Sounds like you need to get off the grog Nuffy, it could effect your decision making this weekend.

I never drink in the 48 hours leading up to a game and I don't drink for 48 hours after a game to ensure that I maximise my recovery.

I am in doubt for this weekend after a "cattle" incident on the farm in Moe aggrivated my niggling calf injury.

What a massive weekend! The Marquee on Saturday night was huge with all the Under 19 Rep and the VAFA C-D4 Rep boys celebrating two good wins at the Wick on Saturday afternoon. I backed up on Sunday at the Moe Tavern which was absolute mayhem. Not looking forward to training tonight.

What did everyone else get up to on their footy free weekend?

Bush Inn Saturday watching the Hawks play worse than the St Bede's Mentone 2nds against St Kilda. Golf Sunday followed by a 15k run (silly really, only means I'm sore for tonight's training). Rested yesterday.

Frankly Nuffy, I'm perplexed - what possible training could goal umpires do for which execessive boozing could prove detrimental? Do you do 100 x 30m shuttle runs between the posts at HQ? Roll the arms over 50 times each to warm up? Roll the neck back a few dozen times and look at the stars pretending a Sherrin has just flown through overhead?

If anything, I'd have thought raising the right arm to the mouth with ale in hand would assist with dexterity of one's point registering limb. Switch to the opposite hand (e.g. as part of a drinking game) and you're balancing it up for goal signalling purposes.

In fact, pretty much everything you do when ********ed can be argued as practice for goal-umpiring. Staggering around looking up in the air. Jumping out of harms way to avoid an errant glass/patron is akin to avoiding the ball as it bounces through. PUnching yoursself in the breast pocket as a show of drunken defiance = signalling to the fieldie that you have your decision made.

Think about it, and then you've got your excuse for Benny Goodman in case he reckons you've overdone it in Moe (calf incident excluded)

;)

JT, after seeing a couple of the Backstreet Boys promoting their reunion on Rove last night, I wondered what the state of *N Sync was? Obviously you're too busy with a white-hot solo career and BigFooty duties, but have the others considered getting back together?

Look, the anwer is i just don't know. Joey's solo career is taking off in Dubbo and Tamworth, JC and Chris has been approached to play footy up at Launching Place next year. Lance is lukewarm on the idea of a reunion and wants to finish his Graphic Design degree at Swinburne. There is possibly another Christmas album in the works though.

For the latest though, I also post on this website:

1. Weak effort by Fitzroy Reds U19 to win a flag then refuse to go up a section becasue they had lost some players. This happens to all under age teams - deal with it and do your time at the low/middle end of the table in a higher section

2. Play your best players in the seniors. Obviously I don't know the ins and outs of Fitzroy Reds but how did Magamhez not crack it for a senior game last year?

You would be suprised how hard us goalies train on a Tuesday & Thursday night. We do a lot of fitness work designed to increase our speed and agility over 15-20 meteres. Therefore we do a lot of shuttle runs and beep tests. My PB for the beep test is level 6.8 but I'm aiming for level 7 by the end of the season. We also watch a lot of video's of controversial goal umpire decisions from AFL, TAC Cup, SAFL, WAFL and VFL in order to improve our decision making ability. Ofcourse there are blokes who train harder than others. These blokes are usually the blokes with ambitions to make TAC Cup, VFL or AFL level. I have applied for a position in the TAC Cup and VFL for season 2006 so keep your fingers crossed. :D

Any results from this weekends practice game?? I was lucky enough to witness a very high skilled intra club game b/n OEG. I must admit OEG look the real deal in 2005.

Wasn't this an intelligent post? Since then Old Essendon have been beaten by Caulfield (3rd Last), North Old Boys (2nd Last) and they narrowly defeated St Bedes (stone motherless last) by 9 points. They certainly look the real deal Topgun!

I figured there'd be some short, sharp agility work involved.

We've had the umps train with us (Old Trinity) in both the past two seasons, and we have incorporated boundary thrown-in, ball bouncing/running to edge of square, shuttle running and backwards running drills into the session, with running and football skills interspersed. All good stuff.

Shouldn't be too difficult to get the beep test PB above 7 I'd think. Best of luck with the 2006 aspirations!

Ok, thanks for making your choice. I dunno, I have never seen an U19s match.

Actually I'm sure I saw him play seniors in 2004 v Prahran at Ramsden St (as BSO was out of action, then, too). Maybe it was in the 2nds that I saw him, so I'll stand corrected if need be, but I'm pretty sure I only turned up in time for the seniors.

OK ladies,

Time to get serious here and stick your neck out for your respective sides.

Trinity meet Xavs at HQ tomorrow and frankly, we're praying for standard EP weather. Actually, its not quite that bad as we match up well and have beaten them in 3 of the past 4 games. Still, we know their side's is back to pre-2004 quality, so little can be made of that.

Jono Horn has backed us, which might as well be the Kiss of Death, but expect a very disciplined and tight game from the Hedgeburners tomorrow. We reckon it'll be a close thing either way.

How about the rest - Mobbs? Jono? Caulfield & OEss boys? Who've you got and how are you looking for tomorrow?

Pack the long sleever!

