Went along to the VFL at Cramer St today with CatAttack and gocats2002, here is my report:
GEELONG VS NORTHERN BULLANTS
PRESTON CITY OVAL
Crowd: Approx. 1500
Geelong: 2.2 8.5 11.11 12.13.85
Bullants 5.4 7.6 8.7 14.12.96
GOALS: Geelong: Lonergan 3; S Johnson 3, Gardiner 2; Playfair 2; Maloney 1, Clarke 1
BEST: Geelong: (in no specific order) Callan, Lonergan, S Johnson, Brent Grgic, Maloney, Byrnes, Jovanovich.
Well what can you say, we blew a 22 pont lead at 3 qtr time, we had the breeze coming home, which waas blowing a gale all day but was still favouring our end. The Bullants got on a roll in the last and couldnt be stopped. We did hit the front with about 4 mins to go, but couldnt hold on with the Bullants adding another 2 to seal our fate for the day.
Standout Players. Without a doubt Shannon Byrnes was one of, if not our best player. He provided excellent run all day from defence on occasions and from the midfield. He did a few superb runs in the last, one of which set up Lonergan's late goal. On one occasion, with about 5 secs to go in the match, he tried to do too much and was pinned for holding the ball. But you cannot fault his endeavour and commitment.
Matthew Jovanovich was superb all day in defence, he did stuff up a few times, but apart fro that was solid all day and won his duel. He has been in fine form ever since earning his spot in the team, after missing the first few rounds.
Tim Callan played well today. He may not have been a standout player for us, but he took 2 corageous marks running back with the flight of the ball early on. This really impressed me from the first year player (although he played a few games for us late last year).
Brent Grgic was excellent early on. I didnt see as much of him as the game went on, but he maintained his intensity level and was superb down back, definitely deserves a recall if Sando doesnt perform tomorrow. His long kick helped us out of defence on several occasions and his in close work in defence was fantastic.
David Clarke played a respectable game, without dominating. He did his part setting up a few goals and kicking one of his own. His disposal let us down on occasions, but I put that down to the strong wind carrying the ball that extra five metres.
Overall it was a tight battle all day, and you cant really say one side deserved to win, but when the Cats turned it on in the second it was great to watch.
Until next week, goodbye and hope you enjoyed the report.
NEXT WEEK: Geelong vs North Ballarat
Northen Oval, Ballarat
