Dave Boyd, a verified 'Legend of the Port Adelaide Football Club' has passed away in his 90th year.

Condolences to Sandy, Chris, Paris, Kristian and the rest of the family.

Foster described Dave Boyd as the 'perfect footballer'. He won the Magarey Medal in 1956 and played in seven Premierships including our six in a row. His sons, Greg and Russell also represented Port Adelaide with distinction. After an illustrious playing career Dave Boyd served as an Official in the PAFC for many years.

I remember that night at Alberton when Davey stood to argue against the tide over our proposed move to the AFL. Davey was the PAFC delegate to the SANFL and opposed the move. I did not agree with his stance but I admired his courage in facing the meeting with a minority point of view. Those who were there will know what I mean.

As a kid I remember that Mobil Service Station at Alberton that became Dave Boyd Motors with a VW franchise. As a businessman Davey started small and moved up.

It will be a sad week at the Old Noarlunga and the Seaton.

RIP Dave. I knew Russell from his time at SN and he had a lot of good words to say about his father.

A tue Port Adelaide legend and sadly caught in a difficult position as Port's representative to the sanfl in the initial AFL bid.

A wonderful player as summed up by John Devaney in his Australian Football site.

https://australianfootball.com/players/player/Davey+Boyd/189

Tireless, beautifully balanced, and a superb stab pass, Boyd went on to play 222 SANFL games for Port in thirteen seasons and was never once dropped. He was also a near automatic choice for South Australia for much of his career, playing at the 1950 Brisbane, 1953 Adelaide and 1956 Perth carnivals. One of his greatest displays came against the VFL in Perth when he lowered the colours of champion Footscray centreman Peter Box; later that year, Boyd and Box would win their respective competition best and fairest awards.

A member of seven Magpie premiership teams, Boyd was often cited as a primary reason for the team’s dominance, and yet somewhat surprisingly never won a club best and fairest award. Part of the reason for this may have been his tendency to reserve his finest performances for big games - he was almost invariably among the best players afield in grand finals, for instance - but his Magarey Medal win in 1956 suggests that he was also perfectly capable of playing well consistently.

In 2000, Davey Boyd was selected on a half forward flank in Port Adelaide’s official ‘Greatest Team 1870-2000’. His sons Greg and Russell later maintained the family tradition by playing premiership football for the Magpies.

RIP Davey, a Port Adelaide legend.

I used to enjoy watching Russell Boyd played, he had some real x-factor. Sadly his career was limited due to injury.

Did Greg Boyd play in any of the 88 to 90 flags?

Slightly off topic, but to me, Greg Boyd was the most inconspicuous player from those late 80's premierships. Just not a player I have any great memory of.

I thought he may have possibly played in 1, possibly 2....he was most deserving, so Im glad he did play in 3.

RIP Dave.

He retired well before I was born but enjoyed the careers of Greg and Russell in the 80s. Greg destroyed Peter Carey in the 88 gf and Russell was insanely courageous

I remember a game at Prospect Oval in the mid 80s where Russell Boyd went for a crazy man high flying mark running with the flight of the ball. Kym Klomp came from the other way and not surprisingly cleaned Rusty up in mid-flight. Boydy spun through the air like a helicopter blade then smacked face first into the ground. Dwayne Russell's dad was sitting nearby and said to his mate, I think he's just killed Boydy.

Rusty sat up, looked around, got up and played on.

I remember a similar marking attempt at footy park running and leaping into an oncoming pack, never taking his eye off the ball, that he didn't get up from.

R.I.P Dave Boyd , I was too young to see him play but he was always up there in the Port Royal Family .
Greg Boyd to me was a classy player who I always thought under achieved a little considering his talent whereas Russellprobably got the best out of himself .

Never saw him play yet feel the loss of his passing. Following Port'll do that to ya.
Thanks Davey Boyd for who you were and what you gave.

Carn Gregory, are you trying to make me feel like a very old campaigner, Davey Boyd didn't retire until the end of 1960, what year did you start going to the footy? ;)

I remember 1960 watching the GF or what I could see of it from the high tower at the City Baths.
First real memories were South in '64 :( and then the '65 GF which I went to and the 2nd Semi that yr.
Totally hooked on Port by then.
