunch of campaigners that run the AFL but I would be surprised if Ken gets fined as he hasn't come out and criticised any individual. He has simply echoed the point that several other Coaches have made about the 'confusion' in the rules. Alistair Clarkson on the other hand did not pull any punches and was more specific and said outright that the Swans had, 'an extra player on the field'.

lol @ the idea ken will get a fine. or that he gave the umps a "rocket". all he said was "yeah i reckon u cant change da rules every week or it gets confusing". the lightest "spray" in post-match presser history

What he should have said they were dead set cheats! I'd help with the fine too!
