WAFL Round 14

It's a bad omen that Smith is causing problems, making enemies and being antagonistic to authority already. And he is not even getting a regular game in the WAFL seniors yet. Most 17 year olds would be scared of the coach and would do what they were told.
That's unfair. You're using speculation to justify theory, hardly heady stuff.

Who knows? You may end up right about Smith, but to say that he is causing trouble and making enemies is an unwarranted accusation without proof.

Can you name one other occasion where a young eagles player, let alone a first year rookie, had to be moved between WAFL clubs mid season due to a personality conflict with a senior WAFL coach?

It's Jarman. It's not like it's an ordinary coach.

Ash Smith was pretty impressive when he was on the ground, he actually had a short run late in the second quarter but by my rough estimation probably had just under 2 full quarters on the ground.

Burnt off a few opponents and set up some good play from the half back flank, certainly one of the cleaner Perth players when he was on.

Not sure about the conflict between the coach and Smith, but I do know a few Perth boys who cannot stand Jarmans approach, apparently he plays favourites and those who are on the inner sanctum can do no wrong.

Marcus Drum is also suffering at the hands of Jarman.

Although Marcus Drum seems to have suffered under every coach - perhaps in his case, he just isnt good enough.

Although Marcus Drum seems to have suffered under every coach - perhaps in his case, he just isnt good enough.

You could look at it that way. But from my viewing Drum has been thrown around far too much and hasnt been able to settle, in patches he has been thrown in the ruck.

Im of the opinion that Marcus Drum is good enough, he has shown some good signs up forward for the Dockers, but is being hurt by Jarmans coaching, or lack there of.

His addresses at the quarter breaks were cringeworthy. With a howling breeze blowing across the ground, he told his players to kick down the dead side of the ground, because Souths would not be prepared.

What happened?

Souths kick 9 for the quarter and the game is over at half time.

Ash Smith has turned in some pretty low-effort games for Perth this season. One several occasions, he has simply refused to chase. If he is not injured, I'm not surprised Jarman called him soft.

Also, if Jarman was holding him back so he could have a dominant effect on the game in second half, I don't really see what the problem is.

I'm certainly no fan of Jarman's. I thought his coaching against Swans was one of the worst examples of coaching I've ever seen. But if Smith can't handle being told he needs to pull his finger out, when he clearly needs to, I'd suggest the problem is not all Jarman's.

It sounds like the Eagles need to move him to another club, that way at least Smith can get a fresh start.

Can you name one other occasion where a young eagles player, let alone a first year rookie, had to be moved between WAFL clubs mid season due to a personality conflict with a senior WAFL coach?

Several players have apparently already left Perth due to conflicts with the coach and that includes promising young ruckman Rhys Peedle who just signed with the Swans.

I think there is enough of a trend to suggest there is more to it then Smith's alleged arrogance.

Fair to say both Smith and Jarman are acting like immature brats but really Jarman is the senior authority here and should have the maturity to own up when he makes a error and should be trying to patch things up as opposed to making things worse

Jarman is running a dictatorship down at Perth and hes destroying the club from the inside out. He cant coach, hes just a complete prick of a person and most importantly his immature coaching style and his very tough approach is offputting and turning the players against him

A Perth player told me at team meetings he often brings up who he thinks were the softest players for the game and ridicules them infront of everyone. He did this to Smith and had a go at him for what he called the softest incident of the day despite the fact it wasnt even him. When Smith called him up on this he got in his face and then next week hes playing for the reserves.

Petty stuff really

The West mentioned a quote to Jarman said about Smith which mentioned he would look to give him more game time in the seniors next week.

Im really looking forward to watching Smith at work because he has killer speed watching his draft videos.

Players at either end of the West Coast Eagles spectrum were under notice in WAFL matches at the weekend – from a string of rookie-listed hopefuls to veteran premiership player Chad Fletcher.

It was Fletcher who was probably the most dominant contributor in a 34-possession effort for Subiaco as the Lions controlled the game against Peel. The smooth running left-footer continues to press for a recall by virtue of his outstanding vein of form.