Cheers

Didn't pass the fitness test last night so I'll be sitting out this weekends round of matches. I'll be heading out to HQ to watch Scribe and the boys take on the league leaders in what looks to be a one sided affair. Surprisingly, I am going with Jonathorn Horn and tipping an upset at EP in what will be a scrappy and ugly mud wrestle. HQ has not taken too kindly to recent rain and conditions will be horrible. Match of the round sees Old Haileybury at home, who will get over the line against the Eagles in a thriller. The boys from the Snake pit will easily account for the boys from Junction Oval while those cheeky boys from the OC Ryan & Seth find themselves in more hotwater when they host Uni Blues. In the final A grade match, the Cardinals face cross freeway rivals St Kevins and will be far too strong.

In B Grade action this week, match of the round at Waverly Park sees 1 V 2, Old Brighton V De La Salle. In a clash that many are calling the grand final preview I think that De La Salle will be too strong on their home turf. Out at Keilor Hill, OE host Mazenod. History shows that OE do not back up after big wins so I'm tipping Mazenod in an upset. St Bedes will continue on thier way to C Grade with a loss at home at the hands of Whitefriars while MHSOB will keep in touch with the top 4 with a gutsy away win at Caulfield. Not even Minton Connell will stop the always strong Ivanhoe at the Gillon.

This weekends matches look like absolute blockbusters and could make or break the season for many sides. Good luck to all teams and may the best team win. :p

Seth and Ryan predict a massive upset at the Trott this week. Collegians list is getting stronger by the week with several returning from long term injuries.

Uni Blues will be sidetracked by either exams or holidays, anything is possible.

Marissa and Summer both agree that it will be too cold to watch on Saturday and will spend the day in Chapel St shopping.

Zac is too busy with the comic book and I will be busy starring in Julie Cooper's next video......

Meanwhile, Kaleb is re-auditioning for Neighbours as Blair's replacement.

Sandy is also busy busting drug dealers with Trey.

Goodluck to everyone on the weekend. Stay warm and god bless.

I would have thought Collegians list was at its strongest immediately after round 1, when a newly acquired CHF with a massive beak went down. No more pandering to the needs of a whiny wanna-be surfer and more time for the other players to concentrate on their own games instead of someone else's gooch

The question baffling VAFA circles is how Old Essendon's Jordan "the Duck" Lloyd got so massive over the summer, surely the use of steroids is not out of the question. Perhaps it's a disease he caught one night in a good friends spa....? Jordan needs to take some time away from the gym I think.

he is quite a physical specimen isn't he OC?
I dont know about any disease he might have caught in a spa. But he was battling DVBT for a while a perhaps once that was under control he has been able to get a lot fitter

Bring back Topgun18, he is good for insightful, unbiased views about all things amateur football. He is the real deal in 2005.

Top of the table to you all.

Old Carey host Fitzroy Reds up near Bulleen today. I was going to say it was 1st v 2nd but apparently its 1st v 3rd, as Ormond have snuck above Old Carey of recent. Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure its the best two clubs at the moment in D1. Reds gave Ormond a bath when they played them and I dunno what Old Carey did, but they probably did the same.

Reds often have bad results at thes grounds, losing by a kick on more than one occasion recent years. But this time, I think, the Roys will sneak home.

Its not going to be much of a barometer though as there's still half a season to go and both clubs are coasting. If one club hides the other, maybe you could read something into it.

Carey 10.14.74.
Reds 11.14.80.

De La v Old Brighton was an awesome match. Very even all day until a free kick for dropping the ball was correctly paid at half-forward for De La, halfway through the last quarter, with the home side 19 points down.

They then kicked the last 7 goals of the game, in the space of 13 minutes.

Trinity had no answer to Damian Lynch who bagged 9 large ones as the Boys Next Door held their spot at the top of the table. The first 5 goals went to the Xavs in the blink of an eye before Trinity steadied somewhat, but trailed by 41 points at the first break.

The mainsail and spinnaker were hoisted in the second and, if not for an undisciplined free kick which gave Timmy Ockleshaw a goal, the T's would've led at the main change. After half time, Xavs did enough in the 3rd to lead by 34 points, and played good defensive footy, finding Lynch for another 3 on the rebound, to hold us out. Final quarter squared, but it was a good quality, hard-running game of open ammo footy.

Good efforts I see from Collegians and especially OMs (another visiting team wins at the Pit). The Bloods belted the Eagles, and we hope they suffer post-traumatic-stress this week when they jump the fence to play on the big oval.

Reckon the bottom four would seriously have Bernies in their sights now.......

Collegians played awesome footy in the first half and for most of the 3rd quarter. A lead of over 40 points at one stage against the reigning premiers. Lowcock and Liam Ryan flicked the switch around the stoppages and ignited the Blues who over ran a helpless Collegians outfit, very disappointing.

Snake Pit seems to hold no demons anymore. SKOB's look to be battling.

Can anyone confirm the rumour that David Bourke (son of Frances) has pulled on the boots for Old Essendon?

How is Seth Dixon going at Collegians? Has he recovered from his bruised ego yet?

How was his ego bruised.

The only bruised ego at the Trott on Saturday was that of Blues FF George DeCespiny, some of the greatest heckling ever witnessed at a VAFA game.
