Melbourne Victory's new Brazilian import, Alessandro.

Melbourne Victory today announced that it had completed the signing of its 20 man roster for the commencement of season two of the Hyundai A-League. Alessandro, from Brazilian club Internacional RS and Roddy Vargas, from Victorian Premier League side Green Gully, were announced today as the final two signings for the ambitious Hyundai A-League club.

The club will also use the official unveiling of the players on Thursday to announce a significant new sponsorship deal.

Alessandro, a 23 year old attacking left back, will link up with fellow Brazilians Fred and Claudinho in the most cosmopolitan squad ever assembled in Australian domestic football history. Victory also boasts former Belgian international, Geoffrey Claeys, Scottish midfielder Grant Brebner and Argentinian-born Adrian Caceras.

The third of Victory’s Brazilian trio, Alessandro Viana Da Silva has stepped straight out of the Brazilian Serie A, the highest division in the country, where his played for Internacional RS. His previous clubs include Novo Hamburgo, ADAP, Angra dos Reis and America.

Former Melbourne Knights captain, Roddy Vargas, has been rewarded for his consistency in the Victorian Premier League with Green Gully, and gains a highly sought after place on one of the country’s most impressive squad lists.

Vargas was overjoyed with the offer to join the Hyundai A-League, the country’s
premier football competition.

“As a player, you always want to push yourself and play at the highest level possible,” Vargas said.

“It’s fantastic that in amongst all Victory’s international signings there’s still the opportunity for local players to make their mark in the Hyundai A-League.

“I’m sure it’s on the minds of all the players in the State leagues, that one day they might get a call up to play in the Hyundai A-League. I’m just glad it’s me who got the call.”

Club CEO, Geoff Miles, believes the club now has a much better platform from which to launch an assault on this year’s championship.

“We’ve said consistently throughout our short history that we are trying to build a club for the long term,” Miles said. “We began with modest expectations in the club’s inaugural season, but it’s time to ramp that up now.

“Through our recruiting efforts we are confident that we have taken the necessary steps to ensure we give ourselves the chance to have a real crack at the Hyundai A-League title this season.”

“As a club we took the initiative in the off-season to send our coach (Ernie Merrick) to Brazil to build relationships and look at a number of players. We expected to deliver one Brazilian player, and having signed three quality players, it has been a highly worthwhile exercise,” Miles said.

The pair is expected to join Melbourne on Thursday at Olympic Park for the team’s final training session before their first Pre-Season Cup match against Adelaide in Launceston on Sunday.

This will be the first time Melbourne Victory’s full squad, including Qantas Socceroo Archie Thompson, will be on display, and will coincide with the announcement of a new sponsor for the club.

“The support for Melbourne Victory from the corporate sector has always been good, but we’ve seen a real surge in interest since the World Cup,” Miles said.

Melbourne Victory has added a third Brazilian to its A-League roster, signing left-sided defender Alessandro.

Alessandro, 23, is an attacking left-back who fills a void Victory coach Ernie Merrick has been looking to plug throughout the off-season.

He will link up with fellow Brazilians Fred and Claudinho in the Victory squad.

The strikers signed for the Melbourne club in May.

The Victory said Alessandro had been playing in Brazil's first division for Internacional RS, and played for several other Brazilian clubs, including ADAP and Angra dos Reis.

Melbourne has completed its 20-man squad after also adding former NSL player Roddy Vargas on Tuesday.

Vargas, who played several seasons with the Melbourne Knights, joins the Victory after playing in the Victorian Premier League for Green Gully.

Both players are expected to join their new teammates in the Victory's training session on Thursday ahead of its opening A-League pre-season match against Adelaide United in Launceston on Sunday.

Left back was definitely a position that needed sorting, although I'm naturally a it suspicious about the defensive merits of Brazilian full-backs.

Roddy Vargas is purely a squad depth signing.

Good to see someone at Victory could count to 20 this season.

One has to wonder why Merrick didn't do this a year ago and actually thought a team made up of VPL kids, plodders and Archie Thompson would remotely challenge for honours.

Last season? What last season? I don't remember any season.

If we don't make top 4 with that squad, Merrick should be deported.

I agree.

I think Victory will win the thing this year, actually. The players you lot have bought are excellent acquisitions for this league.

It's good to see more Brazilians being brought over. That's five in the league now I think.

Claudinho and Fred seem to be doing well in practice games which is a good sign. I still have a few doubts about midfield, hopefully Brebner will give us a bit more steel and attacking intent. Goalkeeper is another weakness, I feel. I really can't wait for this season, as we've got more to prove than any other club after last season's capitulation. And some other clubs seem to have had their fair share of off-season turmoil, while we've been going pretty smoothly.

Hard to believe that pre-season starts Sunday. Bring it on.

Its good for the league but at the same time all these foriegners will be taking the spots of aussie players who could be playing so i think there really needs to be some sort of a foriegn player limit and unless they change the rules of the asian champions league next year we will have to have a one.

Sorry for the double post but will the preseason cup be on tv or radio, i would love to go down to tassie as im really excited about this season however i cant afford to go ecspecially for a preseason game.

Won't be on TV judging by last season, maybe on radio but I'm not sure. Not holding my breath.

The core of any team in this league will be Australian, even the NZ Knights have a core team of Australians. But we do need to have two or three foreign players on every team to bring that final level of quality up, like what we had with Shengqing Qu.

I think LifeFM will stream it online. They did that for all our away games last year; just expect to be overran with AUFC bias.

My understanding is Vargas is a centre back.
Being told he is good but I don't understand the merit signing another central defender when the squad has Byrne, Lejger, Claeys, Pirokowski(?). With Muscat's lacks of pace these days I also believe its one of the only positions he won't be exposed as much.

Wow, these last two signings seem to have come out of the blue.

It's hard to have an opinion on how we'll go until we see the new players in action but the club seem to have responded well to the disappointment of last season by being proactive with their signings.

All of the players except Muscat may be central defenders but some of them will be expected to play as full backs throughout the season so we could do with the depth. If Muscat plays in the midfield as expected we'll probably see the likes of Byrnes and Piorkowski spend some time at left and right back. The signing of Alessandro does address one of our weaknesses but again I can't hail the decision before any of us have seen him play.

I'm really looking forward to next season now.

The match may be covered on SEN. If it was played on a Saturday it would clash with their VFL coverage so there's no problem there. If not LifeFM it is.

I agree with everyone that's posted in this thread, we are going to win it all this season.
IMO The coach is the weakest link.
If he insists the Gary Cole's lovechild Allssop plays every week not matter how badly he is playing then we no chance.
I was complaining that Viduka is a striker that doesn't score, whats Allssop then?

Moving Muscat to midfield, in I assume a defensive role which I thoiught was taken by the young greek background player(name escapes me now).

Statistically Pantelidis was amongst the best in the league for tackles and you can't question his committment but I'm not convinced that he's in our best team.

The fact that Ferrantes strike against the Mariners late in the season was our first and only goal from a midfielder speaks volumes for how ineffectual the midfield was.

Sarkies rapid promotion to the national team should ensure that he is given far more game time in the middle of the park and the arrival of Caceres, Fred and Claudinho gives us more attacking options than before.

I think Allsopp will be in for a big season. He got into plenty of good positions last season but for whatever reason just couldn't finish. This seems to have change throughout the preseason, he's scored plenty, thanks to Fred and Claudinho. Add Archie into that (didn't think he'd be here tbh) and we have probably the most potent attack in the league.
