My summary of todays game is that considering we were playing a top side, to get within 10 points in the 3rd quarter was a bloody good effort. If you look at the Collingwood list, we now have 8-10 players injured which significantly hurts our VFL side.

As for individuals today, the following is my assessment;

* Iles; has to stay on our list, was clearly our best and seems to be keeping the midfield together.
* Wood; Decent effort in the ruck, on par with what Chris Bryan was showing at VFL level.
* McCarthy; a beauty, pick 31 you say, well worth that, is an absolute certainty to play AFL footy.
* Pendlebury; if you had seen him today, he looked like a slower, bigger version of Scott, quite impressive on my first view of him
* Dawes; battled all day, had Nathan Carroll on him for extended periods, he's young and developing.
* Egan; dont bother.
* Anthony; landed hard early and winded himself badly, moved up forward and looked promising late
* Barham; i like the look of this kid, but didnt see much of him today, knocked out cold early (no free kick either).
* Stanley; showed patches in the second half of his ability, but his disposal let him down at times.

By the way, no Cox, Cook or Reid, how many changes tommorow i wonder.

Jees he must be very slow.

Not for long. I'd almost bet McCarthy will get a game before Iles and Stanley this season. Barring injury McCarthy would have to be almost odds on to get a game. His age is irrelevant. For me he's the most exciting of our prospects atm, because of the need he fills in the team now and long term. That inside mid position.

I agree. If McCarthy's form continues, he would have to be given the chance before Iles and Stanley. From what I have seen of him, he shows more than either of these two in terms of long term potential.

Sounds Like Wood is Struggling and Could we made a Mistake in Getting him Instead of Hudson?

Dawes is Worrying because Tippet was still there at that time in the draft

Dave, don't jump the gun, mate.

Its a ridiculous statement to make, because Wood is a developing ruckman and will not play consistently week in week out, so be patient.

Also, Dawes is coming off a reco so needs time, especially as a young KP forward. Ow, and lets not start comparing who we could've gotten, PLEASE!

I would rather keep Egan on our list than Cook, Iles and Toovey if the latter three don't show anything. Basically out of the 4, if none of them show anything I'd prefer Egan.

What does the kid have to do?

To put him in that list without putting Stanley in there is a bit direspectful. He's playing better VFL footy and getting more AFL chances than Stanley.

He's playing better VFL footy and getting more chances at AFL level than Egan and on top of that he's younger with more chance to reach his potential through development.

He's only a third year player and he was drafted bottom age. Give him time.

I'll tell you right now Cook will be there in 2009. Egan being there is speculative.

I think Dawes is currently bereft of any confidence. I'll be patient with him , but his performance today was obviously not good.
McCarthy's OK , he just needs to continue to up his fitness base , and make better decisions with the ball. A few kicks were puzzling , and he is a bit too handball happy at the moment , which puts others under the gun.
Stanley must have had 15-20 touches after half time , very prolific , but there is a lack of explosiveness in his game that he needs to be an AFL player.
Wood was good in the ruck , but not at his best around the ground.
Egan did nothing.
Iles was iles , stoic , didn't stop running , but didn't hurt enough with his disposal.
Anthony was OK , but seems to have had a dip in form lately. Attacked the ball well when moved forward , and kicked a nice long goal.
Disappointing to see Barham knocked out early , I was told it was an extremely hard hit.

Forget about Tippet. It is irrelevant. This is my biggest gripe with people's opinions on players. If you are talking about our recruiting it is relevant but where Dawes was selected has nothing to do with him. Dawes has to prove he's good enough to remain on the list, not that he's better than Tippet FFS.

Let's not go overboard with Dawes. It is practically his first year and his first pre season AND he's a key possie player. A lot of you guys were going overboard on Brown last year too.

Wood will be good. Your name should be Pete The Paranoid sometimes I swear Dave ;)

I should have included Stanley.
I did qualify my statement by saying if they all pretty much show nothing in the VFL or AFL then I'd rather have Egan on the list.

Sounds like Reid hasn`t played a game of footy for a little while now! so i think we will be keen to play him against Melbourne. I no we think very highly of him due to him being signed up again for two years ahead of others, it just seemed more a priority to get his signature which makes me think he is going to be a very good player..

Give Dawes time, not a worry in my book! there isnt really a spot for him this season in the ones and i am sure development is key for Dawes this year and to get through a full season. McCarthy sounds as though he is going to be a player and ditto Anthony! plus all these kids we are signing from NSW with Reed, Keefe etc we are well ahead of other teams for sustained success...i am loving the way we are going about it and not prepared to question anything that happens in the VFL results wise - it`s all about development for these players to step up to the ones when they are required!!. I remember alot of people were saying Brown was slow and was a waste of our top 10 pick, it`s hard to get our heads around it but the VFL results mean nothing, development of players is everything...

thats my two cents

I am really looking forward to getting Anthony and/or Goldsack back into the side, but they really need Maxy or even O'Brien to come out. I think either of these players would be an offensive and defensive upgrade on Maxwell, but can't see him getting dropped without being injured.

