Neil Sacshe from Footscray is a quadraplegic after an on field accident in about 1972. He is the worst injury I know of.

Plenty of spectators have died at the footy though, usually heart attacks, although one Essendon fan was killed in a fight in the late 70's

Refer to the 2003 Afl Grand Final plenty of on field deaths in that one
Like lame Angwin jokes, these are generally not funny and are getting quite annoying

Oh sorry Zeke lame joke is your ability to think that cause you have over 1500 posts you are some sort of legend on this board.

I think we have an 'Angry Newbie of the Year' award recipient in our midst.

I can't think of any VFL/AFL deaths but a few years back there was a guy who played for Rockbank Football Club that had a heart attack at half time and died. RIP

Death at the footy

I was involved in a Superrules game in Melbourne this year (2003) in which at the end of the game a player dropped dead from a heart attack.

How old was he?

A long time back (like, in the 70s) a second cousin (or something like that, my mum's family is massive and I can't remember exactly how I'm related to all of them) - died at footy training after getting a cut to the scalp a few days before.

He ran a warp-up lap and dropped dead. Apparently a clot from the scalp wound came loose and he had a stroke.

With the guy who broke his neck at the Western Oval - it's spelt Sachse.

During a game between Essendon and Footscray in 1939, Footscrays Ambrose Palmer suffered a severely fractured skull (in 9 places) and a fractured jaw (in 6 places) when he was squashed between two Essendon players. He didn't die. (He was also a champion boxer.)

A fan, died after being hit in the head during a fight in the late 70's during (or after) a game between carlton and fitzroy IIRC, at princess park. And because of this, the league outlawed bringing your own beer to games at the end of that season.

It hapened in the early '80's and the person who got hit in the head was a member of the Carlton Grog Squad...

He was actually taken to hospital and lasted a few weeks before dying - but I spose it's all one and the same really.....

Can't remember the name, but yes, it was a De La Salle player, I think in the Club 18s. He was a medicine student or recent graduate as well.

Les Witto in 1926 broke a arm playing for Carlton v Geelong, tetanus set in and he died 9 days later.

Phil Skehan palying foer Willy on 1921 died from injuries in a collsion a few days after the game , he palyed in South Melbournes 1918 premiership

Ron Doig South Freo in 1932 died of injurie sthe night after a final and Stan Poole in 1940 another South Freo player died of injuries suffered in a game
