VAFA General Discussion

I very much doubt the season will continue for at least another couple of weeks.
Which essentially means the Thirds competitions get 3 games in 10 weeks before playing finals. Good luck not getting injured everyone!

FWIW one up one down is the only logical promotion/relegation method for this season. The draw is now too compromised with possibly 4-5 games being missed across the grades. With Parkdale not coming back it will make it smoother to come out now and announce it. Biggest losers are obviously the losing grand finalists.

100% agree that the possibility of injuries will most likely increase with that sort of lead in - and that's not great at all. That said, I think those playing would be grateful of getting the opportunity just to play and finish off a season.

At this stage we could be another couple of weeks away from H&A games being available to other divisions and that will mean all sorts of things for clubs just in/out of finals contention and relegation. Not ideal, but it is what it is and I just hope at the end of this season we can have teams win premierships and avoid/not avoid relegation because they got to play again this year in some capacity rather than some concocted system that has about as much merit as the Duckworth-Lewis system.

Cheers, Chump.

P.S. Speaking of ducks .... a good one to miss tonight ;-)

I honestly don't see it happening. I reckon they'll try to maintain 10 per comp.

I wonder if AFL Victoria on behalf of their respective state affiliates (ie VAFA) might consider asking Cricket Victoria to delay the start of their season to give the football comps across Victoria more time to complete their seasons due to the lockdowns we're seeing at the moment.

That would make sense to me, who knows what the execs are doing

Nup.

AFL Victoria simply wouldn’t bother IMHO.

And it's bullshit , everyone should pull away from them
Mr Bed, or is Mr Ford? Either way, all funding goes through AFL Victoria and it would be financial suicide for the VAFA to turn it’s back on said organisation.

In fact, the VAFA were less than impressed with the points being forced upon them several years ago but had to accept them or lose their entire funding.

In hindsight, the points may save this great competition from the despicable club playing at the Uni oval not named Blacks.

How ironic.

Wonder if they’ll consider letting the thirds play the missed games? It’d still finish before senior finals finish.
If they play all four missed it would finish same time as the D1-4 finals

One up one down, or possibly no forced change are the only logical options. It is too tough with such an affected draw to send two down IMO. You look at a couple of grades where as many as 5-6 could still be relegated and missing games against the top couple would be a huge advantage and form an unrealistic and unfair relegation/promotion system. Whilst we may win one game back with a shortened finals series It will still be an uneven draw.
One option might be to take enforced relegation/promotion off the table and ask the bottom two clubs only for submissions if they feel they need to be relegated and make case by case decisions. Eg if in B Parkdale stay, however they choose to be relegated, and make a justified case for this then the top side in C that wishes to be promoted is duly promoted. On the other hand Old Mentonians finish second bottom in C because they play the top four twice and miss games against fellow relegation candidates so decline the option of relegation and stay.
A third option would be a second top v second bottom or top v bottom EPL like playoff but I'm not sure how they would find time for this considering cricket season

All this talk, some good suggestions, some not so good. But I can tell you what will happen, The VAFA will do absolutely sweet F**k all and nothing will change in terms of playing extra games, delaying finals etc
Lets just hope local footy can play next week and lets move on

Northern Football League appear to have decided to abolish relegation but keep promotion, creating an uneven comp in 2022 and then correcting it for 2023 with 2 teams relegated (their normal scenario is 1 up/1 down)

Parkdale leaving the VAFA would throw a massive spanner into the works

I believe a questionnaire went out to the clubs discussing amongst other things 1 up 1 down or no relegation. Also discussed was a two week finals series 1v4 2v3 then a GF. This was before the latest lockdown. I expect some change

Great idea in a smaller comp with uneven grades already like the NFNL however this would create byes in nearly every grade for us so I can't see the VAFA doing this
