Or more generally torrents v p2p.

Used to use limewire a few years ago, and recently got it again, after noticing it now does torrents too (although apparently I still find them from isohunt or mininova, etc rather than directly), and get reasonable speed (>150K/s) with the ordinary downloads, but torrent files are only ever a couple of K/s at best).

I tried uTorrent, but got similar results, even for files where seeders>leechers by 5:1.

I've followed all the 'settings' to have ports forwarded, etc...yet uTorrent still registers them as needing forwarding.

I run a wireless router with 4 cabled connections, and the PC I'm downloading too is on a cabled connection.

Any ideas on what I can do?

on your router, set a static ip to a computer id/name
otherwise on your computer, make a static ip.

as for torrents vs p2p, its a no battle - torrents usually has 95% less viruses depending on where you get your torrents from.
anyone who cares about system security will tell you these three things

1. don't use p2p/torrent
2. don't use limewire/utorrent
3. don't use windows

i recommend getting linux, installing wine (takes 1 minute), then install utorrent, and run utorrent through wine.

Simon, don't go to Linux if you are anything less then "very" IT literate. It still has a way to go in the easy department.

Personally I would go the torrent line, as VB said, it does have much less change of virus' and dummy downloads.

I recommend uTorrent. Why?
Because if you goto the "about utorrent" tab in the help menu, and type "T", you get to play tetris, and tetris is good.

I usually use Utorrent to download big files such as movies, TV show episodes, programs and TV series (just finished downloading entire Transformers G1 collection) and then use frostwire to download songs as it is usually quicker to find. Before i stated using torrents, i was sick to death of downloading movies that werent what they say they were, like since when was smokin aces- the notebook? and getting those dodgy ones where it says to download a different media player. That doesn't happen as often on torrents because there are far more comments on every file so you will know if it is a fake or a virus.

Still have the same problem. Think it may be the individual torrents though, a question:

I've got better speeds (up to around 50-60K total, still very poor, but better than the 10-15K I was getting) on the torrents, yet they still think the ports aren't forwarded - I even tried opening myself RIGHT up (ie everything off and open), and still no speed (did get a nice boost on regular downloads to nearly 200K though.)

Do you download lots of different files (ie 10+ different torrents) at once, or one at a time? I only get 5-6K on individuals seemingly no matter what I do (will upload till it hits about 30k though), yet when I add more, they get 5-6K too (and upload at 30k).

I've tried throttling uploads and leaving on full (up to about 120k upload), but never seen a torrent download go over 16k, and usually under 10.

Pls help, as I couldn't stand to weight a month to download some files I could get normally overnight.
