VFLW MATCH REPORT – ROUND 8 VS. CASEY DEMONS
Apr 26, 2021
Article: Rhayne Philipson

An early start than usual due to a double header. There was a slight breeze and it was overcast but the girls were fired up and ready to go. The Borough girls were out on the field right on 10am when the siren sounded for the start of the first quarter!
Casey Demons started out strong with the first 2 goals going to them. It didn’t take long till our hard work was paying off and Sabrina Frederick came through with 2 goals as well keeping us in the lead by 2 points when quarter time came around.

3 minutes into the second quarter and Casey took the lead again kicking the first goal of the quarter. With our backline holding strong and help from Bromage and Preshke it wasn’t long until Wilson kicked the Borough third goal making the scores level going into half time.
With the scores being level we had a chat to the coach Lachie Harris about his thoughts on how the girls were playing. “Our tackle count was very high because we were reacting. We put a lot of tackles down because we were second the ball, as simple as that”.

Third quarter was well underway when Casey snags another goal getting back out in the lead. With Casey keeping the ball down their end most of the quarter it allowed them to score another 3 goals on top of us leaving it at a 26 point lead attired 3/4 quarter time.

Fourth quarter comes around and Casey just kept kicking goals. Sabrina Frederick was able to kick one last goal in the final quarter but unfortunately the siren sounded and the end scores were Borough 28 defeated by Casey 69.

With the girls getting defeated, we were lucky enough to have chat to coach, Lachie Harris after the game to see what his thoughts were on the game. “It’s always difficult to lose but a real benefit for us to to learn what it take to play at that next level and Casey are a quality outfit so it was really good to test that opposition”.

We also got to chat with him to see who he thought were the outstanding players today. “Thought Pip Peshke was really good at the start until she went down. Sophie Locke was really good in her first game back. Sabrina with 3 goals is a really good reward for effort. Sansonetti and Clair Dyett were good at times and Kuys as well.

It was a tough game but the Borough girls should still be very proud and well done to Lachie on coaching a great team.

R9 Darebin v Port Melbourne

DAY:
Saturday, 1st May 2021.

TIME: 12:00pm

SOCIAL MEDIA UPDATES: Facebook / Twitter

VENUE: Bill Lawry Oval, Westgarth Street, Northcote

PARKING: Street parking around ground, entry to the venue is via main entrance on Westgarth Street.

ENTRY / TICKETING: All Round 9 VFLW matches are free and open to the public.

WEATHER: Mostly Sunny, Temperature: 24 degrees.

Sophie Molan joins some of her fellow AFLW team mates in the Port line up this week slotting straight into the midfield. Katherine Smith also makes her Port debut on the half back line. Frederick has been a star performer for Port in her three games so far and she has threatened to really take a game apart at this level and kick a big bag. Will this be the week? The Falcon defenders have a mighty job on their hands with Frederick and the clever duo of Locke and Harley to watch.

The Falcons have had a tough start to the season with some heavy losses and some close ones thrown in. They did, however, manage to snag a win against Nth Melbourne in R6 and they would have been pretty chuffed about that given Nth's past close ties with Melbourne Uni who were Darebin's biggest rival in the competition pre AFLW days.

Just on the Falcons, what a fantastic club they have been for women's football. If you look at a Darebin team sheet from a single game pre AFLW the lineup was like an AFLW All Australian team.... Daisy Pearce, Lauren Pearce, Hickey, Paxman, Brennan, McDonald, Birch, Vescio, Arnell, Dal Pos (who is in the Falcon line up this week), Exon.... to name a few. It's been a bit of a rough time for them more recently but as a well known Vulcan would say...may they live long and prosper.

I think Port will get back on the winners list with a comfortable win this week. Port by 22.

Great to see Molan in the thick of it with a BOG game - 20 Disposals, 1 Mark 6 Tackles. 1 Goal 1 Behind.

Other Richmond players:
Frederick 16D, 1M, 2T, 0.2
McLaren 12D, 3M
McClelland 10D, 4M, 3T, 1.0
Sansonetti 10D, 1M, 3T

Emily Harley had a pretty good game kicking 4.3.

