I know its be nice to umpires week this week and they didn't cost us the game last night but last night I saw the biggest individual example of bias umpiring against the crows in all my time of watching football.

Did anyone notice the non-holding the ball decision that should of been paid to Walker in the goal square in the last quarter when tex tackled the north melbourne player, spun him around 360, player dropped the ball it fell out to Douglas who was then tackled. Result holding the ball against Douglas.

What a joke. Umpiring has to be fairer than that.

Even blind Freddy would have to say that was either a case of total incompetence by the umpire in question or just plain cheating.. It was so impossible to miss that even the Vic-centric Foxtel commentators highlighted it both verbally and by replay.

Another shocking example of incompetence or turning the blind eye, was the 50 metre penalty not paid to us when a NM player ran across the mark - also in the last quarter, which would have given us a shot at goal from about 20 out if paid as it should have been. Once again the Foxtel boys both commented on it and had it replayed to demonstrate it.

While none of this cost us the game, as we managed to be pathetic in our own right, that umpiring performance certainly made it very clear to me that:

a) generally the Vic team always gets the better deal from the white/red/green/yellow maggots

b) Crows players do not have necks which negates the umpire having to worry about paying around the neck to Crows players.

Appreciation day of umpires my arse.

I noticed it and the commentators briefly mentioned it. There were numerous poor decisions that were not paid and a few that were paid but ultimately the they had no impact on the result. We were lucky to have gotten that close to North

I said this in another thread but the standard of umpiring in the AFL is nothing short of pathetic. The amount of stupid, tiggy-touchwood frees paid is ludicrous. I would love to know the average number of games of Aussie Rules the average AFL umpire has played at ANY level. Surely someone who has PLAYED the game would not pay these stupid technical frees all the time. I can't stand how they constantly try and impose themselves on the game by paying little frees and by being so technical about everything. Not to mention those 50m penalties they give for players being "demonstrative":rolleyes::rolleyes:, (players can't even show basic emotions when they give frees away now). They need to leave their egos in check and be unbiased adjudicators. The less we notice them, the better.

One that peeves me off is when a player gets a free, on the wing for example, he goes to kick it then the stupid umpire calls it back because he needs to come back over the mark by over 10cms! WHO CARES!!! If their wide of the mark by 3m or something then fair enough but half the time its some petty margin of about 30cm. Not to mention the holding the ball rule is rubbish, on Friday night on at least two occasions a Collingwood player tackled a Fremantle player, sat on him, held it in (the Collingwood player even actually took the ball off the Freo player) and he was pinned, even though replays showed the Freo player didn't even have possession of the ball after being tackled.

AFL umpires want respect then they must earn it. Australians, in general, hate to think a person is a protected species and above reproach, and AFL umpires clearly are, we rarely hear them being accountable for their decisions. Us Aussies tend to not mind people making mistakes, as long as they are able to admit it and are accountable for their decisions... but the AFL and umpires constantly hide from accountability. I would have so much respect for umpires if they just let the little stuff go, admitted their mistakes and were open to criticism.

One of the biggest free's missed last night was that tackle from Tippo on Cunnington in the middle. Cunnington took a few steps and was dead for all money, play on was called

Umpiring was but a pimple on the problems we've got at the moment. Maybe if we stuck more than one tackle a game we'd get a few more frees for starters.

biggest inconsistency stretch of 'prior opportunity' i've ever seen in a match probably

re; tony armstrong in the forward 25 vs. the mentioned tackle by walker, and a few others

also the new kid who ACTUALLY DID take a mark (via replay) but wasn't given the benefit of the doubt as would usually happen, inside 50.

go vegan

Was that Schmidt's mark in the D50 in the first quarter which ended up resulting in a goal? If the ump didn't want to pay the mark he could've at least made it a ball up. There were a few horrible calls out there tonight and it's really sad to see it happening to be honest.

That particular decision, if it happened at Footy Park, may well have resulted in the first ever homicide scene on an AFL football field.

It actually took me back to the shit we used to have to put up with from the Vic umpires in Melbourne pre the premiership years. The kind of umpiring that resulted in many destroyed household CRT televisions sets back in the day.

That decision was an absolute disgrace, and that umpire should be dropped for a couple of weeks. It was a blatant free - even North Melbourne supporters around me were amazed the free wasn't paid!

Also, just one question - for an interchange, does a player have to come off the field completely before the new player comes on? I saw three instances of North Melbourne interchange players running onto the field clearly (a good 3-4 seconds) before the player they were replacing was off the field?

The umpiring decision that pissed me off happened right in front of me.
Norf player kicked it OOF and another Norf player volleyed it in frustration down the line. That my friend is a 50m penalty. Resultant play Norf get a goal.

They should be sponsored by guidedogs and not OPSM:thumbsd:

I know how many of you still listen to 5AA, but today Roo was doing the Port / Carlton game on Triple MMM.... the number of times in that game the comment was " I don't think I appreciate that decision" in reference to Umpire Appreciation week... Thank God he wasn't doing last night's ...he would have had coniptions at what went on out there against the Crows.

Seriously, flick "5AA scream and shout" and do yourselves a favour and go to Triple MMM.

The part I hated was when a roos player kicked it out on the full and as it went over the line a roo player kicked the ball away on the volley in disgust/disappointment....this is, always was, always will be, a 50m penalty. But not last night and it would have been a comfortable shot for goal for us.

EDIT: just noticed the top post:thumbsu:

I certainly did not appreciate the umpires' efforts this round :thumbsd: and not just in our game either. They were pretty woeful across the board this weekend.

How it wasn't holding the ball when Tippett ran down the North player from behind on the wing I will never know.

Its just all so inconsistent... its pretty pathetic for such an organisation.
