We are coming to the pointy end of the season and not much has been made of the Colts competition so I thought I would mention it.

Had two fantastic semi finals on the weekend, with Perth overcoming a gallant Swan Districts by 10 points 9.9.63 to 8.5.53.

Joel Houghton kicked four for Perth, whilst Luke Smith (29), Jamie Koric (22) and Cameron Kickett (20) were among the better players.

Perth 9.9.63 def
Swan Districts 8.5.53

Goals Perth: Houghton 4, Moore 2, Leeson, Stuart, Rogers 1
Swans: Cormack 2, McKinley, Daly, Pullman, Pezzali, Mortin, Garlett 1

Best Perth: Smith, Kickett, Houghton, Koric, Stuart, Warner
Swans: B.Mckinley, A.Mckinley, Mortin, Garlett

In the other game Claremont took on Peel Thunder in an enthrulling battle at Fremantle oval. The lead changed several times during the game, but claremont were able to hang on in the last quarter to win 12.6.78 to 9.12.66. Claremonts forwards looked dangerous all night, with McCallister kicking 4, Fyfe 3 and Broome 2.

Harley Bennell was best for Peel, although conceded 3 goals to Fyfe, whilst Aaron Black, Dean Beswick, Brennan Gillam and Devin McFarlane all tried hard for the losers.

Key players Aaron Payrits and Mitch Brown were both reported for the thunder and will come across the match review panel during the week.

Claremont 12.6.78 def
Peel Thunder 9.12.66

Goals Claremont: McCallister 4, Fyfe 3, Broome 2, Neates Crispin, Weedon 1 Peel: Black 2, O'Driscoll 2, McFarlane 2, Payrits, Mason, Luff 1.

Best Claremont: Davies, Colyer, McCallister, Broome, Yu, Dann
Peel: Bennell, Black, McFarlane, Beswick, Gillam

This week, Peel will play Perth under lights at Medibank Stadium to decide who will go through and play Claremont the following week.

I thought Colyer's speed was too much for peel and their backline run off peel forwards too easy. Bennell was good but played too much for himself. Butcher was peels only clearence player whilst having a tag, i think he's a real prospect. Should be a good game this saturday

playing to get drafted and not the team it seems. Should go late in the national or picked up as a rookie anyway. Going for Peel in the colts as i have a mate in there, otherwise it looks like Souths in the resys and league. Quinella:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Bennell can not be picked up this year. will go pretty high next year!!
I think the statement he was playing for himself is incorrect!!

whos ya mate that plays for peel?

I agree that Souths will win both league and ressies, With farmer and Bell to return to the league, that side would be near on impossible to beat!!

heard this bloke has likened the switch to defence this season after realising he wasnt to good in front of the big sticks. he just looked lost when he played in the forward line

Colts game is on at 5:30, I believe, again tomorrow. Peel will be cursing their luck, because these parents travel from as far as Donnybrook and it's a long, late trip home!

Might have to stay back and have a watch and see how my "mate" goes!!

Watched a pretty good game of colts with a great group of parents (dads) of Peel players in the outer! Made me forget my sorrows of earlier in the afternoon as we were cheering and banging the signage in the outer. You got to be kids again sometimes, don't you? :D

Anyways, good crop of players that Peel have and will be interesting next Saturday night against Claremont.

Players that impressed were Wilson, Luff, Oliver, Bennell (what a beauty!), Pohlenz-Saw, Butcher to name a few from Peel and Elari, McLaughlin, Florio?, Houghton from Perth. :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Hoping to go and watch all 3 games and i will be going for peel in the colts followed by watching the best WAFL take home 2 premerships

Will have to leave very early to get there in time for the colts game.
Is it still being run in the morning or did the draft selectors get their own way and is the match on saturday night now?

Those guys were nuts, you'd swear it was a league game. Gotta celebrate something when you're a Peel fan I guess ;)

Sorry but to say Houghton was one of Perth's best is a pretty ordinary call. Was completly outplayed by Chris Luff, who made the tall lanky forward look pretty stupid at times. Houghton dropped a number of easy chest marks and in the end was dragged for poor discipline. Did nothing to enhance his prospects of getting drafted!!

They're a great bunch of dads DC, come and join us at the GF and I'm sure they'll show both of us how to have some fun!!:D

Luff was fantastic, agree with that. Houghton did at least keep trying though, in a team pretty well outplayed after quarter time. In all honesty, after Elari and McLaughlin I was hard pressed coming up with Perth players, perhaps you can tell me who you thought were their better players?:thumbsu:

They were very entertaining and animated for a colts game thats for sure. I had to stifle a laugh on a couple of occaisons. Wouldn't have looked good for someone on the Perth side if I did.

Sadly wont be at the grand final. Booked a trip to the Kal Cup earlier in the year and kinda wish I wasn't going now, it coincides with so many things.

Yer your right besides those two it was pretty hard to pick the next best for Perth. I thought Leeson looked dangerous up forward and Florio was ok.

Players like Kickett, Smith, Busher and Houghton really didnt stand up when it counted unlike, Beswick, Butcher and Bennell for Peel.

This weeks game should be a cracker, with both sides very evenly matched. They have play 4 times already this year with it being 2 apiece.

CLAREMONT claimed the WAFL Colts premiership at Subiaco Oval tonight, September 19, after defeating Peel Thunder 20.12 (132) to 9.11 (65) in an entertaining contest under lights.

About 2500 people attended the first ever 'Celebration of Youth' Grand Final at Subaico Oval, which saw Belt Up Cup and District All-Star games played as curtain-raisers to the Colts Grand Final.

Held for the first time on the day prior to the league grand final, the Colts Grand Final saw both sides fight out a tight opening term, with Peel leading by eight points at quarter time and scores remaining close until the half time break when Peel maintained their eight-point advantage.
But the Tigers pounced in the third term, kicking seven goals to one to build a handy 28-point lead heading into the final quarter. With victory in sight, the Tigers pushed ahead, booting another seven goals to one to take out the flag in convincing style.

Claremont's Lewis Broome was awarded the Mel Whinnen Medal as best on ground.

SCOREBOARD

Claremont 4.2 6.5 13.8 20.12 (132)

Peel Thunder 5.4 7.7 8.10 9.11 (65)

A scintillating second half by Claremont, led by Neates out of the middle and Broome and Fyfe down forward. Claremont had good players across all lines, especially in the second half, but in the first most people thought Claremont were just hanging on. Except yours truly and another 17yo at the game, who thought the Tiges would run over the top of Peel.

Peel's work rate and appetite for the contest really dropped off in the second half when Matthew Davies, captain and no. 14, really raised the niggle level to extreme. I love players like that, particularly captains, played a great captain's match, I thought, which meant he wasn't BOG, just did all those team things really well and led the way in them. No. 13 wasn't far behind in the niggle stakes for Claremont and no 13 from Peel thought he'd make it a fighting pair.:D

All in all a very enjoyable game with some very skillful players on display.

Well done to both teams for getting to the GF and the Monts for triumphing!