The younger guys are unlucky because we have had such a good run with short term injuries with blokes in the 22.'

Blokes like Anthony, Goldsack, McCarthy, Reid, and Dawes just need to keep waiting for their chance and performing when they come up.

My bro was the game he said
* McCarthy was our best
* JA was good when he went forward
* Thoolen was very good
* Egan looks to have totally lost interest
* Iles was very quick
* Dawes couldn't get near it until very late in the game
* Casey-Leigh did some very nice things early
* Dyas looked good in patches

two of my ex school mates from caulfield grammar played their first game yesterday. tilly yaman (no 26) and tom sundberg (22).howd they go?
thanks champs

i agree with you but at the game yesterday iles killed it, easily over 30 touches plus two goals, not sure what he has to do?

I'm not even saying 'what does he have to do to get a game?'. I realise that he's young and we've got a very good side at the moment that can be hard to crack into.

All I'm asking is 'what does he have to do for you guys to take him out of the "gone at end of season basket?"'

Interesting summary. Just to show how different views can give different opinions, here's mine on Matty's plus a couple of others. Not quite as generous as Matty!

My summary of todays game is that considering we were playing a top side, to get within 10 points in the 3rd quarter was a bloody good effort. If you look at the Collingwood list, we now have 8-10 players injured which significantly hurts our VFL side.

As for individuals today, the following is my assessment;

* Iles; has to stay on our list, was clearly our best and seems to be keeping the midfield together.

Agreed he played well and is on a streak of good form. He's not polished but he runs hard and presents all the time. Second best for Collingwood but not the midfield cement (see Stanley below).

* Wood; Decent effort in the ruck, on par with what Chris Bryan was showing at VFL level.

Got well beaten in the ruck contests and wasn't very effective around the ground. Not playing to his early promise at the moment and shouldn't shift Bryan on current form. Definately lacks Bryans physical presence even if he does have better skills. More a replacement for a Josh type in the ruck than a Bryan type.

* McCarthy; a beauty, pick 31 you say, well worth that, is an absolute certainty to play AFL footy.

He has plenty of promise but he's very raw yet and has yet to get his head around the team game. Does a fair bit of individual stuff but needs to finish off. Good prospect though.

* Pendlebury; if you had seen him today, he looked like a slower, bigger version of Scott, quite impressive on my first view of him

Long way to go and not anywhere near his big brothers class yet - and right, slow.

* Dawes; battled all day, had Nathan Carroll on him for extended periods, he's young and developing.

Continuing a mediocre season. Not playing as well as he did towards the end of last year. He's spilling marks he would have swallowed last year and his confidence at the contested ball is shot at the moment. It's making him look gun-shy which I don't think is really the case.

* Egan; dont bother.

Agreed. doesn't need comment.

* Anthony; landed hard early and winded himself badly, moved up forward and looked promising late

Jack can get the ball and he can kick it a mile but he needs to find a target more regularly and and to display a bit more judgement in his run. Too often he does some nice run, dodge, weave, and then goes a step too far and gets caught. That said, you've gotta love him!

* Barham; i like the look of this kid, but didnt see much of him today, knocked out cold early (no free kick either).

Absolutely nothing to judge on from Sunday but has displayed a bit to date. Lots more time required yet. The hit that knocked him out was actually perfectly legitimate and in large part, Jacko ran into it. Anyway, Stanley evened up in the third when he KO'd a Sandy player with a similar hip and shoulder. Boo one, cheer the other, but the truth is they were both beauties.

* Stanley; showed patches in the second half of his ability, but his disposal let him down at times.

Collingwood best with 32+ posessions of which 25+ at least hit their targets laces out so I don't know where the comment on disposal comes from. Also did all the defensive midfield bullock work and got the most centre clearances.

By the way, no Cox, Cook or Reid, how many changes tommorow i wonder.

Others:

Dyas. Is not Marty MkII. Still a lot to learn about the game although his natural foot and hand skills are good. His stuff-up in the goalsquare was "rabbit in the spotlight" stuff which can only be eliminated with football, football and more football.

Thoolen. Painfully skinny and gets knocked out of the contest with ease by the bigger VFL bodies. Would get murdered at AFL and is a couple of seasons off.

Casey-Leigh. Potential but also a fair way off. Not his best game on Sunday though and he's shown better eg against Casey ironically enough IIRC.

