Encouraging numbers up there for Liam Hickmott. Anyone seen him play?

He doesn't have the balance and skills of younger brother Wil but is a smart, hard working mid/defensive player and clearly can rack up big stats. He has improved immensely since 16's dev squad - will improve further no doubt - and is tracking towards Subi league football in the future. From there who knows? A mature age late developing draft chance?

Do you think Wil will end up with us F/S?

Good lists but I feel a few of the best country boys either aren’t playing or playing a few games and then going back home. I’ll use the Geraldton boys as an example from East Freo, stats are miss leading because it’s hard to come down on the Saturday of the game or the night before after not training with the team and then not playing a position you’re use to (no excuse but often the Geraldton boys don’t play their main position which is where they shine).

I’ve been hearing Jai Jackson’s name since he was twelve years old, playing under 16s at that age. Currently now playing league and regularly getting in the best players, plays midfield. Not exceptional in anything but very good at everything. Tall
Midfielder that will accumulate, Geraldtons best prospect since Jack Martin but he is a party boy, so it’s up to him to see where he goes.

Dylan Curley is the second fastest kid in Geraldton for his age, and is the second highest jumper (the first is a national champ), but he is a ruckman, so his athletic ability is out of this world. Got beat on field in the league grand final last year as a 16 year old (Jaegar Omera the only other 16 year old to do it, though jack could’ve won it that game as well). Not the hardest worker but I can definitely see Dylan being a high pick in the draft based on his athletic ability. His skills are good as well, can kick both feet and is a great tackler, endurance the only thing but hey Liam Ryan got a 10 in the beep test and is playing for the greatest team ever so who knows.

Bit of useless information but just my thoughts on he Gero lads. Chris Scott also a name to look out for. Got best on ground in the WAFL colts grand final last year and worked out with Geelong as possibly getting picked, can see him getting picked this year.

Thanks for the great info mate.

Yes, it's tough for the kids who live in the remote parts of WA - Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Geraldton, Dampier, Broome and many other towns.

I can't think of a solution because WA is such a big state.

I guess the ones who really think they are a chance of getting drafted or becoming WAFL league footballers will relocate to the city in their final year of colts but it's a big commitment.

Deadset mate. Not much can be done and everyone who thinks they have a chance will most likely eventually make their way to Perth. For places like Halls Creek (go SPS) and Dampier, there is so much talent in some individuals but the adjustment to Perth is just real hectic, especially for a lot of indigenous boys who need family around to help them get comfortable. I reckon if you picked a best 22 of regional players in WA vs the best off the WAFL colts, if fitness didn’t play a part, the regional side could come out on top.

Anyways heading to East Freo vs Claremont this weekend so I’ll let ya know what some of the colts did. Cheers for the info anyways.

The talent scouts would have their eyes open. Hasnt stopped the midwest from being heavily drafted .

After many years, no doubt the scouts would be fimiliar with the challanges of country kids and have a different set of criteria for selection.

Needless to say, I'm sure any country kid hopeful of being drafted would have external influences outside of the family encouring them to move into the City. Brayden Ainsworth is a good example.

Any idea how many of the kids you've listed are at boarding school in Perth? e.g is Jarrod Cameron at Aquinas, same route as Charlie?

Jarrod got a good write up last week in The West the 18s:
https://thewest.com.au/sport/afl-dr...s-under-18-win-over-vic-country-ng-b88882433z

Jarrod Cameron (WA)
Cameron looked a spitting image of brother Charlie when he benefited from a turnover in the centre square and took off towards goal. Two bounces later, he had sprinted to 40m and driven a low right-foot drop punt through the middle. It was Cameron’s second goal and he celebrated in style. The lightning-quick small forward had three by half-time in a scintillating display. The first was a long-range set shot from a free kick, the third another on the run with an opponent hot on his heels. He finished with five to his name. West Coast fans should be excited – Cameron is in the Eagles’ Next Generation Academy, meaning the club can match any bid for him in this year’s draft.

This was mentioned on sport fm radio not so long ago.

I don't know the exact number but it is a lot less than Victoria.

In WA, we only have 7 PSA schools - Aquinas, Guildford, Hale, Wesley, Christchurch, Scotch and Trinity. Three of those are in the Claremont zone - not withstanding boarders from out of zone country areas and kids who get a scholarship.

I could go on for hours about the WAFL zones - the quirks, but I won't. Having said that, it is one of the interesting things about the WAFL zones. The demographics.

Having lived in Melbourne briefly, I can say that the two cities are chalk and cheese. Perth has a massive gulf between the Dalkeith and the Mirrabooka.
