Vic Metro draftees - how many?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

he is ineligible this year anyway and has a full year of TAC Cup footy to focus on.

Let's see if he continues to improve and really gets hold of the competition next year...

I agree totally. Can't see the point of too many arguments over him on here!

i can see maybe 10-11 vic metro players going this year (thrown horne and a couple of other roughies in the mix) but indeed it is well down on their average, it was only 4 or 5 years ago they had 23. I found that stat stagering. I put this down to the nation wide growth of the game though. Plus good systems being put in place in SA and WA (not sure about qld an nsw, dno how they work it)

come on patty ya cant talk about ur self fair enough you got in the AIS but dont get a to bigger head son ur not gonna be a chris juss thats for sure try and have another good year then people mite think more of you dnt put the horse before the cart alrite patty

Chris varsamakis is one i would look to pick up.

He is a ball player gets in and under and hits very hard . kicks both feet, goal scorer and played well in the big games this year for the knights.

You're right with how you described his football, but its hard to see him getting the chance.

Yes, he was super in the Vic trial games particularly and finished off nicely in the Knight prelim final (probably a major reason that the Knights got back into that game). I like the way he plays but at the end of the day did he do enough to dispel doubts about his fitness and speed?

A few of his teammates fit into the same category, perhaps the boys down there need to spend less of their time bulking up in the gym and more worrying about improving their fitness in other areas.

This was the Vic Metro squad of 30 in this year's championships - how many will get drafted? Is the criticism of their selection policy warranted? Also interested for those who have done a Phantom Draft how many of them you have in there and who is the first one you have listed?

theres my opinion for the little of games ive seen.seen some of these kids more than others so maybe thats why ive marked them lower than most or higher than most!:thumbsu:
pretty tough someone else hva a go...

Dont think there is much doubt Kelly would get rookied - I would have him in a bracket for 40 onwards in the ND. Very smart footballer who can play mid and fwd.

Vasilevski/Batsanis will also be in the mix from 50 onwards for me, although I rate Batsanis myself.

Varsamakis/ODwyer would be a rookie I think.

varsamakis isn't that great, unlikely to even get rookied.
batsanis i rate too, should almost certainly get drafted. o'dwyer would be a handy player if any club is willing to give him a chance as a rookie.
kelly will get drafted, i'm sure of that.

weaver any chance of getting a small profile on these players?..obviously apart from the certanties thatl go in the draft what about the other kids?rookie chances or smokeys?

Which ones?

Varsamakis is a solid, almost chunky centreman who is tough and physical. He is very slow and is an iffy kick at best. I wouldn't have given him any chance at all. Was really in Metro calculations purely to rough up some guys and sit some jockeys on their butts.

Vasilevski is an interesting one. Did very well early in the year, was quite good in the Championships, but faded mightliy by seasons end. Was on the bench as often as on the field by the time of the TAC Finals. Genuine wingman. Can look a bit gangly and scrappy at times. Probably in the mix although he just doesn't have 'it' for me.

Matt O'Dwyer may not have done enough. Played mostly as an elusive 3rd forward. Showed some tricks and class. Is superb by foot. A HFF who needed a hard tag because with 10-12 touches he'd set up 4 goals. I didn't think he'd be in the mix until the finals when he showed that he might be able to play wing and be a genuine midfielder. He could be one of those rookie bargains - you know he will use the ball well and AFL clubs could put him in the back-pocket and feed him the ball Josh Hunt style - use his kicking and vision.

Peter Faulks struggles with catching the ball in many games. He is a handy key defender, and has many good games. But every third game he gets and attack of the dropsies. I can't see AFL clubs missing that, and can't see them calling his name as a result. His kicking is just adequate as well.

My smokie (who won't go close to getting picked) would be Gavin Connelly of Northern. He is one of those centreman who is more likely to get 15 touches than 30. Simply doesn't get enough of the ball to be considered. Also is not athletic enough to play anywhere other than the guts. However I'd say of all the guys in the TAC this season he had the best vision, awareness, decision making and skills under pressure. He was a little maestro in traffic picking out handballs and beautiful little passes to forwards. Real blink and you miss it type stuff.

Luke Clark (Dandenong) is one you'd like to see rookie listed. He is just such a committed defender. In Championships, trials and the Allies game he really was a one man defence at times. Very physical, brave and reads the play well. Throws himself at spoils and marking contests with no fear at all. Unfortunately is probably just a goer without much else to work with.

I am also still firmly on the Mitch Farmer (Calder) bandwaggon. I think he is one of the guys who when you sratch the surface he has the right package of skills, footy smarts and athletism to do better in the AFL than in juniors. He was unlucky in that at Calder some guys had to play centre square because they couldn't play anywhere else (Horne, Williams, Caruso, Gazzo), Long can really only play wing. Meant that Farmer was oblidged to play defence and HBF out of necessity. His adapatability might punish him. Had be been starting RR for Calder I think he would be getting a lot of chatter on this forum.

Also like Sam Monaghan. Again an unobtrusive midfielder. I like how hard he plays. Love that when Sandy were getting thumped he kept playing good footy. He pops up all over the ground. Modern rebounding back-pocket, tricky forward. Runs through the midfield. Unfortunately no screening or camp invite. I really think he is one of those guys that is a "go-to" guy for coaches (both Metro and Sandy). You got a problem - Monaghan is your Mr Fixit. Tag, snare a goal, stem an avalanche of goals that sort of anonymous utility.

Your summary of Mitch Farmer is pretty accurate and AFL clubs are aware of his strengths. His weaknesses may hurt him. He needs to become more effective with his disposal, especially left foot. He will be first rover at the Cannons next year and be given every opportunity to shine. His GF on Robert Gray was very good. I see him being a Matt White type at AFL level. The underage Cannon who has created a lot of interest is Arrowsmith. 188 cm athlete who can run and outstanding disposal. If you can recall his final against Geelong was very noticable. Was disappointing in GF but tested extremely well at screening day- Essendon, Geelong, Adelaide and West Coast all interested.

I actually overheard some scouts talking about him midyear and was a little suprised but watched him closely thereafter. As you suggest very much what the modern player is all about. Clubs look past performance at the athlete and the skills and he probably qualifies. Was forced to play CHF which is not his position but actually did quite well.

Wouldn't be shocked to see him taken, but for mine he simply hasn't done enough yet. Still on the 'watch' list not the 'draft' list. Next year for mine.

i can c alot of victorians taken in the rookie draft or late pick!....not alot of out and out stars but theres q few that have qualities to make it at AFL!i think there will be alot of genuinely good footballers in the rookie draft from victoria!

I'll be very surprised if dean kelly doesn't end up at freo late in the draft if someone else hasnt already taken him. Spent last summer with his brother (heath black) and all his teammates and was there at the perth races with them all when the incident with the police occured