Yeah I just mentioned her after I listed the Richmond players.

She has a few tricks but probably one of those players that gets caught between the two levels.

18 degrees and sunny. The Borough girls were feeling ready to go head-to-head with Darebin at the Northcote cricket ground at 12pm. As the siren commences for first quarter, the girls waste no time and Molan kicks a great goal from 10 metres out. It doesn’t take long after our first goal for Darebin to steady the ship and add a goal onto their scoreboard. Darebin get into a rhythm as they kick another goal. Em Harley brings the scores back close to even when she snaps one right in front of the goals.

As second quarter rolls around, the girls are fired up and it doesn’t stop as McClelland kicked a great goal to put us back in a comfortable lead. It doesn’t last long when only a few minutes later Darebin kick one more for their team leaving us with only a 3-point lead. Darebin waste no time and sneak one more goal in before quarter time. It was a jam-packed second quarter with goals from both teams going left, right and centre.

Third quarter starts and only 30 seconds in, Sophie Locke is back! She kicks a beauty from 15m out from the goal square! Em Harley compliments Locke’s goal as she kicks another one straight after, giving the girls a 9-point lead. Darebin put up a good fight and add another goal to their score, but we are still able to hold the lead by 3 points, leaving the girls on their toes. The Borough kick another goal leaving the girls back at a comfortable 9 point lead. Put that on the scoreboard!

As third quarter comes to an end, the girls are left with an 11-point lead to Darebin and goals from Molan, McClelland, Locke, and Harley with 2.
The siren sounds for the final quarter and the girls are still nervous. Em Harley seems to settle the nerves as she kicks another one for the Borough and another straight after that with assistance from Sabrina Frederick. The Borough girls leave Darebin on 5 goals and 3 behinds and do not allow them to score at all for the last quarter leaving us as winners!

Finals scores were Borough 57 defeated Darebin 33.
It only took 7 days for the winning vibes to come back.

Port Melbourne media team asked exclusive questions to Lachie Harris and how he thought the game went and if he was happy with the way the girls performed. “Really good to bounce back with a win, the girls were really focused on that. Darebin have been an improving outfit. A win is really good for the group”.

“I really tried to do some new things. Really being brave and taking the game on. It didn’t come off at times, but it continues to challenge their mindset.”
We also got Lachie to open up about his honest thoughts about today’s game. “We played to the opposition some of the time. We weren’t proactive enough for the footy. We were kind of steady in the back half. Take on some of the learning from the first half, where we were pretty poor to be honest. But it was good to get away.”

We also got to have a chat to Lachie Harris at the end of the day to see who he thinks the stands outs were in today’s game. “Em Harley 4 goals, great. Catherine Smith down back and Clare Dyett provided really good shape for us.”

Great job to coach, Lachie Harris and the Borough girls for another great and nail bitting game to watch. You made the atmosphere at the Northcote cricket ground unbelievable.

We all can’t wait to see what you bring to the table next week when you go up against the Southern Saints.

Darebin 2.2-14 4.2-26 5.3-33 5.4-34 defeated by
Port Melbourne 2.5-17 3.6-24 6.8-44 8.10-58
Goal Kickers: E. Harley 4, S. Locke, L. McClelland, N. Borg, S. Molan.

AFLW Players:
Port:
McLaren, McClelland, Molan, Sansonetti, Brancatisano, Smith
Saints: Saulitis, Meyer, Priest, A Burke

For the Saints, tall forward Tara Bohanna has been a great target over the season with an average of 4.1 marks per game and has hit the scoreboard on a regular basis with 10 goals. Hannah McLaren could have the job on Bohanna or if Hannah is preferred on ten half back line as has been the case on occasions the task could fall on McClelland who can play forward or back.

Port captain Melissa Kuys has led from the front this season and her tussle with Mel Bertuna who has found some good form in recent rounds could play a part in which team comes out on top a the end of the game.

Again I think Port will come away with a good win as its hard to see the Saints being able to hold down the Locke, Harley, Saxton-Jones forward trio and the inclusion last week of Molan and Brancatisano this week has only strengthened their line up. Additionally Port players Kuys, Dyett, and Bromage have been in super form.

