Whilst I reckon on the whole, that the above leaderboard is a pretty fair reflection of who's done what so far this season, there is one glaring "error" in our voting. Maybe it's probably more due to the voting system itself than any oversight on behalf of us the voters, but it always seems to happen in the Brownlow too, which is far more flawed.

Chris Newman - 2 votes

That's less than Mark Chaffey, Brent Hartigan, Tom Roach, Andrew Kellaway, Ty Zantuck, Chris Hyde, Jay Schulz, Tim Fleming, David Rodan, Kayne Pettifer and almost SIX TIMES less than Greg Tivendale, all of whom, I think, Have had FAR inferior seasons than Chris.

He has also had nearly NINE TIMES less votes than Wayne Campbell.

Now, Chris Newman is certainly no champion. He probably shouldn't be in our top 5 or 6 players this season, and would have struggled to be considered our B.O.G. in any individual game. But he has been, however, as honest as the day is long, super consistent, super persistent, has done some really good jobs on some excellent opposition, and has a "Clanger" rate far less than, and a "Contested Possession" rate far better than a vast proprtion of those above him in the voting.

Equal 17th simply doesn't do him justice in my opinion. He'd be one of the few Tiger players that can finish in 4 weeks fairly satisfied with his individual performance in 2004.

Newman is probably overlooked because of the type of role he is required to play for the team - always the tagger and rarely allowed the freedom to attack in his own right.

Oddly enough, last year when he was playing as a small defender, he was given more opportunity to run and attack.

Maybe next year will see him with a chance to play a more influential role?