This game was probably the hardest physical contest we've faced this year and the scores don't really indicate how competative we were. We didn't get blown away in a short spurt like previous weeks and no-one hung their head or gave up. Agree with Matty that it was a bloody good effort.Club officials seemed pretty pleased with the effort over all too.

VFL Report: Zebras down Pies

Sandringham recorded a 30-point triumph over Collingwood in a low-scoring encounter in front of an impressive crowd at the Trevor Barker Beach Road Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The third-placed Zebras proved too experienced for the Magpies in the round nine encounter, winning 11.13 (79) to 6.13 (49).

Collingwood was, however, without a number of their key senior players, namely Paul Licuria, Tyson Goldsack and the injured Ryan Lonie, as well as Ben Reid, Shannon Cox and Ryan Cook, who were all listed as emergencies for the senior side’s clash with Melbourne on the following day.

With this in mind, despite booting only six goals, Gavin Brown and his coaching staff will have returned to the Lexus Centre with plenty of positives, namely the efforts of midfielders Sam Iles (34 possessions, two goals) and Danny Stanley (32 touches, five tackles), whilst defender Kris Pendlebury (28 disposals), older brother of Scott, was prolific in defence, his second efforts and ability to apply pressure a highlight.

Justin Crow was again one of the side’s most consistent players, shifted onto Melbourne’s dangerous rookie listed Trent Zomer in the second term, restricting him to only the solitary major after the quarter time break. First year onballer John McCarthy (19 possessions, five tackles) was again busy at the stoppages, as well as providing some run through the midfield.

Alan Toovey (shoulder) and Luke Casey-Leigh (groin) both made their returns from injury, while Tim Walsh returned to the side in the absence of Reid.

The major injury concern for the Woods centered on Jaxson Barham, who lay motionless on the turf after what appeared to be a heavy collision in the early minutes of the opening quarter. The 19-year-old suffered concussion, and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Collingwood trailed the home side by 19-points at the first break, though they managed to work their way back into the contest following the five minute pause in which Barham was stretchered from the field. In the minutes preceding Barham’s injury, the Zebras had piled on two quick goals, through Mark Jamar and Addam Maric, and continued to drive into attack with menace; however the temporary respite served as a positive for the Pies, who began the task of working their way back into the match, thanks largely to their one-percenters. Iles led the way, winning a holding the ball free kick within range and goaling, a goal which was followed late in the term by first-gamer Tilly Yahman, who snapped his first in an opportunistic fashion, ending the term with the momentum of the game again in the balance.

The four goals scored in the second quarter were evenly split between the two sides, Sandringham leading the Magpies by only 16-points at the long break. With the play becoming far less free-flowing, and the ball spending more time in midfield stoppages, it appeared as if the Zebras were to take the honours when Demon pair Chris Johnson and Matthew Whelan both goaled within minutes of each other, though Iles’ second within minutes of the siren kept his side in the hunt.

When 150-gamer Nigel Carmody capitalised on his side’s swift ball movement from defence to attack in the opening stages of the third term, the Pies drew within two straight kicks, however it was as close as they were to get for the rest of the afternoon, both side’s haunted by inaccurate kicking in front of goal, the Zebras booting 4.8 to Collingwood’s 2.6 in the second half.

Though the margin was a gettable 27-points at the three quarter time huddle, the Zebras made all the running in the final term, running out a comfortable 30-point victor. Key defender John Anthony was released from the shackles of the backline in the final term when trialled in attack, booting the side’s only goal for the term, as well as having a hand in a number of forward forays.

After struggling in the final term in recent weeks, Brown was satisfied with his team’s ability to sustain their intensity for the duration of the match.

“It was pleasing (to play four quarters) after a few weeks of not quite getting it right, but in the second half the endeavour was there, so while we lost by 30-points, we did finish off the game fairly strongly.”

“The younger players stood up; we were very young out there, but they were good. To their credit, their effort was there, and they tried to get it right.”

Brown highlighted the efforts of the side’s most consistent performers.

“Both Iles and McCarthy were very pleasing, both won plenty of the ball, as did Danny Stanley. (Kris) Pendlebury was also good, Jack Anthony worked hard, and I thought Justin Crow was again very good down back on Trent Zomer. McCarthy’s not far away (from senior selection), there are a few areas of his game he’ll need to keep working on, but no he isn’t far away, and I’m sure he’ll be close to getting a run later in the season. Wood was much better two weeks ago (against Werribee). He wasn’t quite himself today, but he did show form in patches.”

The Magpies face off with the Northern Bullants for the second time this season at Princes Park next Saturday afternoon at 2pm, and will be out to avenge their 51-point loss to their rivals when they last met in round three.
