Just want to acknowledge the good sportsmanship of Essendon supporters that posted on the Geelong board, hope you turn it back next week!

One thing that stood out to me was that Pears has to get back in the team. Hooker and Carlisle are too similar so we don't have any sort of opportunity to make a genuine switch when it needs to be made a la Tippett last year.
The opportunity was there to give Carlisle a go on Hawkins, the coaching panel just decided not to take it.

Good night for bad umpiring because it didn't affect the result but some of that umpiring was bewildering. It seems that we weren't the only ones who had an off night in terms of decision making.

Hurley down back is a viable option, especially if Gumbleton continues to work his way back into AFL world.

I don't think this is a viable option at all, how many players on our list have kicked 5 or more in consecutive games. One. Michael Hurley. As much as we need a full back we need a power forward more.

Carlisle would have been monstered.
At the start of the year I would've thought the same but he held his own against Clark who was in really good form. Yes, they're different types of players but still I don't think we had anything to lose by giving Carlisle a go.

I agree with this.

I would love to see them try to explain the push in the back paid at the start of the game and then compared it to the non push in the back when it was holding the ball against Hardingham.

Luckily we got one back when Davey ran down a Geelong player by tackling them in the back.

A part of the game that really stood out to me, whilst I was there, was the clearances. We just couldn't give our forwards many opportunities.

Geelong: 41 clearances, 65 inside 50s
Essendon: 27 clearances, 41 inside 50s

Hocking and/or Lonergan would've been helpful tonight.

At the ground it looked like he was running with Selwood for large portions and trumped him. Thought he was one of our best players tonight.

Strange the criticism thrown at Heppell - Thought in the first half of the year played his best footy across half back - Has shown positive signs in the midfield in the last 3 weeks - VERY positive signs.

Rated him our 6th best player tonight.

But what difference would it have made? One tall defender who likes to spoil from behind rather than wrestle or the other. Pears would have engaged Hawkins which is something different. He has to come in next week, and not at Hooker's expense.

Yes, because nothing else like important cogs missing all over the ground, or our attack, or our composure, or the efforts of the whole 22, ec; matters in any sense...

Yes.

pls.

And St Kilda were not struggling.

I said two big thrashings back to back at Etihad (Geel & Stk) in between was poor 3 qtrs against struggling Port.
Yes we're missing cogs, but Cats had quite a few no name youngsters. The bigger concern is teams seem to have us figured out. Not the end of the world but quite concerning nonetheless.

At Carlisles? Don't think you can have Pears, Hooker, Carlisle in the same backline.

Carlisle would not have given Hawkins as much space as Hooker did. I also think Carlisle is much better at timing his jump and has better reach than Hooker.

Everyone who is calling for the switch to be made, you realise for the first 115 minutes of the game Hawkins only had three goals? Perhaps the box were happy with Hooker breaking even with Hawkins whilst we were getting thrashed? Why change something that was working?

Ultimately we have too many good players injured - Hurley/Zaharakis/Ryder/Hibberd/Winderlich/Hocking - Take out 6 best 22 players and nearly every team will struggle.

We have to improve our kicking out of defence - Too often we created a turnover in the middle.

I thought we got too many players sucked into the contest in the midfield - Geelong with their strong bodies were able to shovel the ball out to a free player.

I expect that Dell'OLio and Melksham to be dropped - Hille could be under pressure if they elect to play Gumby as a second ruck.

Not sure 3 goals and 2 goal assists is really breaking even. But I can see your point.

The coaches won't let their baby get dropped. Has gone backwards substantially this season, unfortunately.

Nope. Roughead/Hale, Gunston, Schoenmakers, Fletcher on Breust.

Crameri kicked 9 against GCS and Carlton...yeah, I'd say he's more than capable

Hey guys first post, maybe 3rd. Average game tonight, half expected it from cats as after last week they had something to prove. Big game for both sides. We do have a few key players out but i think our basic skills and turnovers in the last few games have really let us down across the board.

I think we need to give gumby games as long as he's fit and sad to say but hille didnt look too interested tonight. We lack consistancy in the later half of the year, we never know which essendon will turn up. Is it just me but i feel like a long time ago when we were 8-2. Definately hard run coming up but in saying that most teams are in the same vote fighting for top 8, should be interesting to see how the rest of the season pans out.

It hurts to see us give away our chance to seal a top 4 posi but thats how we roll. I think we're going ok at the moment and with a few players coming back later will make a difference. As long as we do better than last year we're heading in the right direction. Still a few games to go yet.

If I see another games where Myers plays 3/4 of the match in the back half I'll lose it....he plays in the middle we win, he plays in defence we get no clearances.

Out: Hille (don't care who, the lug couldn't catch a mark all night long), Monfries (really why are we playing players half fit), Melksham
In: Pears, Kav, and Lonergan

Also no coincidence that Ryder, Bellchambers and Hurley were playing. Crameri has only ever really got off the chain when he has been the third tall. Only game he has scored heavily against a real quality key defender was when he kicked 4 first half goals on Merrett. Love the bloke but he's not the key forward we're crying out for.

  • MELKSHAM heck OFF
  • HILLE GET FARKD
  • JETTA AND DAVEY AS OUR SMALL FORWARDS - DELL OLIO heck OFF

I actually lol'd. :p

Here are my random thoughts after tonight:

* Would have been nice to have had Lonergan out there tonight.
* Hooker will never be the #1 defender in any premiership team. We putting too much responsibility on his shoulders, and he's not good enough. Still a good defender, and I can't see him going anywhere... but he needs help.
* Hurley, however, certainly could be. If Gumby really does come good (we MUST keep playing him) and with Daniher perhaps looking like a ready-made full forward at some point in the next few years, I think it's almost a no-brainer that we move Hurley to the back line again at some point... for good. (won't be this year though) Back to the position we drafted him at #5 to play at.
* We still need to learn how to kick to a lead.
* Hille won't play ever again while we have Ryder and Belly available, and he won't be playing next year.
* Not sure about Dell yet. Does some good things, but Reimers, Davey and Jetta are way above him in the pecking order.
* Melksham is absolutely useless. Has been his entire career. Back to Bendigo.
* We missed Hocking tonight. And Zaka.

Still very confident about the future.

But the rest of this year (until we get players back) will be a bit of a balancing act... the experience gained by playing finals can not be underestimated, but we also need to think about next year as well.
