VFL Tigers V Port Melbourne

Thought Dow was the most impressive of all. His movement is a bit like Bolton's, just so quick laterally. Needs to get about 5kg's stronger because the ball is knocked out of his hands when he is in packs. Lacks a bit of composure but more strength will help with that. Could be a serious player down the track.

On our young midfielders i rate them in this order:

Sonsie>>>>>>>>Ross>Dow>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>RCD
Hmm talent wise wise about right , I have Ross and Dow about same but diff qualities . Reality Ross should be able to do all jack g can do and more as he’s more agile , it’s up to him, and I hold hope. Dow has way more creative talent , thinks through his disposal ,,,,better by hand than foot but not woeful just not clinical . RCD if we were shit would have played way more footy and I truly believe would be more advanced than he is right now. Prob needs to show something or I can see us parting ways

Dow and Sonsie are a good chance of making it - 150 games plus. The other 2 will need to do a Matthew Kennedy (Carlton) and go from a spud to a stud in a single pre-season.

I'm not writing Ross off yet bc he's showing he can kill it at VFL and he is starting to show improvement at the top level. With our midfield retirements coming up either him or RCD SHOULD BE KEPT. I prefer Ross bc he hits the contest harder and is about the same pace .

R7 report

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Saturday's Round 7 win over Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium.

Tyler Sonsie (33 disposals, four marks, five clearances)

"With 33 disposals, he was really clean in and around stoppage and his huge improvement in his defensive work over the past couple of weeks has been pleasing to see. "

Jack Ross (31 disposals, nine clearances, seven tackles)

"Played a really good game. His attack on the contest and the man was fantastic and he was outstanding around clearance."

Will Martyn (26 disposals, 10 marks, four rebound-50s)

"Has taken steps forward each and every week over the last couple of months. It was great to see him increase his offensive output and his foot skills were brilliant on the day in tough conditions."

Thomson Dow (25 disposals, six tackles, six clearances)

"His lateral movement is an absolute standout. He's engaging around contest exceptionally well and that's really helping him in winning clearances for us moving forward."

Sam Banks (23 disposals, three inside-30s, two goals)

"Played on a wing once again and his work rate really stood out. He kicked two of the better goals that you'll see at VFL footy."

Lachlan Street (23 disposals, 13 rebound-50s, eight marks)

"Continuously positioned himself well and he is in really solid form. He's a vital part of our back six."

Robbie Tarrant (20 disposals, eight marks, six rebound-60s)

"Came back and acquitted himself really well. He led the boys around him in a great manner and he's a formidable opponent for key forwards down back.

Bigoa Nyuon (18 disposals, seven marks, six spoils)

"He had some really good moments, overall he continues to show great form and promise. His intercept marking was a feature, we'd just like to see a few more big spoils which have been a feature of his game over the past few months."

Jake Aarts (17 disposals, eight tackles, four clearances)

"Continues to play the game in the right manner. He's been outstanding for us over the last three weeks and he had eight tackles again on the weekend ands hit the scoreboard as well."

Bailey Henderson (16 disposals, four marks, four inside-50s, one goal)

"Probably had his best game for the season. I thought his hands and cleanness at ground level as well as his first give were as good as I've seen it."

Nathan Oakes (15 disposals, five tackles, five inside-50s)

"We know he'll always attack the man and the ball. This was a highlight once again, but I thought his offensive impact was really pleasing."

Tyler Young (13 disposals, 32 hit-outs, five tackles, six clearances)

"Really new challenge for him in the ruck and we got some great feedback from our AFL midfielders in the way that he attacked the contest and also his ruck work in and around the ground. It was a fantastic step forward in his development."

Austin Johnson (12 disposals, four tackles, two rebound-50s)

"Played on the wing predominately and a little bit of half-back. He was really reliable, he didn't have a standout day but certainly was a valuable contributor."

Tom Brown (11 disposals, four marks)

"A super talented player who we're looking for a little bit of a spike from. He played limited minutes on the weekend and I expect to see him take steps forward with a run under his belt."

