News out of the umps is that young goalie Kofoed is out for a number of weeks due to a damaged knee. Matt Kent is heading up to A grade.

Rep weekend this week sees the following goalies go up:

U/19 North v South: Paul Gatt and Andrew Esposito
VAFA v SFL: Chris Doyle

Amongst other appointments, umpire Firley heads to Perth for the WAAFL v VAFA match and umpire Sutcliffe has the VAFA v SFL match.

How does a goal umpire damage his knee??

Also, Firley was ordinary in the StKevin's v Collegians game on the weekend.
He missed several obvious free kicks and paid too many soft ones.
Don't they pick umpires for rep games based on form?

You would think all umpires appointed would be appointed on form.

Is this the case Pazza? Obviously the OC does not think so.

Maybe you should run through the appointments to explain why at a local level (as opposed to VFL or AFL rep matchs) the umpires have been appointed.

Reputation? Form?

Who knows?

The AFL is a mixture of both I would think so.

I would like to qualify what I said re: Firley. I have seen him umpire plenty of times, and generally he is quite good, but Saturday's performance was sub-standard.

Scribe, how well do you know Andrew Ramsden??

The OC,

Well we:

Were in the same year at school.
Played school doubles tennis together (our salad days).
Started at OTs together in 1992, and are both still playing.
Played over 200+ games each for OTs (not together very often!!)
Been on footy trips together. Drank post-match happy and angry beers together.

Never been intimate though, and I've never fought for his honour but I guess I know him reasonably well.

;)

Cheers

Thank you for your life story scribe. Rambo is a character whose extra curricular activities may never be matched by a mere mortal.

I do agree to some extent with Nuffy O'Dwyer that Brent "Big Cat" Walsh is not the force he once was. I do believe he has struggled emotionally since the heckling he recieved from certain ferals during the Collegians game a few weeks back.

It's been coming from the start of the season, so 7-8 weeks of form would be a fair guide.

Getting a Rep game at any level is a huge honour. Having done one myself in 2001, you cannot actually hide the smile from your face.

Well done on your rep game the other year. Fair effort.

These questions are also directed to Nuffy.....

Do you think all VAFA grounds should adopt the AFL policy of larger goal posts??

And what can be done about the epidemic of knee injuries sweeping goal umpiring circles???

I heard a rumour that a family trio, similar to the Cloke brothers in bad haircuts and poor football skills, is moving from OEG to Old Trinity, comprising of Mark, Sam and Kane Dawson, to play alongst other relatives there? Any truth? I always thought Mark Dawson had some untapped 1980's football potential left in him.

I think the Dawson trio may struggle for a transfer considering their recent tribunal record. Young Sam must be seething from his report on the weekend. Big Cat Walsh may need the inspiration to bring him back to the form that many an A Grade backman has nightmares about.

What was it after the Awesome Foursome? Anyway, a horrible speech from the Big Cat nonetheless.

Amoungst other VAFA stories, The Big Pineapple confesses his respect for Pink Marshmellows....

As another goal umpire in the VAFA I would say

No, why bother? I actually prefer the different posts at different grounds, make the job harder and creates the different feel between all grounds

Less training :D

Incorrect... I only ever have white marshmellows with my hot chocolate.

I'm assuming you are talking about my Sunday morning coffees with VAFA CEO Michael Sholley and B Grade scribe Tom Brain?

While I am bitterly disappointed to miss out on a representative appointment, it will give me an opportunity to get away for the weekend and visit the parents in Moe. Probably best to rest my niggling calf injury anyway! :(

With no games this weekend, God has allowed all players par-ty down!

You're so wise. You're like a miniature Buddha, covered with hair.

The weekend will see more Sausage at night clubs than the Don Smallgoods factory.

I'll be hitting The Marquee night club this Saturday, so feel free to drop in a for a couple of cheeky ones. Most of the VAFA umpires will be letting their hair down there so it would be good to have a beer with a few VAFA players and help rebuild the player/umpire relationship which has been strained in recent weeks.

Thats a massive taxi back to Moe from Marquee...

Thanks for the invite Nuffy, but me and the StBede's boys will be doing the short trip down the Nepean Hwy to the 21st Century in Frankston, I would offer you a lift but my rusted out ute got the yellow canary from the cops so I may have to take a taxi. Plenty of Jim Beam cans tho. :D

I wanna say something. I'm gonna put it out there; if you like it, you can take it, if you don't, send it right back. I want to be on you.

Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. I... I wanna be on you.

If you wanna get intimate, myself and the rest of the boys from Glenhuntly Oval will be watching the fillies at Caulfield this weekend.

We might even put a few big pineapples we "collected" on some of the races!!!

Back on to footy news.

I noticed that Flaherty kicked a bag for Old Essendon this week. I have a few mates that played at Coburg with him and thought he had a big head then. From my knowledge he left a couple of years ago but i havent heard of him doing any damage in the ensuing seasons since. Is it possible that someone may have been pumping his tyres and lead him to believe he is better than he really is?

I know there are a few Old Essendon boys on here so hopefully someone can shed some light.

Also, the weekends set back won't diminish the anticipation for the Old Carey v Fitzroy grand final preview that is on the horizon

Whammy!

Thats hard hitting Scott. I know Flaherty has a look at this forum sometimes and it will be interesting to see his response
