Hi VFL fans,

Not sure whether anyone here has seen or heard of this but i've been doing a project with ABC radio in Melbourne where i have been going to a game with random fans from each AFL club in order to pick one to follow. Long story, originally from Newcastle, been in Melbourne for 4 years and i'm not one to rush into a decision...

There's a blog of my adventures at http://whatsmyteam.wordpress.com and i'm on ABC 774 on Mondays and Fridays at about quarter to five talking about it.

Anyhow, on Friday afternoon i got ambushed by the President of Williamstown in the VFL who called in to get me to go along and see a VFL game as well. So i am going to see his club on Sunday afternoon to see Williamstown play the Bendigo bombers.

To be honest, i don't know a lot about the VFL - being from up North so i thought i'd see if any of you VFL fans wanted to give me a low down, tell me who i should follow, a bit about the clubs or whatever. Comments here or in the comments section of the blog would be great. I'd love to write a few posts about the VFL over the course of the season, but need to know what i'm talking about... might even slip in the odd ABC radio update over the year as well...

He also said the club is coming off 2 draws in 3 games - is that for real? Does that happen often? Also, are there other VFL fan forums around?

Draws don't happen often at all, so 2 in 3 games is VERY rare.'

If you know your AFL, then there are a number of Collingwood listed players playing for Williamstown (the Seagulls, Blue with yellow sash) and Essendon players play for Bendigo (the Bombers, Black with Red sash).

Yeah, he did say they were affiliated with Collingwood. Can anyone explain how the relationship between the VFL club the AFL clubs work - they are totally seperate teams or does one strucutre run both? I assume its not like the reserve grade in league.

Also, is every VIc AFL club affiliated to a VFL club and vice versa? What about if a player excels at VFL level can he be moved up to his AFL club or does he have to go through the draft?

What happens is that Victorian based teams are aligned with a VFL club which with the exception of Geelong (they have their own team which is definitely a reserves team) are different clubs. However some AFL clubs provide a coach who works as an assistant at an AFL club (e.g.Box Hill Hawks) whilst others are not employed in any way by an AFL club. Also the Kangaroos are unique in that they have an alignment with both North Ballarat and Tasmania where players are allocated to these clubs.

There are 2 teams in the VFL (Frankston and Port Melbourne) who have no alignment with an AFL club.

Those players outside of an AFL list need to be drafted at the end of the season to be eligible to play for an AFL club.

G'day Marcus, what time of the day are you on 774?

The only VFL dedicated forum would be www.vflfooty.com, but you will find a lot of the posters there, also post here on the Bigfooty board.

I'd suggest going to see the standalone sides rather than Williamstown, who have an alignment with Collingwood.

I am on Fridays (when i pick a game and get someone to call in to take me) and Mondays (when i report on the weekend) at about quarter to five - give or take a bit. The segment expeands and contracts depending on how much real news there is...

Yeah, i did hear that and Collingwood is a bit of a problem :) Although after today's hospitality it may be a bit of a challenge to get on anyone else..

You got a close match down there today. The Seagulls fans hearts must be under pressure near the end of games.

And thank god there were no scoreboard dramas down there again!!!!

I had to leave before the end to get to Telstra Dome to see Richmond but the club President called me and gave me the score update at the end. A great tight finish.

It was a great arvo got to share a table with Matthew Lloyd, have a chat with Barry Round and see a team at work that probably would have wiped Richmond off the park last night! I've only had a chance to update the Richmond game on the blog (http://whatsmyteam.wordpress.com) but i will get to the Williamstown story during the week.
