VAFA General Discussion

So it doesn't stop him from winning the medal ?

I spoke to a VAFA umpire over the weekend. A player that has been found guilty of an offence (in this case striking) is ineligible to win the competition Best & Fairest.

Considering we have heard nothing from HQ and the formalities of the season being completed, I doubt it will get any airtime other than what has been posted on these boards.

Just another 'chink in the armour' of what was a previously highly regarded and well run administration.

There's a few others I can think of (other than those posted above).
Mt Lilydale (EFNL) - now North Croydon / MLOC
St Francis Xavier (SFNL) - now Narre South
Southern Dragons (SFNL) - not clear on this. Think they started in SFNL, came to VAFA, went back to SFNL then died.

But your point is right - they are still near the level they were in the VAFA (near the bottom). Other than the Dragons, obviously.

Think there may be something to this.

A number of clubs seem to have downplayed their school connections:
Mt Lilydale OC - now North Croydon / MLOC.

Others have divorced their old schools altogether:
St Leo's Emmaus Wattle Park (VAFA) - now just Wattle Park. I think one of these schools ceased to exist years ago.
St Francis Xavier (now SFNL) - Narre South Saints.
North Old Boys - now just call themselves Brunswick (unclear whether name change or outright separation).

Some have merged to survive:
Salesian (with St Mary's) - VAFA.
Yarra Valley OB (with Manningham Cobras) - VAFA - though Yarra seems to be the dominant partner.

And others have just died:
Old Mentonians
Old Westbourne

Don't know how much old school character / influence school sides now in other comps retain - Rupertswood (EDFL), Eltham Collegians (NFNL) and Old Paradians (NFNL).
I'm surprised Wattle Park kept the St Leo's moniker as long as they did. That school had closed before I started high school, in 1996! Pretty sure it had been defunct for quite a while before that.

NOBSPC were basically forced into changing their name by the local council. They changed their criteria for ground use which specified the clubs had to have a link (and associated name) with the local community. The club had links with St Pat's in Ballarat in the late 2000s (including playing one game a year up at the school). I'm not sure whether the link is still there or not. The original school which was around when the club was formed is long gone.

Their school folded when I was in year 10 I believe, my dad went there

St Joeys officially closed 2010, although I think the original North Melbourne campus closed several years before that. A very small school that always punched well above its weight in both school sport and as NOBs. Had some good school and VAFA teams in the 70s and 80s. A rapidly changing demographic in its catchment led to its demise.

Congratulations to Marcus Stavrou on his second Woodrow as runaway winner. Champion player and person. OXWAFL very lucky to have him.

Well done to Xavs on successfully challenging his suspension earlier in the year.

Agree with your sentiments, a worthy person and a worthy winner.

Still way too much emphasis on Prem A.

Should had a chat to 3 times Comp B&F winner (CBB all in a row) Billy Murphy. Only been done once before.

Moot point
Apparently you can still win comp B & F if suspended.

Deserved winner and could have won by an even bigger margin if not for injury

I attended Grade 4 at St Josephs in North Melbourne and Grade 5 at Pasco Vale South.
Pasco Vale was too far for a 9-year-old Willy boy, so my parents gave me a Jesuit education from G6 at St Pat's East Melb.
North was good, PVSouth was good and the Jesuits were good too.
AND, the three schools have now evaporated.
AND, it wasn't my fault!

It will be interesting to see how the VAFA will respond to the shock loss to WA at this year's representative match at Elsternwick Park next season, even more so when you consider this was the Centenary Year for the Big V and everyone thought a Victorian win over WA was a mere formality.

Taken awhile to deliver that post

Unfortunately, nobody really cares.

How to make VAFA Premier Grand Final Day better:

  1. Public toilets to be more accessible to people around the ground, not just at the back of the grandstand;
  2. Publicise the grand final a lot better than normal. Hold a pre-match press conference in the week leading up to the grand final at Elsternwick Park where the coaches and captains talk about their teams chances;
  3. Print a one-off edition of 'The Amateur Footballer' specifically for the grand final;
  4. Negotiate with either a) Fox Footy or b) Channel 31 to show the game live into Melbourne, not just behind a paywall with Kommunity TV using the live footage and commentary from VAFA TV;
  5. Install another scoreboard at the Elsternwick Hotel end of Elsternwick Park to be used as a back-up to the main scoreboard in case it goes on the blink during a crucial stage of the game.

Good points.
Far easier to play it the previous Saturday

Better to have it on the public holiday Grand Final Eve Friday, especially for those who have just come back from seeing the AFL Grand Final Parade in the city and wants to watch some footy before the main event 24 hours later. Also a live telecast of the VAFA Premier Grand Final should be looked at as well. Maybe give the rights to Channel 31 who can carry the VAFATV/SEN Fan/KTV commentary and pictures. If the grand final was beamed live into Melbourne and surrounding suburbs on Channel 31, it will deliver for the VAFA a whole new audience to tap into.

Public Holiday should equate to Public holiday penalty rates.
Places the game in the middle of school holidays so people can’t plan holidays except for cellar dwellers. Introduces six day break etc etc
