Veterans list to be increased?

The AFLPA are requesting that the veterans list allows for 3 veterans instead of two according to the Herald Sun. This would allow Carlton to put Kouta on the list without first delisting Macca or Ratts and would save us a heap of room on the TPP. Considering the AFL wouldn't take Kouta's 10 years service into account and strictly enforced the 30 years old before 1st January rule, I can not see them going for this. A worthy trade off would be simply allowing us to swap Kouta for one of the others to spare them the indignity of being picked back up in the draft. The only benefit for the club would be not having to waste a pick on redrafting one of them but then they could use their last pick earned from the delisting anyway as it is unlikely another club would be so selfish as to try to draft them.

Will it go through or will the outcry from interstate clubs with less eligible veterans maintain the status quo?

There should be no limit on the number of vets you have on your list. If you have 15 players who have played the number of seasons required to qualify then you should be able to put them all on the Vets list. Limiting it to two is a poor decision so bumping it to three is fine by me even though there should be no limit at all.

I don't think the interstate clubs would mind (not Port Adelaide at least) and I think it should also be for as many veterans that qualify as possible.

Imagine the extra room we could find on our Salary Cap if Paxman, Francou, James, Kingsley, Primus and Wanganeen were on our Veterans List.

I say bring it on as it will only make us stronger!

Scott, the criteria is 30 years old before Jan 1 and 10 years service for the same club. This would leave teams like Port and Freo at a disadvantage because they haven't been in the AFL as long. Not sure if Port could claim for players being with them in the SANFL though. Paxman wouldn't qualify based on that.

I think that if a team has a player for 10 years that they should be given assistance to keep those players by granting them the vets concession and these veterans are part of the character and the traditions of clubs but the idea has been criticised roundly before by clubs who don't have the same concessions to work with at the time.

The Veterans List works a little differently for the likes of Port Adelaide and Paxman is already listed in our side as a Veteran.

Please see below on how the Veterans List is currently worked out, I have highlighted the part that applies to Port Adelaide.

Collective Bargaining Agreement 1998-2003

Part D - General Matters

26. Veterans List

26.1

a) An AFL Club may nominate for each AFL Season up to two eligible Players to be transferred from its Primary List to the Veterans List or to be classified as a veteran on its Primary List, provided the transfer or classification occurs by 31 January in the relevant AFL Season.

b) An AFL Club who classifies a Player on its Primary List as a veteran, may, at a later stage, but no later than 31 January in the relevant AFL Season, transfer the Player to the AFL Club’s Veterans List. A Player who is transferred to the AFL Club’s Veterans List cannot be transferred back to the Primary List of the AFL Club.

26.2 A Player is eligible for inclusion on an AFL Club’s Veterans List or to be classified as a veteran, if:

a) the Player has been at the AFL Club on the Primary List for at least ten (10) years; and
b) the Player is 30 years of age or older.

Provided that in the case of Adelaide and Fremantle, a Player will be eligible if he:

is 30 years of age or older; and
has been on the AFL Club’s Primary List since inception of the AFL Club into the AFL Competition.

And in the case of Port Adelaide, a Player will be eligible if he:

is 28 years of age or older; and
has been on the AFL Club’s Primary List since the inception of the AFL Club into the AFL Competition.

Once an AFL Club to which these exceptions apply has been in the AFL Competition for 10 years, the exception will cease to apply to that AFL Club and thereafter the provisions of sub-clauses 26.2(a) and (b) will apply.

26.3 Once a Player has been included on the Veterans List of an AFL Club, the Player’s name shall remain on that list until the Player leaves that AFL Club.

26.4 The Veterans List of an AFL Club must be finalised by that AFL Club by 31 January in the relevant AFL season.

Thanks for the information, seems to be fair with the 10 year clause a nice insertion to put them on an equal footing with the other clubs.

Can't remember the detail but some AFL clubs did object to the veterans list, I guess I need to look at those that like to trade their players away and don't have many qualifiers to get my answer there. ;)
