Stubhub is great. You pay a little extra but if you want good seats thats the place to go!

Love San Fran.
Lots of homeless and some people can find the amount of outwardly gay people confronting but its a great city.

Probably not my favourite place because of the climate and homeless people and it seemed dirty but I think we stayed at the wrong end of town and only for 2 nights.

Will have to go back there some time and spend a few more days there.

I did find it strange that it was meant to be the hippie loving lefty town and yet there were far more homeless/drug ****ed people than any other place we went to in the US....

Only got to spend two nights in San Fran when we went over there. First night we got there about dark and second night we went to a 49ers game. Got to spend a bit if time around fishermans wharf during the day

Would have liked to spend some more time there but time didn't permit as I wasn't expecting the city to be all that flash so didn't allow for more tome there in the itinerary

Who provides in flight wifi?

For those who are young-ish.....I'm all over loving Austing, been there once and loved it, would wife the city. Any other places where it's young, vibrant, lots to do, college girls, accent works a trat, not so many fat American's with fast food, good restraunts, cafes etc?

Thanks

Off to the States on Monday, my first overseas trip. Spending some time in New York before heading to LA to join a Contiki tour with a mate that goes through San Fran, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon etc....getting bloody excited (and nervous). Best tips for staying safe/not getting shit stolen? Or are the streets of New York in particular pretty easy going?

You never know with anything really. We were out until 2am pretty much every night in Manhattan and never felt threatened, never saw anything bad at all. Mind you this was mostly Mid Town which is tourist infested. How you would go out in the boroughs or even further up or down town, I have no idea.

Best thing seems to be travel in groups, don't have valuables in sight at night. During the day, just have a wallet and put it in a front pocket. Bags with valuables in them are easy to grab when you are unaware or put them down to rest, and I have heard stories of straps being cut with Stanley knives.

I think you would be more at risk in LA frankly.

Thanks for the advice mate! I guess just looking after yourself as you would anywhere, is probably the key.

Just a couple more questions, what do you guys think is best to do about a phone while over there? Only travelling for about a month and wont be calling anyone back home i wouldnt have thought, so would I get away with using international roaming on my iPhone just for internet use? Or will that be too expensive?

Also, what passes for ID over in the States? I'm 23 but probably dont look 21. Will I have to have my passport on me to get into bars, clubs and casinos? Or does an Australian drivers license do the trick?

I am going to the US in a few weeks also and rang optus re. the phone situation. You just need to unlock your phone and leave your sim card in Australia. Once you arrive in the US (even at the airport) by a pre paid sim card and you're set. The pre paid sim cards in the US are great value for money too.

License is fine, but I generally carry my passport with me.
They ID everyone that looks younger than 40.

License is fine in most places. I never wanted to carry my passport around too much. Usually kept it in the hotel in-room safe.

International roaming costs are exhorbitant. I'm talking 720mb which was my daughter's iphone allowance per month, costing something like $12k if she used it overseas.

I got a US sim card and number from a seller off ebay and activated it when I landed, and it did all my local calls for a few weeks. Cost about $30 for memory. My wife used phone cards for international calls, which you can buy almost anywhere but some of the are tricky and only work when calling from the state you buy them from. We bought one in New York the day before we left and could not use it when we moved on to Las Vegas. Come to think of it we couldn't use it at Niagara Falls either and we were but a matter of metres from New York State.

I think it is best to head out and pick up a sim card after you land. Thy seem to be dirt cheap and at least you know how much call time and data you are getting.

American Airlines. Was 7 bucks which is kind of a rip off but it was a 5 hour flight from Vegas to NY and I had nothing better to do.

I felt much safer walking down the Vegas strip at 2am by myself than walking down any street in Melbourne's CBD after dark

Completely agree. Mind you the strip is so populated at all times and so visible that it is lower risk. Head a few blocks out in different directions, it may be different. I never saw police in Vegas but it seems so well controlled, that they must have such a subtle presence to do the job.

It's just a massive theme park and nobody is unsafe at a theme park. ;)

There was a way for iphone on pre paid AT&T but that loophole seems to have been fixed up. So I went in to a T-Mobile store and signed up with them 50 bucks a month and I got a phone number and calls. Now if you want it primarily for the data you can only get Edge (2G) speeds because of the frequency with the phones or something like that, but I've found it works ok with maps and facebook/email. I really only wanted the data for the maps and so far it's worked a treat.

Flying with V Australia - does anyone know if you get live Australian TV on the flight?

Leaving on Boxing day, whist on my flight out of Melb, can I watch the channel 9 coverage of the cricket?

No, live tv isn't available on any flight out of Australia

Can anyone recommend a hotel in San Fransisco .
Been researching online then cross referencing with Trip Advisor but that can also be misleading depending on who likes a coffee maker in their room or how soft they like their pillows .
Was looking at wharf or union square , but am always up for experienced views .
Happy to pay up to $300 a night as SF can be quite expensive .

Hotel Union Square, on Powell Street, trolley stops out the front to Fishermans Wharf, 50m walk to Market Street, block from Union Square.
Was 10 years ago I was there, however looking on the website shows its been upgraded and still going
Within the $300 a night
Brilliant pizza place directly across the road
Had an absolutely stunningly attractive receptionist back then

Radisson firshermans wharf. You can walk right onto the main wharf area and has an ihop hotel downstairs!!

Cannot wait! Off to america in just under a month now! Part of my trip is 11 days in New York (this I am most excited about), but I would really love to go to Boston and Washington as well, I know I can do day trips to both, but does anyone think that this may take too much time away from new york and I should just go to one of those two locations?

Yeh they are fantastic.

Speaking of flights. Just a heads up if anyone is a student/under 25 and is looking to go to the U.S in their summer period of 2012, book through STA as they have student flights for just under $1500, flying Air New Zealand, for that peak period (Qantas and V are well over $2000 and most likely won't come down much)

I managed to get one of these flights, its only the one stop over in NZ as well, very lucky

Speaking of the US anyone here been north of the border? To Canadia? :)

I was in Van, and Toronto/ Montreal area

Apparently they tell me that Edmonton is the bizarre murder capital of North America, some guy got his head decapitated on a greyhound bus

I had a very pleasant trip on the overnight bus from Banff back to Vancouver, thank you very much :)

Looking for any recommendations on places to stay in New York.

Something half decent but dont want it to break the bank.
