We are gathered to mourn the passing of the Brisbane Lions' 2001 season, who died just before birth.

Okay, not exactly. One bad loss doesn't cancel out all the good things from the game against Hawthorn.

But to lose so badly, against a team with most of it's tall players out injured, is really a sobering incident for those of us who were about to go out and bet the house on a Brisbane premiership.

The important question is, what can we learn from this result?

Bad luck about the loss. This game will mean nothing when you meet us again in round 1. Port were beaten badly in the final in 99 and we came out an won our first 3 games of the season which included victories in Sydney and Brisbane.

You have travelled a lot lately so this 2 weeks break will refresh your team and I will expect a harder and more determined Brisbane side in round 1.

I agree Tom, tonight's result was absolutely shocking, I had no idea we could be that bad.

I mean I am sure the travel contributed in some way, BUT it's no excuse. It's just a shame that our first game of the season is against Port at Footy Park, but it could also work to our advantage, I mean I'm SURE the boys learned a hell of a lot tonight, I hope the loss really stings so they come out breathing fire in Round 1.

But yeah, it hit hard tonight.

any loss is hard to take but when you lose because of no guts and with a pathetic score line its worse than painful!
Maybe some of the $95000 should be used to reimbursthe brave souls who ventured to Footy Park last night

hmmmmmm

I thought before the game that it might be better to lose than win, as far as round 1 is concerned, as I think you learn more from a loss than a win.

I don't know what Brisbane will learn from that loss though. Apart from "we will not do anything like that again"....but it is not as though they can say "well if we improve our kick outs we will win"...very much a wasted opportunity in all regards IMHO.

I agree ptw, there isn't a whole lot to take out of such a performance. All I hope is that it stings like hell, and I know they WILL put in a MUCH better performance in Round 1, be ready Port!!!!!!

oh...Josh....its Dew....and we have known about him for some time. He was just making up for "that" kickout at the Gabba in 1998 which cost us a win and gave you the draw !!!

ON YA STEWIE !!!!

The thing that sticks in my throat, is not that we lost but how we lost.

We can take nothing away from that match, we were a rabble all over the ground. Our midfield were well beaten.

I want some answers from the caoching staff. That performance was a coaching nightmare.
We were yet again out coached, How many more times is this going to happen before someone in authority at the club asks why.
Just look at the recent reults againts North, Carlton, and Essendon in the real season.
Nup things are looking real grim.

Well, I hate the Richmond creed of blaming the coach.

They could either be so shocked by themselves they are indeed gone for 2001 or use it as motivation.

I would hope come rnd 1 they are stung into action & determined to erase that memory!

Okay there is not a lot you can take out of the match. Whitey went in half fit and copped a couple of cheap shots. Lynch was getting splinters on the bench. The Lions were disorganised on the night. Doesn't mean they will be disorganised every game does it? Voss and Hart to come back in, can only be better. There is a fine line between winning well and losing badly. Just look at Essendon's pre-season form. Their players have been coming back steadily but Hird is still missing. Watch the others step up when they have somebody leading by example. Same goes for the Lions and Voss. Once courageous act and suddenly, they all know what to do. The Lions were simply out of position all night and did not attack the ball for the whole match. They robbed the backline to try Leppitsch up forward. Seldom works for Carlton with Silvagni and the same applies here. The signs were bad but the ingredients are still there. The Lions just need to cook on the right heat!!