By contrast a number of players looking to find a place on the senior roster also put their hands up with rookie-listed players like Adam Cockie, Lewis Stevenson, Ashley Arrowsmith and Callum Wilson all shining on the weekend.

Cockie, who has already played four games this season, was back to his best for Subiaco while Stevenson was a driving force behind Claremont’s upset win over West Perth, Arrowsmith kicked three goals to be Peel’s best player in a losing effort against Subiaco and Wilson kicked another five-goal bag for South Fremantle.

In addition experienced ruckman Mark Seaby was under notice for West Perth while East Fremantle pair Tim Houlihan and Jamie McNamara were steady and Will Schofield produced a hard working display at both ends of the ground for Peel.

East Fremantle v East Perth

Tim Houlihan: Playing his customary role on a wing, Houlihan collected 19 possessions in a serviceable performance in a losing team. Was at his best in the third quarter.

Jamie McNamara: McNamara produced a typically hard-working performance with 23 possessions and one goal. He played on Pat Travers and competed well to be among East Fremantle’s best.

Subiaco v Peel

Adam Cockie: A consistent four-quarter effort from Cockie, who continued to work hard in the contest. He carried the ball well, kicked a couple of great left foot goals and was among Subiaco’s best.

Chad Fletcher: A 34-possession, nine-mark effort saw Fletcher claim best on ground honours. He worked up and down the ground and was involved in most of his team’s forward 50 entries. He was very good around stoppages and rounded off his game with two goals.

Will Schofield: Schofield played at half-back and half-forward, picked up 27 possessions and five marks in a strong and consistent display. He injured his back in the opening term, but finished the game off well. He had a big final term with 12 possessions.

Ashley Arrowmsith: Arrowsmith played on the wing in a run with role on Hildebrandt. He kept Hildebrandt to a very low possession rate, picked up 13 touches of his own and finished his day with three goals. Hildebrandt got most of his possessions in the last term.

South Fremantle v Perth

Callum Wilson: The strong working Wilson played at centre half-forward against Zucconi in the first half and in the second half was opposed to Drum, beating both opponents. After kicking three points in first quarter, Wilson finished with five goals and was a key player for him team. His strong marking, he pulled down 11 grabs, was a real feature of his game.

Will Sullivan: Sullivan worked hard in ruck against Graham and Mugambwa and held his own. He won some decisive tap outs, his work rate was good and didn’t give Graham any latitude around the ground.

Ashley Smith: Opportunities were limited, playing only 40 minutes of the game, but had none possessions and two marks from his short time on the ground. Did his job when engaged in the action.

Claremont v West Perth

Beau Wilkes: In difficult conditions for Wilkes, as marking was tough in the prevailing gale, hehad seven possessions and took three marks before being injured in a marking contest and carried off in the second quarter. He took no further part in the game.

Pat McGinnity:Just two handballs in the first quarter and an injury to his arm saw McGinnity struggle to get into the game early but to his credit he continued to work hard and finished as a good contributor for Claremont. He used the handball well on a number of occasions to set up play.

Lewis Stevenson: Possibly Claremont’s most effective player in the difficult conditions, Stevenson had 28 disposals and seven marks. His run and willingness to demand the football have seen his confidence rise in recent weeks. He took a courageous mark – was assisted from the ground – and then returned six minutes later o kick his side’s winning goal.

Brett Jones: An eight-possession first quarter was the catalyst to a good effort from Jones, who eventually was assigned a negating forward by West Peth. Finished with 20 disposals and four marks.

Liam Bedford (reserves): Liam played in a back pocket and was often deep so 16 possessions was a good effort. When the ball was in his area he attacked it strongly and was a good player for his team.

Mark Seaby: Seaby had 32 hit outs and was a very good contributor for West Perth. Conditions were not ideal for a big bloke, but he still took a couple of strong marks and wielded some influence.

No I can't, but does that automatically mean it's Smith's fault?

Didn't we get rid of Mitch Morton for trying to tell the coaching staff at the eagles how to run the show and demanding that he get a regular game and be allowed to dictate where he played and get maximum game time? We got rid of him for pretty much nothing and most of the posters on here cheered on that decision and bagged the daylights out of Morton then and still do. But the same posters now think it's OK for our 17 year old rookies to do exactly that to WAFL coaches. Typical.