Saints wont be easy as other teams have found this season. Port by 11.

Game *might* also be on the VFLW Youtube stream. Search "VFLW" on Youtube closer to the bounce time of 2pm.

Practically lived in the Saints forward half in the first quarter, they scored 3 goals before we even looked like scoring and the game was over pretty quick smart. Well done Saints. Too good on the day.

Interesting fact - The Saints VFLW team is run by Sandringham Football Club and they are the holders of the VFLW license. St Kilda passed their VFLW license on to Sandringham when they entered the AFLW.

Doesn't get any easier with a clash with unbeaten top of the table Pies next and then 4th placed Casey who beat us pretty convincingly a couple of rounds ago and have looked a totally different team since they have added some AFLW talent into their side. Williamstown didn't score against them in their clash on the weekend.

VFLW MATCH REPORT – ROUND 10 VS. SOUTHERN SAINTS
May 10, 2021 | News
Article: Rhayne Philipson.

The Borough girls were fired up ready to take on the Southern Saints on Saturday at 2 o’clock at the ETU Stadium.

The first bounce hits the ground, and the first quarter is underway. Four minutes into the first quarter and the Saints manage to sneak the first goal in. Not long after their first goal the southern Saints kick another one putting a 13-point lead on the Borough girls.

Saints weren’t letting the Borough girls kick a goal and they come through in the last few minutes of the quarter with the third goal of the game leaving the Borough girls with just 1 behind on the scoreboard.

Second quarter starts and Harley kicks off the quarter with a goal for the girls. Eleven minutes in and the Saints add another goal to their score. It doesn’t take long for Holly Bailey to answer the saints as she kicks the second goal for the Borough girls. Saints are continuing the fight as they manage to take the lead just before the half time siren goes.

Saints come out strong again in the third quarter kicking their sixth goal just three minutes in. They come through again with another leaving the Borough girls worried not knowing what’s in store for the rest of the game. Saints well and truly take control now as they kick their eighth goal. To ease the nerves, Bromage makes the most of a 50m penalty and kicks the Boroughs their third goal. At the end of the third quarter the end results were Borough 3.4.22 to Saints 8.4.52.
The fourth quarter starts and both teams don’t score goals, only behinds. Unfortunately, the Saints were too strong and kept us out of the game and we weren’t able to match their playing style this time. Although this is another loss for the girls, they put up a gallant effort and was a good game to watch. The girls need to regroup in preparation for their match against the undefeated Collingwood this coming week at the double header when the VFL men’s team will be playing after them.

Port Melbourne 0.1-1 2.3-15 3.4-22 4.4-28 defeated by
Southern Saints

Another match report.

Port Melbourne go down to Southern Saints
Port Melbourne was handed just its second loss of the season by the Southern Saints on Saturday, going down by 24 points.

Port Melbourne was handed just its second loss of the season by the Southern Saints, going down 4.4 (28) to 8.4 (52) at ETU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The 24-point defeat puts the Borough outside the top two for the first time this season. The win came off the back of three-goal first and third quarters from the Saints, putting the match out of Port’s reach. The Saints solidified their spot in the top six where they still sit a game clear of the seventh-placed Western Bulldogs.
The Saint’s Alice Burke continues to win plenty of the footy while applying pressure around the contest. This round was no different with Burke finishing with 20 disposals and 13 tackles, Tahlia Meyer and Lucy Burke were also good around the contest. Tara Bohana had two goals for the second week, and fellow forwards Kayla Ripari and Madison Capsalis also hit the scoreboard.
Young Borough defender Hannah McLaren was in her side’s best for her efforts in the backline, as was Maddy Brancatisano for her 17 disposals in the midfield. Vic Country Under 19 representative Jaide Anthony held her own in her first VFLW game, finishing with 10 disposals and four marks.

Port Melbourne fell to Collingwood by 42 points in Round 11 of the VFLW on Saturday at ETU Stadium, going down 1.4 (10) to 8.4 (52).

