Collingwood built a team around the under 19's in the 80s. We were confident of success.

Nowadays; the under 18's competition is alive and kicking.

Malthouse and Hine have recruited for the future - they've looked ahead rather than drafting short-term. And these youngsters played with one another or have close links in which they know each other. If it pays off for Collingwood this is smart recruiting.

Brown and Reid : Vic Country teammates and study in the same school.

Pendlebury and Brown : Ex Basketball teammates.

Pendlebury and Thomas : Gippsland Power teammates.

Heath and Rhyce Shaw : Close brothers.

Cook and Nicholls : Dandenong Stingray teammates.

There's probably more combinations but that will do for now. Any thoughts?

It looks to me with some picks that we really draft, based on what a kid could go the following year and on their potential, not necessarily current ability, given our number of underage players in last 2 years.

Ryan Cook and Danny Stanley last year could have been highly touted this year.

Ben Reid has been spoken as a probable No.1 next year.

Although Goldsack is overage, so he's a very interesting selection.
