One thing that while booking a trip which surprises me is that there are so many flights that you'd think would be an easy one, but require a connection instead to get from place to place.
It's more a airline thing. You will find direct flights to all major cities it just won't be with all major airlines.

My trip just gone had all direct flights but I wasn't trying to save every cent. On a previous trip money was tighter so saving on multiple flights was a option I took that meant flying with a connection.

Mexico City, worth it as part of a North America trip?
Was just reading a travel article that had Mexico City as one of the top 10 underrated cities. Would love to go myself one day.

The fact that every time I return from LA I crave real proper tacos that are hard to come by here only makes Mexico as a whole more enticing.

Strongly considering it, just waiting for the NHL schedule to release to make a final decision.

Cali mexican food is on another planet

Best tacos in LA?

Best tacos in LA?
Although I can't vouch they are the best because LA has thousands of taquerias.

Leo's taco truck the original spot at the corner of Le Brea and Venice are well known for there Al Pastor (spicy pork cooked on a vertical spit like kebab meat) tacos. I've been there a few times now and they only cost about US$1.50 each. I also recommend the Chorizo tacos. The women in front of me in the queue ordered 30 of them out of the 40 tacos she was ordering so I had to give them a go and I was impressed. They also have another 8 locations these days including one on Sunset Blvd.

The Grand Central Market downtown has Tacos Tumbras a Tomas that specialise in Carnitas (slow deep fried pork in lard) where you get all parts of the pig if you choose. Not many places actually make there Carnitas the traditional way like this. Most places just do pulled pork in liquid.

In LA you will find hundreds of places just as good specialising in different meats and styles. As a local told me if they specialise in a certain meat or style then that's what you best order.

In Vegas head to the north end of the strip opposite Resort's World and you will find 3 taco spots that are very good. 1 specialise in Bira Tacos while the other 2 do a array of meats with Al pastor being the most popular. The 2 latter spots always had queues coming out the doors from lunch until well after 11pm.

Has anyone here done DisneyWorld during the summer holidays?

Next year I'm looking at doing an around the world airfare based around an arctic cruise in early July. If we go East to west, we'd get to America right in the middle of their summer holidays. While if we go west to east (the plan tbh) I'd probably look at Orlando the week BEFORE the holidays start.

Just wondering what the crowds would be like for then?

I have been there before on a wednesday (Though, maybe slightly busier than normal as it was 2 days after Labor Day) and did manage to do 3 parks in 1 day. If I can do 2 here I'd probably do it. And do all 4 parks over 2 days. But if one can't manage that. I'd probably forgo it for another date, a quieter date.

What travel card is the best to use?

Obviously I'll be looking to take cash out for bars, tipping etc but will also use card where I get the chance.

Was just booking hotels on hotels.com and actually wondered what card I should be using for that too because the pay at property feature requires you to pay in USD.

I used a MasterCard Cash Passport last time but they're no good I hear.

just with hiring cars, everyone was using this site when I was in the states over Xmas

its like a airbnb for cars

I looked at this on my recent trip. The prices were a hell of lot cheaper than a standard rental place. Fancy sedans were way cheaper than a hatchback from a rental place.

My big issue was the insurance part was a bit confusing and I couldn't workout if it was included or if not what was the cost. The other issue is they are a bit further away from the airport and they don't offer pickup. You will still need to get a Uber or Taxi to pick the car up. I was only looking in LA so this might not be the case elsewhere.

The website doesn't let you pay in advance?

On booking.com if a hotel says pay at the property there usually is a pay now option in the email conformation.

Note sure if it's the same for USA as it is for Europe but the most recommended seem to be 'Up' and 'Wise' for a travel card.

ING was good but they are now putting a limit on how many ATM withdraws you can use a month before they charge fees, starting August.

Yeah, they allow paying it advance but have just been choosing pay at property for most bookings as I prefer doing that.

Best to keep an eye on USD value, if it goes up by the time you pay at the hotel then you obviously end up paying more then the price at the time of the booking.

Last time I was in Europe, I booked a hotel in the countries currency and by the time I went to pay at the hotel I paid $400 more because their currency had gone up against the AUD in the 3 months prior to booking the hotel.

True, thanks for that. If it fluctuates enough for me to worry about though I'd probably be canning the trip so it should be all good.

Mexico is worth its own trip, if you’re going to fly down there you need to see more than just MC. Awesome country to travel around.

I’ve just spent a week driving from
Orlando down the Florida keys to Key West (90 miles from Cuba) and then back up to Miami Beach yesterday. Pretty nice down there, but goddamn it’s hot/humid at the moment.

Anyone been to SF lately?

Fell in love with the city 3 years ago and want to go back but have heard it's kinda ****ed now, don't want to go back if its going to tarnish the memory
Was there back in December and it was my 5th time. I actually found the homeless problem they have to not be as bad particularly in the main tourist areas compared to my previous few times there.

So I can't say I found it had gone downhill from previous visits. Had a great time and nothing on this trip tarnished my view of the city. I will definitely be back next time I travel through the US.

It sounds like the Tenderloin area has got worse but the rest seems the same.

I'm off to New York next month with my sister. Have been once before although was only 10 years old. Any suggestions on what to check out from previous goers?

We've got tickets to:
- Yankees Game
- Chicago musical on Broadway
- Jazz Club
- Comedy Club
- Drake concert

Billy Joel is performing while we're there which would be super but I don't think there's any tickets left.

What else am I missing out on?

You can get Billy Joel tickets on the secondary market.

I'd suggest one of Top of the Rock or Empire State

I'll be doing the 9/11 Museum when I'm there and MSG tour.

The high line is great if you haven't done that.

Are you staying in Manhattan? If you have time definitely go for a walk over the bridge to Williamsburg, so pretty. Get a bite to eat at Westlight with an amazing view over the city.