Sam Tucker (11 disposals, five marks, five goals)

"Provided a great contest for us and a focal point up forward. Most importantly, he took each and every opportunity in front of goals with really accurate kicking."

Judson Clarke (10 disposals, four inside-50s, three marks)

"His role is one that sometimes does get rewarded on the stats sheet and other times it doesn't. He certainly played his role well on the weekend, but it was just one of those days where we didn't get the reward that he does at other times."

Lachlan Johnson (10 disposals, four marks, three tackles)

"Had his first game for the football club and had a great day. He was really clean and showed great composure with the footy in his hands, and will only benefit from the run."

Ben Miller (nine disposals, four rebound-50s, two marks)

"It was an interesting day for our key backs with very few tall forwards, which was challenge for Ben, but we'd like to see his contest work improve over the next couple of weeks, which we know he's capable of."

Jack Sexton (nine disposals, five tackles, two goals)

"I thought he had a really good game. He's really bought into our culture and our system. He tackles hard and he does the little things on defence, and was also rewarded with two goals."

Matt Parker (seven disposals, four marks, two goals)

"Hit the scoreboard hard early on in the game and brought his trademark defensive actions. Unfortunately, he hurt himself early on in the game and took no further part, but we're hoping he recovers quickly from his ankle injury."

Noah Cumberland (seven tackles, five tackles, three goals)

"He hit the scoreboard which is really important in his role. I feel as though he can step up his defensive actions, which is a highlight of his game when he's firing on all cylinders."

Interesting reading, 2nd game in a row Morris has given Miller a less than flattering report.

I like it , call it like it is

I think he is on thin ice now Miller, he really needs to work out how to get more aggressive physically in contests. It is a weakness you just cannot have as a key position or ruck player at AFL level.

Would be a relief to see Brown have a really decent game, but Morris seems confident that is just around the corner.

dont know what people see in Miller

Even Steve Morris didnt give him a compliment and every player gets one.

Nice way of saying that he was average on the weekend.
I was a fan, but I've gone cold on big Funky now unfortunately. We've had plenty of talls on the list who don't have that natural competitiveness and it never works - Post, Griffiths, Vickery, Elton, Callum Moore to name a few.

Biggy needs to work on being more physical too, but at least he has a strong intercept game which Miller also lacks.

I think that's something you either have or you don't. I reckon he's gone.

Opinions on here about our players are like yoyo's
constantly changing weekly depending on that weeks performance

He is a gun
he wont make it
he is a gun again
he will be delisted

He is a gun again
get rid of him

At least the VFL and AFL are on separate days this week
And the day after as well, so we won't have to hold any players over in case of injury
Given the good state of our injury list, we should be fielding a very strong VFL side this week

Miller is going backwards at a rate of knots. Maybe Gibcus has taken the wind out of his sails and he knows he won't be playing seniors this year especially with Tarrant ahead of him. Pretty natural.

And for all those suggesting this player should be delisted or won't make it, we are 1/3 of the way through the season, who knows what some of those knocking on the door will produce in the next 16 odd games. Some of those being criticised didn't even play on the weekend.

Sonsie gets a go next opportunity surely
Hard side to crack into at the moment. Ross and Dow probably both also in line for next midfield spots, given their strong VFL form as well and that they're probably a little more AFL ready than Sonsie.

Sonsie has oodles of time, and even if he only plays a debut game or two this year, that's still a win.

We have Tarrant and Biggy in the VFL as depth players. Tarrant is good for that depth role, just come in and play a man.

I wonder if Miller would be worth trying up forward in the VFL, given that's still a big hole on the list?

If he's not going to make it as a KPD, why not try him half a season as a VFL forward? What is there to lose if he's going to be cut anyway?

Pre draft he had good straight line speed and good goal kicking results. He's a nice size too.

Dow I can cop, just, but not Ross. Sonsie is the future, get him in ASAP.
