Actually, they didn't. Unless you are someone who judges a band by one song, and not their total catalogue.

And regardless of what of you think of SM, it finally got them a bit of exposure. Which alerted many people, including me, to FoW's existence. So i am thankful for that song.

I remember reading about their cover of Baby One More Time.

They recorded it in 1999 I think, the year the Utopia Parkway album came out. (I can't recall if it was recorded before or after UP).

Anyway, their record company was pressuring them to release it as a single - despite them writing and recording extremely radio friendly material themselves.

The band was understandably confused and probably annoyed.

Great melody maker, singer, lyricist, producer and guitarist.

Either under-rated, and/or forgotten, by all but his fans.

A few years back he dusted off the vault and released 12 of his unreleased demos from years past. This was one of them. This gives you an idea of the quality of his music, if a song like this can sit around unreleased for years.

Great song, unfortunately it often gets mentioned in the "worst songs of the 70s" lists. I guess you had to be there.........

Bill and Taffy were seasoned musos and co-wrote Take Me Home Country Roads years earlier with John Denver. He returned the favour by signing the Starland Vocal Band to his new record label.

I just looked up Taffy Nivert. She's 80.

As an 80s kid who grew up with the shite Peter Cetera version of the band I'd nominate early Chicago. Great horn section and Terry Kath is something else.

Chicago were a much different band back in the early 70s to the early 80s version that's for sure.

Eleventh Dream Day.

Solid US Alt Rock band floridly described in Trouser Press as "trashy ’60s psychedelia with a drop of country-western blood".

They've released over a dozen albums from the mid 1980's onwards, mostly on independent labels, but really dropped off the radar after a 3-4 album deal with Atlantic Records in the early 90's.

4th major label album for Atlantic Records called "El Moodio" was rejected in its original form and the band were told to rerecorded it to get it released, which they did, but it was junked to the cut out bins. The original version of it was released again about a decade ago as "New Moodio" - as good a starting point as any.

Totally get what you mean about Ace of Base, they had some massive hits that still get stuck in my head, but they rarely get the credit they deserve when people talk about 90s pop. It’s weird how some bands get overshadowed even if they shaped the sound of an era. I’d add bands like Smash Mouth or Semisonic, huge back then but kinda forgotten now.
