"versing"

Where did this expression come from? "The Saints are versing the Swans on Friday?" All the kids at school say it and it drives me balmy. There is no such word as versing, although given it's popular usage amongst school kids may become proper usage.

I totally understand where you are coming from there Raskolnikov. It's up there with that word (can't remember what it was) that was used constantly by the Big Brother housemates this year. Broadcast nationally nearly every night of the week and they were using a word that didn't exist!

Tapestry,

The word you are thinking about is "confliction".

As for "versing" haven't heard anyone use it yet, but I am not surprised. The other one that seems to be infiltrating society is spelling lose or losers with two "o"s.

Obviously the 'kids at school' spoken about in the first post are not using it in that context.

They are incorrectly using it as a synonym for 'opposing'

I think :o
thats the context, its a colloqual expansion of versus

me and mike gonna be versing you's all, source mate source...

haha...

it started a few years ago, with the pokemon craze. you 'build' a character up, teach it stuff and skills, and then you 'verse' someone who has done the same...

obviously comes from 'versus'.

just typical language evolution, really...no different than trying to make sense of "punching on with doveton blokes", really...

'punching on'? punching on WHAT???

blame america.

Kanga?

Versus is the Latin word for against.

When it's StKilda versus Sydney, that should be obvious.

But the derivative "versing" is what happens when kids don't get taught to speak properly.
"Who are StKilda versing this week?"
There's no such word.

I reckon it comes from kids hearing the word versus and thinking of it as the future tense of the verb, 'verse'. Example: when St Kilda verses Sydney on Friday.

If verses is the word, then you must be able to verse someone. Present tense 'versing', past tense 'versed'.

All of which is completely wrong, sloppy, ignorant and should be stamped out.

Hear, hear, to the person who started this post. :)

(And don't get me started on 'hear, hear', as opposed to the incorrect and increasingly common 'here, here'! ;))

It is due to commentators like Eddie and Derm using 'verse' instead of 'versus' when reading out the teams. E.g. on Friday Night Football the screen will show 'Essendon vs Collingwood' and they'll read it out as verse. Silly bastards.

Do you mean 'intellect'? I hated the chick that started that.

Billy on SEN has invented "succint" as a verb.

"Could you just succinct that for us'. In other words give us a summary"

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!
