Sounds like they were prepared and ready. Handled swiftly I'd say.

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/afl/voss-returns-as-lion-king/2008/09/02/1220121200527.html

If conspiracy theorists suspected something odd about the swiftness of the appointment, they were right. Far from a making a hasty decision, Kelly revealed Voss had already been rubber-stamped for the job after a "succession plan" for Matthews began in March.

At the instigation of Matthews, Voss was interviewed by the board on a number of occasions during the year, with the extended and secretive courtship resulting in a unanimous approval of the 33-year-old's credentials.

But when Matthews couldn't accurately pin down a date for his departure, Voss looked elsewhere, with his endeavours resulting in a two-year assistant coaching appointment at West Coast, due to begin in November.
When Matthews informed Kelly on Sunday afternoon he was ready to walk away, just an hour later a text message was sent to Voss. The wheels were set in motion.

"We were able to move swiftly with Michael due to the fact that Leigh came to me earlier in the year and put to me a succession planning concept involving Michael, the question being does the board of the Brisbane Lions want Michael Voss to follow Leigh Matthews as its senior coach," Kelly said.

"A series of meetings and discussions took place involving Leigh, Michael, myself and the board. The board answered `yes' to that question."

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Voss the player. I was a massive fan of the way he did it, and he really could do it all. Was a total gun.

Anyone else think his credentials off the field are thoroughly unknown? He's never overly impressed me on TV, and he hasn't coached a damn thing. Sure, it is all romantic and fits nicely having Matthews hand off to Voss... but can Voss actually coach? Can he teach?

Will be interesting to see.

Stupid move to be honest. Why not utilise a John Longmire?

Voss needed at least two years as an apprentice.

Looks like the lions are heading back to the dark days of the bears and Knights, making rash decisions due to the popularity of a person.

THree years for Voss at brisbane. Seems pretty quick. What do people think about how fast it was handled?

There was a succession plan in place, but my only query would be Voss' lack of experience in the coaching area. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

It wasn't planned because he'd already done a deal with West Coast. He's had a lot of time to decide and they would have offered it to him on a platter.

He might be crap, he might not be. He might be an absolute prodigy. We don't know so I guess it's a bit difficult to say whether it's been a bad move or not.

Bloke on the radio summed him up for me - smug. He's used to the best of everything. Not saying he had an armchair ride to 3 flags that was hard work no doubt, he just seems to have cruised through life cherry-picking ever since he retired. What's he going to do when he runs up against a Nathan Ablett or Brendan Fevola or even that flawed gem Jared Brennan. What he can do with a player who needs real coaching will be interesting to see.

I agree with all of this. Doesn't really strike me as "match day sharp" to be honest

Was suprised that they picked him up with such little experience, but as you all said, well have to wait and see how it goes.

He's been helping coach/teach/develop the best teenage talent in the land for about 2 years now at the AIS.

He wouldn't be lacking anything in the skills, strategies, development and training/work rate departments and is a natural leader who the players would respect and put their bodies on the line for.

The only thing he'd have to learn is how to manage all the coaching staff and their roles and responsibilities and his time with the huge workload involved in being a senior coach. It will no doubt take a season or two for him to get comfortable with it, but he's the sort of person that will rise to the challenge and show how truly capable he is :thumbsu:

It was planned before he'd done the deal with WC, and more significanly, before Lethal retired a year before his contract was up. The plan was always for 'when Lethal retires'. When Vossy signed on with WC for 2 years it was envisaged that Lethal would still be the senior coach of Brisbane for at least another year (Lethal only decided to retire on Saturday afternoon).

I've been lucky enough to see a bit of Vossy through my work in the sports science dept at the AIS and I must say he is very impressive. Well organised, highly respected and seems to be tactically sound. Obviously we are not talking senior AFL level coaching here but the AFL would probably not be too keen to put their future stars in the hands of a dud.

I think Brisbane needed him. When you look at how competitive that market is he was the only bloke to do it. During their successful years they had rugby league and union supporters jump on board because the club was flying. Vossy was a three time premiership captain and an icon. As the success started to fall away, so to did the supporters converted from other sports. Suddenly with 2 league teams, a union team and a soccer team the supporter base was under threat. Now with a second AFL club coming in they needed someone/something to drag people back and keep them. Vossy is respected by one and all for what he did with that club - it certainly wasn't just about his coaching ability. He was never going to be at West Coast for more than a year.

Fair point about the Lions needing him. I think too with the competition coming from a new QLD team, perhaps the Lions wanted one of their favourite sons as coach to bring in members. New teams in NSW and QLD could be testing times for teh two clubs up there, no doubt they'd be getting a bit of the old nerves

Well I am glad he isn't coaching the Blues. Have you heard them talk? To be a good coach you need good communication skills, will be interesting how he goes at the Lions. Not every great player becomes a great coach, expection is Ratts and Matthews.

Can't say I've been overly impressed with his commentary. He does have some experience working at the AIS - but how does that compare with the pressures of coaching AFL football? Personally, I think he'd have been much wiser to have done an apprenticeship before hand, but that's just me. He is taking a risk - going into the job inexperienced, if he does **** it up can't see to many clubs wanting to take a punt on him as coach in the future.

One thing the Lions would need is a very strong coaching panel around him. While Voss might want to build his own team from ground up, if they can find a former AFL coach or long term assistant coach to be their "manager of football", it'd make the road a fair bit smoother.

Personally, I believe Buckley is much better equipped to handle coaching without an apprenticeship than Voss.
