Renowned cricket writer Peter Roebuck has been found dead in a South Africa hotel room. Only aged 55yo.

I always enjoyed Roebuck's writing style and cricket insights.

Cricket writer Peter Roebuck dies

RIP.

Was a big fan of his commentary on the ABC as well.

Any whispers on cause of death?

I'll leave it to the individual to connect the dots.

According to one report, Roebuck appeared to be in a disturbed state last night. He was spoken to by police in his room on the sixth floor of the Southern Sun Hotel Newlands in Capetown around 10pm.

It is believed police removed personal items from his room.

Very sad, ABC's coverage of cricket absolutely creams ch 9. Always have the sound down on the tv and listen to the ABC. Won't sound the same now without Peter.
I will second that even my Dad used to do that. Awfull news and thoughts with family

I think i am right he had issues a few years ago about his days at some Colleage or am i thinking of some one else.

Sad news indeed. Roebuck had a few personal issues and was regarded as very strange within the cricket community. He was charged with assault a few years ago after applying "corporal punishment" to some young black cricketers under his care..Wonderful commentator, will be missed.

Peter Roebuck always made me think. That's what I liked about him. Some times you had to say, piss off, to what he wrote or said, but he was very rarely bland.

He was an outsider. This mornings ABC1 Offsiders program gave him a really nice tribute. You can watch on the page linked below as well as listen to the audio links of other ABC cricket and sports commentators comments on Roebuck.

But I liked this bit Gideon Haig said about him.

He was so fresh,
so different,
so off the reservation,
so unpredictable,
so whimsical,
so acerbic, that he made it easy for all those writers (in Oz) that came after him to take more liberties.....

Kerry O Keefee gave the best tribute summed it up really well in his unique style.

Yes Kerry was very good. Loved the story with about 2:30 to go about IQ levels.

Assault conviction

In 1999, while working as a commentator in South Africa Roebuck met three cricketers, all aged 19, and offered to coach them, inviting them to live at his home in England. He warned them beforehand that he would use corporal punishment if they failed to obey his "house rules". He caned all three men on their buttocks at different times for misbehaviour and in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to three charges of common assault. He told the court, "Obviously I misjudged the mood and that was my mistake and my responsibility and I accept that."[2]

It could get ugly!

Sex assault claims emerge in Peter Roebuck death inquest

SOUTH African police have launched an inquest into the death of cricket commentator Peter Roebuck after the esteemed journalist plunged six storeys to his death from a Cape Town hotel room.

Police captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed last night that Roebuck, 55, died at about 9.15pm on Saturday. The matter was being treated as suicide.

It is understood Roebuck had earlier been spoken to by Cape Town police, who were investigating claims of sexual assault

....

The Daily Telegraph has learned Roebuck, staying on the sixth floor of the hotel, plunged to his death after jumping out of a window with police still in the room.

He landed on the awning outside the entrance to the hotel. Police removed personal items from his room and took his body to the mortuary yesterday morning.

A source said: "The police came to his room and wanted to speak to him. I'm told he was being questioned for sexual assault."

Edit - his employer the Sydney Morning Herald confirm the sexual assault story.
