Absolutely gutting news to hear, footy is so secondary to this type of stuff.

Hard to process/express on a footy forum but just wanted to get this out there: am currently doing my psych masters while working in disability care and 100% believe in these results:

In contrast to older data from the 70-80s, current studies indicate that committing to and following through on literally any type of therapy promotes the best outcomes for mental health.

In other words, the act of seeking and committing to therapy is statistically so much more influential than the type of therapy it actually is. The caveat being: it's got to feel right for you.

Seeing a psychologist, seeing a community counsellor, group therapy, couples therapy, hypnotherapy, mates counselling programs, anything. It's not that the data invalidates one type of therapy over another, it's that if it feels right for you, the act of committing to it is going to give you the best results possible.

Sounds counterintuitive as a prospective psychologist but honestly, for men especially I would encourage everyone to open themselves up to whatever type of help they need. If you're hesitating or unsure, the act of just committing to seeking help is the biggest step of all.

If anyone does want anything specific or any ideas for directions please feel free to pm. Love to all you footy nuffies out there.
So true. I’ve had in and off depression for years and last year losing dad and falling out with work and leaving a good job stuck me in a hole. I didn’t wait like I have in the past, sought help and although I only had a few sessions it’s like a weight lifts off you.

They reframe you and get you to go back to basics and do the little things that make you happy in life that you just stop doing because you are stuck in your head.

What really gets to me and of course it's an opinion,

Is that the the 'lure' of a twin was greater than the wife and children.

Even if I'm way of base here, I just can't wrap my mind around today.
I don’t think it is the lure of a twin. Just that he couldn’t see a way where his life would ever be the same and that can be unbearable.
When you are that low, you have a distorted view of your worth to others and think they will be fine, or even better off without you.

Just devastating. Had a bit to do with him when he was at the royals as part of the alignment and he was a class act. Always had time for everyone at the club.

The story from 1:01:30 is a classic

I’ve been a footy/Eagles fan for over 20 years and as some know I’m not one to be huge fan of the role player types but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. Towards the back end of his career the writing was on the wall but when he retired at 29 I was as upset as when a few of the high profile player that retired that year and the following season.

The news yesterday wrecked me and He was another great young man taken away from us way before his time. Really think of his Missus, kid, mum and most importantly scooter and Joel.

💙💛

Deepest sympathy from someone whose club had nothing to do with Adam, Troy, Joel or Scott.
Heartbreaking to hear and try to comprehend why.
Good luck to you guys with this horrific news particularly after the Adam Hunter passing also.
True Feels. Peace.

Sorry to hear mate, but also awesome to hear the sessions are going well for you. Have definitely been there where I've just waited and expected everything to go away by itself. Amazing how much a bit of reframing, and even the symbolic step of going in to deal with mental health directly, can do.

If the AFL don't support a mental health week, us and Brisbane should do it on our own. A Selwood Cup feels gross but a medal not necessarily for BOG but for the player that best exemplifies the way the twins went about it would be fitting I feel. For example (even though he was probably BOG too), Liam Baker would have won it on the weekend.

Best Clubman already taken, but I'd love for us to name a club medal in Selwood's honour too. Off the top of my head I can't think of the medals we have, but something like the player that best exemplifies what we want in a player. Teamwork, sacrifice, the one percenters etc. Again, Liam Baker probably the runaway leader if such an award exists.

One for the AFLW team, he did help set them up after all.

As an aside, if you didn't know my dad was a stereotypical retired boomer just by looking at him, hearing him talk about the Selwood twins would ram it home 🤦‍♂️ I get where he's coming from in terms of the family left behind, but still, no understanding of the effect mental illness has on thought processes etc.
