This question was posed in The Age I think: if Pendles misses a game next year (god forbid), who would captain the team?

With the departures of senior leaders it becomes a tough question... Beams? Keeffe? Sidebottom? Goldsack? We have Young in the leadership group but he is in and out of the 22 lately. I know Cloke always wanted to be in the leadership group but I can't imagine him captaining the team. Guys like Tom Langdon and Taylor Adams have leadership quality and, in Tom's case, captaincy experience, but they have only been at the club one year...

Who do you think?

Should be Beams or Sidebottom really. Might be a carrot to keep Beams at the Pies? I don't think there anyone else in the current squad that is more suited to the role (from the outside looking in) at this stage.

In 2012 when Pendles went down Beams really led from the front, I know Maxwell was our captain at that time and he was being his usual self but I feel that Beams showed leadership beyond his years and was far and away our most inspirational and influential leader in the big moments. If Pendles went down again(*knocking on wood*) I think he could be that man again.

Captain; Pendlebury
Vice Captain; Sidebottom

Leadership group;

Cloke, Reid, Beams, Elliott, Brown (1-2 "kids")

Pendles and Sidebottom are the 2 clear on field leaders, but it is time to give some of the kids some responsibility too. Witts, Grundy or Williams could also be in the leadership group I reckon.

Darcy Moore will be in the leadership group as soon as he becomes a regular senior player, has captained just about every side he's played in the last few years.

Sidebottom is not an on field leader. He might end up in the leadership group because we have traded / delisted everyone else, but he isn't a natural leader, and hasn't really led all that much to date from what I can see.

In fact the only real act of leadership I have seen from him (and it was outstanding) was when he pushed Grundy away from remonstrating against GC.

12 months ago I probably would have agreed with you, Sidey was that type of player who played well for a period of the season yet went missing when we needed him most.

But this year he was our second best player I thought, and while our best player was miles ahead (Pendles of course) Sidey's second half of the year, when the side was struggling, was brilliant, and he did show leadership in several games.

Internally at the club they've always held high hopes he would develop into a leadership role and as part of the leadership group this year he has I reckon.

I rate him as the second best leader/potential captain at the club now.

Beams VC. I'm not sure what the current leadership structure is, but I'd include Sidebottom, Reid and Elliott in the extended group. Cloke has his own shit to sort out without worrying about extra resposibilities. Is Toovey a possibility? Certainly our list of obvious leaders is shrinking by the minute

Beams is the obvious choice. Only problem is that Beams doesn't seem to want the position. Takes guts to make that decision, but just goes to show why he is the best man for the job.

Just because Beams realised his limitations at the time, doesn't mean he hasn't acquired the maturity to take on the position now.

I wouldn't be writing Beams off because he wasn't into taking a leadership position earlier in his career.

I've had the priveledge of working with leaders who took on the role late in their career. My experience is that they have been the best leaders to bring out the best of my abilities.

We merge the two VC's into one being. And we shall call him, Sidebeams. Kinda like the footy version of Brundlefly.
