Is this really news? I mean, I went to an historic college at one of the sandstones fifteen years ago and I'm not that surprised by any of this stuff.

John's has a garbage culture but as I'm sure a lot of people here can attest, most of the prestigious residential colleges around Australia are not a lot better.

Makes you wonder what other open secrets are out there that journos can't be bothered to report on.

Everyone at my uni (unless you were at the AMC) just went to class and then went home. Thought this sort of stuff was only in movies.

Yes it’s news because it’s 2018 and privileged dickheads that do this shit should be outed. Not that it’s going to matter because the boys club will represent them and then give them jobs.

Girls bullying can be bad, it’s all mental.

But I don’t really get the blokes. How does an 18 or 19yo get bullied by people a year or two older than him? Surely anybody who tries serious “hazing” gets told where to go or alternatively cops a more direct physical response.

You're brushing off the pressure to conform to group norms that are heavily backed by tradition, which is significant in exclusive organisations where group membership carries a large amount of prestige.

There is a reason that perverted crap like this is mostly found in crusty old establishment places. If you don't wear it, you're not "the right stuff".

My high school cricket team

At a camp most the guys wanted to show eachother everyones dick, Sweet ruse if you wanted to see a bunch of teenagers dicks. But i wasnt really for it

Was continually called a ****** for not showing 17 guys my dick. Never really got it.

A year or two ago at uni (as a thirty year old) some deadshit was punching durries directly in front of a no smoking sign in a sitting area at my uni. Was just him, me and a very weedy young bloke there at the time, waiting for classes. I politely asked the guy to at least move away and he goes off about fighting the system or some shit. I get triggered because ****o didn't do what I said, and I'm a prideful dick, so a verbal stoush ensues that only just comes short of me telling the campaigner I'd break his face. Old mate eventually ****s off, but not before bringing the young bloke into it and asking if he was bothered, to which he meekly says no and goes back to his computer screen. After the guy leaves, the kid next to me finally pulls his head out of his laptop and says "Thanks for that and sorry for not saying anything. It's my first week and I don't want to make enemies".

It's all too easy for us older people to say "Why would you put up with that?" with the benefit of lived experience. I was never as bad as the kid in my story, but gave in to peer pressure too much at his age. Hopefully he learned something from wise old ShanDog's sage advice after lol

I don’t mean to brush it off, I guess I just don’t understand it at all.

I can see it happening in schools of course, or even workplaces where very senior people could be involved. But this stuff looks like student-to-student trouble. University campuses have an extremely narrow group of people in terms of age and experience... I’m stuffed if I know how it develops to an extent where one has power over another to do stuff like this. Why don’t they just get told to **** off?

I guess so. I dunno, I just don’t see how intimidating a 20yo can be over an 18yo.

Pecking orders get established at school well before people go to uni. They carry that belief along with them a lot into University I imagine - if you're a weedy nerd type who gets picked on in high school or always avoids any type of confrontation, it will be your default setting going into uni. You carry that sort of self image with you for a long time. I can definitely attest to that.

Suppose it depends how many guys there are - it’s pretty difficult to take back control of a situation if you are talking 5 or more guys.

It was the same when I was a student. Mostly it went on between the first years and some of the older blokes who joined/ran the student clubs. But it was easy to avoid. Just stay clear of the student run 'O(rientation)-camps', which are really just excuses for the older blokes to try and hook in with the starry-eyed girls straight out of high school.

They actually filmed the shenanigans that went on and showed it to us in a first year lecture. One of them involved a chick blowing a dude in an industrial fridge (without the X-rated material), which went on to become a talking point around most of the university including staff.

After the first few weeks, students get to choose whoever they want to hang out with. Its not a bubble like high school unless your course has a tiny cohort with lots of contact hours, like dental school. Doubt those people hanging out in Japanese or chess club are knee deep in hazing rituals. That said, the Chinese society was the most loose club on campus - probably due to all that repression from strict parents.

I would say something pretty serious happened with the bloke who committed suicide (which sadly is unsurprising in an alcohol fueled environment). Its not from being hit by a thong...

Residential colleges are a pretty different ecosystem to your average uni student's experience. More like boarding school sans teachers than anything else.

A lot of shared space and time in colleges, I'd imagine it's pretty easy to make someone's life miserable if they didn't play your stupid games

This is bizarre. Did the rest all still do it anyway?

I've played cricket for 15 years and been on plenty of camps - never once did this even get close to being suggested.

I never went to uni/college so I'm probably sheltered from it a little bit but I've been surprised to see just how bad it's been over a long period of time.

It's not so much the drinking peer pressure that concerns me (although that's dangerous in it's own right) but there seems to be an incredible amount of sexual harassment/assault involved in these places. To put it bluntly, that's ****ing disgusting to me. I hate to think of some of the torment people have been through after some of the stories I've read recently.
