The question of the day, week, month, year... My old iPhone4 hasn't worked for 3 months and I'm currently using one of these Samsung flip-phone's from the local servo. I've been tossing up between the two of them and was considering waiting for the iPhone5 to come out as I've had one for the last two years.

Is the SIII good enough that I wont care about the iPhone5 coming out?
I know it comes down to my decision, but at this stage it looks like they wont come out until October. What cha' think Willis?

It's up to you: are you an Apple man, don't like change, and prefer Apple's operating system over a more open-ended platform? If so, wait.

If you just want the best thing out there and don't mind change for the better, get the S3. There will always be a next best thing around the corner, at some point you have to pull the trigger.

I prefer the size of the S2 to the S3.

I think the iPhone will struggle to remain relevant. The 4S, albeit successful, is/was a terrible phone. Terrible design, same as the much-criticised iPhone 4, too heavy, too big for a mere 3.5" screen, with a primary selling point of Siri (LOL).

Even the iPhone 5 mockups indicate to me that Apple cannot compete on hardware any more. When you release one device every 12-15 months, you're behind the game, and it was probably safe to say 2-3 years ago that Android phones would eventually catch up to Apple then surge ahead.

As a long time iPhone user, I'm just waiting to see the specs and ensure that it is LTE capable here. If it ain't up to scratch, I'll jump ship.

I'd rather not though, as I love the integration of iPhone / MBP, and have never had a desire to jailbreak it, so don't care about an open system. iOS is a very sharp. So long as it works as a phone, email client and gives BigFooty updates on the road (especially during trade week) then that's what really matters.

With regards to hardware, Apple just needs to focus on quality ala the MBP. The 4 is too heavy, but had a strong case to be considered the best phone on the market when I took a 2 year plan 2 years ago. It's a fast moving market, but if the hardware's up to scratch (weight/size/processor/LTE) this time around, there's little reason to change.

But most importantly, I don't want to move as I have 3 stars on every level of Angry Birds (original) and don't want to drop that achievement.

So yeah, I'm waiting, but get to use a half decent 4 until then, as opposed to a shitty flip phone, which would ultimately test my patience!

I really do appreciate how important this is, I'm in a similar position. I haven't jumped ship, yet I haven't upgraded either (still have a 3GS). You'd think the more popular games would save scores and achievements to the cloud so you could carry them across operating systems.

I'm waiting to see what the next iPhone is like. Happy with a bigger screen (overdue) and removal of the glass back of the 4/4s. I don't think the closed system is a big issue, that is, the approval process per se, but what does suck is the lack of functionality. A jailbroken iPhone shits on a non-jailbroken iPhone. Apple should be stealing those ideas and incorporating them into iOS.

But I imagine many people are in this boat: "I'm just not ready to switch to Android, no matter how lackluster the next iPhone is turning out to be."

A huge amount of iPhone users are just clueless sheep who don't even know there's an alternative.

It's more a reflection on the Apple end user and more importantly their mindset then it is toward the actual product.
Apple users are perceived to be gullible and simple minded.

Yeah, so there's a collection of moronic Apple haters out there. No surprise there!

I can't remember the name of the poster who always banged on about how his iRiver was so infinitely superior to iPods in specification that anyone not buying one was a sheep. Was an idiotic argument then and is a dumb argument now.

Or the vast majority just want something that is easy to use.

Bottom line is, it's just a phone. They're all just phones. If you're not a techie who will be able to get the absolute most out of a phone like an Android, why turn your nose up at the iPhone if you can afford it? No doubt there is the sheep element, there always is with anything. I'm with Figjam on this one, I really don't get the spite. People get too worked up about some of this stuff.

If they were 'just' phones, I would have never upgraded from my Nokia 3315. These days mobile phones are music players, media streamers, internet access points, cameras, video recorders and so on.

You act like you have to be a 'techie' to be able to use Android; quite the opposite. Android is a great experience for anyone and it has the option for someone to customise almost every part of it.

Note that Android fanbois are very vocal and usually have to have the last word/retort.

They get very worked up about anyone owning an Apple product.

To be honest, I've found it to be the other way around. I think that's where the stigma of dumb, simple and ignorant iPhone users comes from.

I think it started with iPhone users and the baton has been passed on. Maybe a new era of Windows Phone fanbois is next :D

I say just shake the stigma. Mobile phone years are like dog years.

I remember using Windows Mobile 6.1 in early 2008, FFS, on a device who's brand name I can't even remember, as a potential field data entry device, that could barely stay stable long enough to run one program and would crash every 10 minutes! And we're arguing over awesome OS's like iOS and Android, and hardware like HTC's, Samsungs and iPhones?? Talk about your first world problems!

It wasn't me, but I agree to a point. iRiver products were superior to the Apple range, the sound quality was similar or better and you weren't tied down to iTunes. If iRiver had the brand recognition and advertising budget of Apple things would have been very different.

As for the OP the decision is yours, past releases should tell you enough about Apples philosophy on "innovation". They'll throw in a feature or two other phones have had for years and market it as though it's a world first. Last time their big feature was Siri, a 3rd party market app that someone else developed for 4 years before Apple bought them out and claimed it as their own. This time they're playing catch up on screen size, oh.... and you'll have the pleasure of refreshing all your fancy and expensive gadgets because they've redesigned the connector.

If you like Apple stuff then get one, but don't be afraid to join the "dark side"........

Compared to the iPhone, though?

No, but they are just phones. People get very worked up over a stranger's choice of phone, something that has no bearing on anyone else's life at all.

You act like you have to be a 'techie' to be able to use Android; quite the opposite. Android is a great experience for anyone and it has the option for someone to customise almost every part of it.
No, but to be able to get the most out of it, you need to have a bit more knowledge about it all than the average Joe. Most people just want to be able to switch it on and away they go, which is exactly what the iPhone offers.

Note that this is coming from someone who doesn't own a smartphone. I just find it amusing that certain people get so worked up over this stuff when the decisions other people make don't affect them at all (or at least they shouldn't).

To "get the most out of" an iPhone you probably need to jailbreak it, something that's beyond your average user. Rooting/modding Android devices is an option if you're that way inclined but it's by no means necessary. Pretty much everything is replaceable and customizable on Android and it's done in a very simple way, but it's also something you can just pick up and use without changing a thing.

PS: I find it amusing that people with no interest in smartphones enter a smartphone discussion, although no one is surprised by the side you took ;)

It wasn't just down to a marketing budget. This is why people miss the point! It's a holistic thing with the iPod products, relative to the iRiver products that were often specced higher but looked and felt like shit. It's not always about a 'penis length' comparison. Refinement is a perfectly fair and reasonable factor for consideration.

This is a supposed mash together of parts by a supposed parts manufacturer. It's certainly not official yet and even if it is a tight example, then despite the disappointing elevation and familiarity of the front panel, there are plenty of specs unknown and you've shown the shittest of all of the "leaked" photos.

As for screen size, again, penis length comparison. The Galaxy Note Wins, but I wouldn't be seen dead pretending to conveniently put it in my pocket! Refinement, functionality, performance and reliability are high up on my list and if the Galaxy SIII is superior in all of these respects once we see the iP5 in earnest, then I'll pull the trigger on one that day.
