2nds UWS GIANTS - NEAFL 2014

Shouldn't lose from that half time score. Oh well, hopefully it's lesson learned. Another large number of top up players I noticed. Swans would have had a few too no doubt. Doesn't help in the minor premiership race either. Silverware would be nice

Of course we were missing a few players who got us to the top of the ladder, like Whiley, O'Rourke & co.;)

The only thing less relevant than the Reserves Premiership is the Rising Star award :)

Match Report:
The UWS GIANTS will play Brisbane Lions at Spotless Stadium this Saturday to secure a place in the NEAFL preliminary final. The GIANTS had a chance to secure top-spot against Swans Reserves but fell agonisingly short, losing to their cross-town rivals by just one point at the SCG on Saturday. Zac Williams, Tim Golds and Dylan Addison pushed their claim for a senior recall with solid performances, while Liam Sumner lead the charge up forward with two goals. "It was a pretty tough match which could have gone either way in the dying stages," UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand said. "At the end of the day they got on top of us around stoppages and had some bigger bodies around the ball." Hand said he was impressed with Williams, who was dangerous around stoppages and limited the influence of Swans veteran Ryan O’Keefe. "Zac had a great defensive game but was also really creative running off his opponent," Hand said. "Some of our older players like Reid, Addison and Hunt showed their experience and led from the front all day." The UWS GIANTS are currently second on the NEAFL ladder, but will secure first place with a win on Saturday due to their strong percentage. If they lose they could slip to third. The UWS GIANTS play at 1pm before GIANTS take on Collingwood from 4.40pm at Spotless Stadium. Swans Reserves 11.12 (78) def. UWS GIANTS 11.11 (77) Best Players: T. Golds , J. Hunt , S. Gilham , L. Sumner , Z. Williams , D. Addison Goals: L. Sumner 2, S. Reid 2, D. Addison 2, J. Hunt 2, J. Giles , L. Griffiths , J. UWS finish on top of the table!
Withstood a great Lions last quarter after they just couldn't hit the scoreboard. Decent play by both sides given the conditions. Don't know that anyone really screamed for senior selection - Hampton looked great with the ball in his hands but didn't see to get it much. Giles looked like Giles. Sumner had some spark. The rest weren't that memorable.

2014 NEAFL Grand Final:

The UWS GIANTS will compete in their first NEAFL preliminary final after securing the minor premiership with a 15-point win over Brisbane Lions. The GIANTS now automatically progress through to the second round of finals and will clash with the winner of Queensland-based sides Aspley and Redland in a fortnight for a chance to play in the Grand Final. UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand said his side’s top-place finish was good reward for a consistent season of football. "It’s exciting times for the boys and it will be a new challenge for us in the preliminary final facing one of the Queensland teams on the other side of the draw," Hand said. "A week’s rest will do the boys a world of good but we still have to take our game to another level if we want to earn a spot in the Grand Final." Twenty-one GIANTS listed players are eligible to be selected for finals including; Jed Lamb, Jono O’Rourke, Stephen Gilham, Liam Sumner, Sam Schulz, Matt Buntine, Zac Williams, Kristian Jaksch, James Stewart, Andrew Phillips, Nathan Wilson, Jon Giles, Jacob Townsend, Mark Whiley, Cam McCarthy, Tim Golds, Dylan Addison, Tom Boyd, Rory Lobb, Jake Barrett and Tom Downie. According to NEAFL rules, UWS GIANTS will be allowed to field up to 15 listed players, with the remaining spots to be filled by top-up selections. To qualify for finals players must chalk up at least three NEAFL games, or nine NEAFL games if they have made five or more appearances in the AFL. Two UWS GIANTS players, Mark Whiley and Matt Buntine, were last night named in the NEAFL NSW ACT Team of the Year. “Mark Whiley has been really consistent throughout the season and has worked hard on his game to improve his running capacity and disposal efficiency,” Hand said. “It’s a similar story with Matt Buntine who proved he can sustain a high level of performance in both the reserves and AFL side.” The UWS GIANTS have a week off before playing the winner of Aspley and Redland. The date and location of that match is still to be confirmed. UWS GIANTS 17.11 (113) def Brisbane Lions 14.14 (98) Best Players: S. Reid , D. Addison , J. Giles , L. Sumner , Z. Williams , C. Hampton Goal Kickers: S. Reid 4, D. Addison 3, J. Giles 2, A. Phillips 2, C. Hampton 2, R. Lobb , J. Lamb , D. Spinks , L. Seems a bit unfair that we will be leaving out fit and available eligible players - so who misses? Six to cut. Has it been that way all year? What little NEAFL I have seen didn't involve that many top ups (except for a couple of bad injury weeks).

Lamb is the only season ended. O'Rourke is listed as three weeks which might mean the grand final if there's a spot. Whiley at a week will miss only the bye (and the Dogs game). Golds Townsend and Jaksch are listed as test this week so should be available next.

So Lamb and O'Rourke - 4 more to be "Omitted" from the NEAFL.

Who, that has played all or mostly all year to get them where they are in that competition, do you leave out and let miss out on having their names etched in the record books if the team goes on to win. Their place forcibly taken by a kid from a local club side.

Is it senior listed or any listed players? Schulz can only play NEAFL, is it 15 + Schulz? What top ups are we looking at using. Will Finlayson get a run. Liked the work of Tom Faul when I saw him - I'm hoping that they get to meet whoever they are using a little before the morning of the game (though that strategy has worked in the past too). Oh and Sam Reid (c) is a handy in.

I know it's only NEAFL - but it's finals and it's at home because we've earned it. I'm looking forward to it. The main footy will be over, but one of our teams is still playing in September - and playing some pretty good footy. Will it be a Spotless or BISP? Either way, should be a good game and worth the effort to go out and watch.

I believe you had no restrictions during the regular season (vs Swans' restriction of 18 in squad and 15 on the field), but for finals you're the same as the Swans. It's been relaxed a little as it used to be 12 listed players in the squad for the finals only 2 years ago.

Listed players refers to either senior or rookie listed so Schulz would be counted in that group. Sam Reid wouldn't though so there's a little advantage to you guys.

The danger for your team is adjusting to that restriction plus playing Aspley/Redland which you've never done before. They'll be much tougher than the Eastern NEAFL sides.

And I believe it will almost certainly be Blacktown that will host. Would love to watch this game but I suspect Swans (seniors) finals game will also be on the Saturday.

There's all good in some of the top ups, they still play the team thing as educated through the academy's and can be a refreshing mix to the finals series and not be focused on being I in team, they look up to there peers and do as there told and not try the individual risks which many tried earlier. Some of the top ups have played 5-7 games this yr for the UWS but also played for there own clubs ,the rams in the tac and the nationals and there school comp so I think these kids have nothing more to prove but shown diligence in what they strive for and good luck to them. Good luck UWS