Collingwood kept its unbeaten streak alive with a dominant win in the highly-anticipated clash. The Borough stayed with the Magpies for a half, trailing by only one point at quarter-time and by 14 at half-time. It was after the long break that Collingwood really hit its stride, kicking six goals to Port’s one to remain unbeaten in season 2021.

Pies midfield duo of Jaimee Lambert and Mikala Cann were the best for their side, collecting 26 and 25 disposals respectively. Imogen Barnett found her goalkicking form from earlier this season, putting four past the Port Melbourne defence. Matilda Zander was also lively with two goals and captain Caitlin Bunker was in the best for her work all over the ground.

Sophie Molan led the disposals for Port with 18, closely followed by fellow midfielders Claire Dyett and Kodi Jaques with 16 each. Jade Anthony featured again in her second game of VFLW and Courtney Bromage’s characteristic pressure around the football was on display.

Fantastic fighting win by the Port girls.

Really crucial game as it keeps our double chance alive for finals. Big help that Geelong lost and they have unbeaten Pies next while we have Hawks.

Great third quarter set up the win.

So with two games of the season left here's how its looking:

1st Collingwood 48 pts 270.67% - to play Geelong (H) / Western Bulldogs (H)

2nd Geelong 36 pts 192.09% - to play Collingwood (A) / Hawthorn (A)

3rd Port Melbourne 36 pts 124.56% - to play Hawthorn (A) / North Melbourne (H)

4th Casey Demons 28 pts 151.92% - to play Western Bulldogs (A) / Darebin (H)

5th Essendon 24 pts 136.56% - to play Darebin (A) / Williamstown (A)

6th Western Bulldogs 24 pts 82.10% - to play Casey Demons (H) / Collingwood (A)

7th Southern Saints 20 pts 106.08% - to play North Melbourne (H) / Carlton (A)

8th Carlton 20 pts 72.78% - to play Williamstown (A) / Southern Saints (H)

9th North Melbourne 20 pts 70.63% - to play Southern Saints (A) / Port Melbourne (A)

Hawthorn 16 pts / Williamstown 10pts / Darebin 6 pts

Collingwood has tied up first place and the double chance. The second double chance is a fight between Geelong and Port. Basically we have to win both and have Geelong drop one or win one and have Geelong lose both which is a possibility given they are both away games against Pies and Hawks who have been boosted by a number of AFLW additions who were with them when they took out the VFLW flag in 2018.

The Port win against Casey was crucial on a couple of fronts. Keeps our top two ladder position and a double chance alive but it also ensures that if we don't get the double chance we maintain 3rd or 4th and play a lesser ranked opponent first week of finals.

VFLW: Port Melbourne bounce back against Casey

Port Melbourne VFLW is back on the winners' list after defeating Casey by 14 points on Saturday at Casey Fields.

By Lucy Watkin, AFL Media

185810475_177244314402165_2043176070349240375_n.jpeg

Port Melbourne VFLW got its revenge on Saturday against a Casey Demons side that defeated it just four weeks prior, winning the tightly contested clash at Casey Fields 8.1 (49) to 5.5 (35).

Like that match-up in Round 8, only a handful of points separated the sides at half-time. It was the Borough this time that shot out of the blocks in the third quarter, kicking four-goals-to-one and adding an extra against the wind to ice the game. Port Melbourne held onto third spot on the ladder with the win, keeping the Demons at bay in fourth.

GWS Giant Katherine Smith had a best on ground display for Port, kicking two goals, leading the disposals with 18, and laying 10 tackles. Kodi Jacques was not far behind with 17 touches, a goal and 12 tackles and was supported by Claire Dyett through the middle. Emily Harley had two goals to her name, with Olivia Barton and Maddy Brancatisano also hitting the scoreboard.

189080812_177241164402480_4460499914915558422_n.jpeg

Eliza McNamara led the disposals for the second week in a row for the Demons, finishing with 23. Libby Birch and Eliza West were also among the best in the loss with 18 disposals apiece. Dees spearhead Imogen Milford kicked two goals to go equal first on the VFLW goalkicking leaderboard.