Jarman is a ****head but who would bother or want to be a WAFL coach if it gets to the stage where 17 year old AFL draftees can walk into your club and start dictating to you that they should play form notwithstanding and how much gametime they should get etc.

Thought id do a bit of a round up I heard on the radio coupled with stats. I will mention there is a big furore over Ashley Smiths non selection at Perth. Eagles are doing there best to move him to East Fremantle over the coming weeks.

Chad Fletcher - 38 possessions 11 marks 2 goals. Enough said. Was a class above and then some

Lewis Stevenson - Apparantly the best game he has ever played for Claremont, 28 possessions 7 marks and 1 goal but he won alot of hard ball and got crunched twice and still came back on to make a impact. Showed alot of tougness to go with his athleticism and clean skills he already has

Patrick McGinnity - Another good game tagging but also importantly winning the hard ball. Got 16 possessions with 8 of them clearances. For a tagger he sure can win a clearance. Deserves a AFL call up.

Mark Seaby - Best WAFL game of the season. 20 possessions 32 hitouts but most importantly he ran hard and used his older body to good use. Was named West Perths best player

Tim Houlihan - Not his best game. Was kept a close eye on. Ended up with 22 stats which is low for him but amassed a sensational 10 tackles to go with it. Very good for a kid with still a skinny body. Hopefully the club dont turf him. I think hes got a bit of Grant Birchall about him

Jamie McNamara - HEAVILY tagged with 2 rotating on him. Ended up with 20 possessions and 1 goal. Broke the tag late on but a decent game in the circumstances

Adam Cockie - 24 possessions and 2 goals 1. Played second fiddle to Fletcher but most interestingly he did spend a bit of time up forward apparantly. Cockie a forward pocket. Dont see why not...

Callum Wilson - I wish we didnt have so many KPPs cos he is the awesome atm. 5 goals 4 with 2 on the fulls. 19 possessions and 11 marks to boot. If we trade away the likes of B.Jones, Staker, Hansen, Wilkes then I say upgrade the lad

Brett Jones - 20 possessions of a half back flank. Did nothing to suggest hes ready for a AFL return

Ashley Arrowsmith - 15 possessions and 3 goals. Still cant see him getting upgraded. Lacks pace and doesnt really have the football smarts to make up for it

Will Schofield - Im surprised he just doesnt coach the team. Its the only position he hasnt played this year. Played off a wing and got 20 possessions in a solid game but all this switching cant be good for his development

Will Sullivan - 10 possessions 20 hitouts. His around the ground work simply MUST improve over the next 2 months if hes to earn himself another contract at the club

Just a thankyou for your time to write all this up. I love reading how the 'others' are playing and getting some feedback on thier performances away from AFL.
Thanks heaps:thumbsu::)

Not sure but I would imagine that the clubs would be dictated to by the eagles and any troubles would be dealt with by the eagles player management.
I think the eagles should send Smith to the Royals under Micale .

Arrowsmith moved clubs last year

Can't believe a Collingwood supporter beat me to that one!:D

How do you know that's what he has done? If the kid has simply stuck up for himself and said, hey, that wasn't me that did what you reckon I did, then that's a bit different to telling them what he wants to do.

Before we label this kid, perhaps we should know a bit more about what went on?

Perhaps this post by a Perth fan on Footygoss will give an idea of what's going on down at Lathlain...

Whats happening???

2009 promised to be the year of at least making a rare finals appearance.
Young players leaving mid season.
Players graduating taking much longer to develop than the young players at other wafl clubs.
No real in your face stand up and take notice players coming through.
Skills dont improve from one year to the next.
Football manager gone,Ceo gone, salary cap breach investigation.
Another year that our list doesnt look up to it.
Another wooden spoon more than likely heading our way.
We still get told be patient,be positive etc.....What are we waiting for and how long will it take?

What the stuff is happening?????

When will things turn around on field?????Certainly not in 2009.

But sure, it's all Smith's attitude...it couldn't possibly be anything else...

He may have attitude issues, he may not - I don't think anyone here is in a position to judge, particularly given the issues down that way at the moment.
