I think we got it right with our first COMPO pick, Billie Smedts looks every bit a potential 200 gamer with x-factor to boot.

As for the second, given we need to use it in the next couple of years the question is do we trade it this year or maybe hang on to it for either of the following two drafts.

The talk has been to use it to lure Josh Caddy as GC have a bit of a list squeeze and it would be worth more in their hands, but given our performance this year in the vfl and on the weekend, particularly our rookies, we have a bit of a list squeeze issue ourselves IMO.

We also can't discount the mini draft or making a left field play to improve picks in this so-called super draft.

It feels a bit like holding the joker after you've picked your cards up. Expect Wells to drag the chips his way.

Only Caddy is worth the Compo pick.. Stevens, Gysberts imo aren't...

If Caddy doesn't come to Geelong, use it in one of the drafts..

Agreed. If we can nab someone who looks as good a prospect as Smedts then go for it, otherwise more than happy for SW to take it to the draft.

Given the form of our rookies, and the fact that other clubs will be sniffing around, as much as the thought of Caddy arriving excites, I can't help but think that maybe we might be best served hanging on to our pick or using it in the mini- draft.

Upgrade walker stringer burbury. COMPO and Simpkin or gillies to GWS for a guaranteed gun? Love to be a fly on the wall in the list management meetings over the next few weeks..

It's an interesting debate.

My preference would be:
1. Caddy;
2. Trade it - This option really depends on how the trade period unfolds, but if GC or GWS have say a late first rounder and an early second rounder, or two early second rounders they aren't likely to use I reckon this is a great option. Would love to be able to grab say Macrae with our first pick and Menzel with our second. On second thoughts, maybe this should be my first preference... :-)
3. Mini-draft?? Not too sure on this option, really depends on how crazy the bidding becomes this year. If too expensive then probably just sit tight until 2013. What I don't want to see is our two potential first round picks used up on 1 player.

I discounted trading it for a top 10 pick this year as I just don't think it would happen.

MINI DRAFT!
I've been pushing the mini draft wheelbarrow hard and get shot down on most occasions.
I want a prodigy.
Yes Wells can pick the eyes out of draft pick 35+ ( or the club and culture can make something of someone . . . . sorry that's something else I get shot down for thinking).
But I want a GUN! A genuine you beaut future Superstar. Sure there's no sure thing but something would have to go wrong for it not to work.

I like this kind of crazy thinking :D

Anyone in particular you have in mind?

I wonder what competition there will be this year to get into the mini-draft? It will be interesting to see who offers what and whether, if we miss on Caddy, we have a go at it. Our compo pick itself won't be enough to secure a selection but if we tack it onto perhaps D.Simpson to GWS then that may be enough. I now wonder whether this is what is being looked at behind the scenes..

The next question then of course is? Who would you take?

I do recall reading somewhere that we were dead keen on Jack Martin, but that could have been BS. I'd be inclined to go with Hogan, has been likened to a young Jonathon Brown (where have I heard that before?) and although it is not exactly a great needs pick, he is arguably best available. Would be ecstatic with either though...

Compo, Gillies and Simpkin
Not Big Daws as we need him to be our next Premiership Monster Ruck.
Resent history suggests premierships are won with a good Monster in the ruck (hawthorn excluded).

GWS will have the same list squeeze next year that GS have this year so they too could do with a bankable compo pick.

Someone might be able to tell me, if we do jag a 17yo will they be able to play in our VFL side?
That would be so much better for a kids development than being shipped off to some affiliate VFL club or State League or even a random WAFL/SNFL side

As for who I'd want
Just the kid who can jump the highest, run the fastest, kick the furtherest, plays inside, plays outside, sticks his tackles, is great overhead, is great below his knees, composed in traffic, has great vision, finds space, . . . . . . .

I want the compo pick but I dont want Martin or Hogan I would love to get Kelly. The son of the kangaroos player who won a couple of sandover medals.

I would offer Dawson Simpson or Mitch Brown along with the compo pick.

Im not in love with "mini" this year. Last year was better imo, Omera, Crouch, Stringer... although Kelly has good wraps. Hogan and Martin will appeals to some Im sure.

I think we use it this year.
Obviously we cant directly use it in the draft , if we had nominated it at the start of the year it would be worth P16 right now. We haven't and that may work for us. It may be calculated that we will fall further next year with our insertion of even more youth , so for a precipitant club they may get it and activate it for the 2013 season. Odds are there will be less first round picks so even a finish similar to this year would see its value enhanced. But with our VFL side showing potential , they may rightly feel by 2014/2015 we will have bounced. I think its max value will be 2013.

So we should trade it for known value - Caddy ; or trade it for estimated value just like we did to get Smedts.

By the end of the trade period period I suspect GWS or GC should have an extra pick in the first round. If Wells likes what he sees I say get the extra pick. It allows us to get two players in the top 20 , perhaps allows us to risk Menzel and still get an Imid. Depending how early and who drops who knows who it may be. The TAC cup show's phantom had Jessie Lonergan first round which was earlier than Id hoped but if Wells gave the nod Id be happy with that.

The only rider on this is list space.Trade it & use it , trade it for a player. Its a spot that perhaps with the list squeeze on we may not want this year.

Nah, we already lost him to Gold Coast.

any chance you can edit the thread title?
I'm not reading a thread with capitals. It shits me.

In theory the mini draft works as it doesn't take up a list spot but in practice I don't see the right choice there for us-I think Martin is risky (particularly with his Dad) and Hogan as much as he will be super, KPF is not an area of need for us.

I think either we trade the compo for Caddy or we use it next year when it may well be top 10-these are our best options.

Thoughts on Kelly P_O?

Thoughts on Kelly P_O?

Has talent. Although I do think effectively taking him as a top 5 pick next year (thats the equiv of what the mini draft would cost) is a bit of a reach though.

i was surprised we didn't nominate to use it this year, being a high quality draft, which to me clearly indicates that the plan all along has been to use it in a trade. if we don't land caddy though then it looks like we've missed the boat

I think by not nominating we are keeping our options open. We can trade it to GC or GWS where the fact that it hasn't been activated should make it more attractive or use it ourselves when in all likelihood we will get better value out of it the longer we wait. We may well miss the first boat but there's another one just as good coming to pick us up if we do.

Might work that if we miss Caddy, and he goes to St K, for example for pick 12, we could look to trade that pick for the compo. Pick 12 and 15 in this draft would be a fantastic result. Same would go with Carlton and Pick 11. Both have been spoken about, and with GC list squeeze, the compo will allow them to get a pick of similar perceived value in the next few years. Caddy may not end up with us, but he may very well deliver us a player like Stringer, Wines, Menzel, Mayes etc, and very well a combination of two of these in a trade with GC.
