Reporter Howard Leigh from the Sunday Herald Sun has quoted in his match report that Ash Arrowsmith is a Carlton listed Rookie? Obviously someones not right or does he know something about our Rookies for next year? Or is he just another crap reporter from the Herald Sun?

Arrowsmith played in a Carlton practice game before the season began. I wouldn't be surprised if he attended/reported on that particular game and the name stuck with him as he was very impressive.

You're right, however.

Ash was drafted as a midfielder with the Eagles and has been played predominately in the forward line with the Bullants and has really done well.

I really hope he gets rookied with us.

(I am incredibly bias tho.)

Sorry to rain on your parade, but if you don't hate Gold Coast already you're going to hate them more after you hear this.

Gold Coast have the right to pick up to 10 of the best mature aged players in the country. I.e. before the draft. The criteria are that they must have been in the system before and have been overlooked. E.g. previous AFL player who has nominated for the draft since being dropped or any other player who has nominated for a previous draft. That pretty much means almost every player worth his salt playing in the VFL/WAFL/SANFL etc. In 2007 for example there were 1200 nominees for the draft including most of the main contenders to get picked up this year (e.g. Sewell, Hibberb, Stephenson etc...).

Sucks big time.

I've said it plenty of times on here before, but I really do hope we give Arrowsmith another opportunity next year - be it on the senior or rookie list.

That is, of course, if the GC don't get him first which they may well.

Every time I have watched the Bullants he has impressed me. Drafted as a mid by the Eagles, but he has really done well as a forward target capable of pushing up the ground if need be.

As others have stated, now with the GC coming into the comp, followed by Western Sydney, all clubs need to broaden their horizon in terms of recruiting - and players that show signs at VFL have to be, at the very least, considered by AFL clubs including our own.

Arrowsmith fits that category. He's having a good season so I'd be surprised and annoyed if we weren't exploring that possibility.

Saad from the Bullants has plenty of ability.
What about Peter Faulks of Williamstown?

Think both are well worth at least rookie spots. Could see either getting senior games at Carlton in 2011 however this is based on seeing both play only 3 times.

Saad has really impressed me... marks very well, is quick, is a really good kick... undersized yes... but does have very good qualities...

His hangers then quickly running and kicking the goal from 50 m against Casey was something special... and his tackling, harrassing, leading and kicking against Willie was first rate...

Definitely would love to us see rookie list him...

Next they wll get a 50 point head start for every game.

They are gong to be unstoppable

Time for my once yearly, Big Footy, pitch to get Todd Grima back on an AFL list.

Ex-Geelong Rookie (kicked around 35-40 in his last year in the VFL) who is leading the SANFL goal-kicking with 56 goals, 3 goal-a-game average. Brother of North Melbourne's Nathan Grima.

Here's a link to his player profile.

Isaac Smith was traded during the season from QLD club Redan and has developed quickly.

So Ballarat's in Queensland now ;)

FYI, Redan has had a strong connection with North Ballarat. Plenty of Roosters boys go play for Redan when the go back to the Ballarat FL and plenty of Redan boys get promoted to the Roosters.

Derek Micallef and Orren Stephenson are two ex-Redan boys. Actually would love to see Stephenson get a crack at AFL level. :thumbsu:

Meh

Congrats for trying to make a point :thumbsu: on what exactly? :D

Smith was 'traded' from Redan mid way through the season but, as you say, has strong contacts at NB as he is going to uni there...

Top pick up though, and certainly one player who has risen up some recruiters rankings in recent weeks (last 5 to be exact :p)

Would be a big rise for Smith to go from Ballarat FL to AFL in two years, good luck to him though :thumbsu:

You sound like you watch a bit of VFL HFF, I've always had a alot of time for Stephenson, do you think he could make it at AFL level?

Mate, I love the VFL, second best comp bar the AFL :thumbsu:

In all honesty, not much to talk about RE ruckmen, really only Stephenson & Russel Gabriel (Frankston) that are the standouts in the VFL..

Anything else?

Hartigan is a keeper, well and truly..

Was shocked that he wasn't drafted in either drafts last year. I had him going late second round in my phantom last year.

I still think he has loads to offer and must be given a chance this year whether that be as a rookie or on the main list. He deserves a chance.

Orren Stephenson did a pre-season spell at Carlton with then Roosters team-mate Michael Jamison a few years back. Reports indicated he didn't have the speed for AFL level and his skills weren't up to scratch.

RE: Hartigan

I would say he is one of up to 4 VFL guys (Michael Hibberd, Ed Curnow, Myles Sewell and himself) that could all go in the main draft, would think that a couple more maybe rising up the radar in recent weeks..

I think he would be a certain starter for Carlton come round 1, 2011 if he was to be drafted by you gents..

RE: Stephenson

Rumor has it (when he trained with Hawthorn last year), Hawthorn were keen on nabbing him in the rookie draft, Orren got a hold of this and turned down the opportunity for a rookie position, wanting to be on the main list as he could not afford to be at such a financial loss (from his own business [not sure what it is to be honest]).

Would think someone may take a chance on him this year in the PSD, perhaps Hawthorn? Adelaide maybe?

Definitely pick Saad up.
There are so many clubs looking for zippy small forwards.
Adelaide, WCE, Brisbane, Richmond even.

Arrowsmith appears to be a bit of a weird one.
Not quite KPP size, but almost KPP height.
Can run, and keep running, but only at the one pace.
Would need to mould himself as a flanker and doesn't quite have the tools at AFL level I fear.

Sewell is another I'm not sold on.
Has absoultely elite endurance, but that is what sets him so far above alot of the VFL players.
Probably question marks around his ability to adapt to AFL pace, and the precision required with foot disposal.
How would you know, though? Could turn into the next Rob Harvey with some in-and-under mongrel, or could be Priddis sans clearance skills if his body can't adapt.
