Walk into a Telstra shop and have a play with a couple Android devices (or steal a mates) and see how you go, if you're not tied into the world of Apple it's definitely worth checking out the "dark" side. The forums on Whirlpool also have a few "iPhone users converting to Android/Samsung" threads with answers to a lot of common questions from people making the switch. If you like them, pick an Android that suits you..... if not, grab an iPhone.

Same goes for all of the major choices, I think they all have some fanboys that are excessive.

Best bet is, go play with a few in store. Or, find friends etc that have the phones and find one you're comfortable with.

I don't believe there is one truly 'better' phone, just one that suits peoples needs better. Don't buy into the hype of any of them, without using, deciding for yourself.

Yep same here. The wife and I have a Samsung s3 an ip5 respectively, and both are top quality. I think the iPhone is more intuitive, personally, and hardware wise is top-end. People hating on apple make me laugh. It's no doubt the same people that hate on COD and Microsoft pc software and anything else that's mainstream because if they embrace it they can't differentiate themselves. No real hate for Microsoft here, other than their hit/miss/hit/miss/hit/miss OS releases they are fine.

It has nothing to do with mainstream or otherwise. A big reason why people "hate" Apple is because the company and their fans constantly harp on about how cutting edge and innovative the products are, while in the real world all they really do is a yearly re-release of the same 4-5 year old device with a couple of nothing features and people who don't know any better eat it up and throw money at them purely to seem like they are "up to date". I don't think I've ever sat at a table at a pub/party and had to listen to a bunch of Android fans fap over the latest app for half an hour or more, yet it seems to be a fairly regular occurrence for the iPhone crowd.

Anyway...... this argument has been done to death, every group has it's "pathetic" fanboys, deal with it.

I admit.... the first iPhone was innovative, it brought smartphones to the masses but they have done nothing since. Since that release the biggest feature additions have been Facetime (video calling, something that had been around for years), Siri (a useless feature they bought off the a developer who had been working on it for 3-4 years previously), and a bigger screen (only 2 years behind on that). Android has already surpassed Apple in the smartphone market, and even the S3 has overtaken iPhone in sales. Once Microsoft get their Marketplace going you'll see them taking market share off Apple too.

I don't hate Apple users, I just think a lot of them are more taken by the marketing and the "cool" factor than the actual devices and their feature sets (clearly you are one of these people). Apple provide a solid platform, but it's a relatively simple and very restricted platform. If that suits you then more power to you, personally that kind of environment is not for me. It's amusing watching every "advantage" and argument that iDevices and iUsers allegedly have get knocked off one by one.

IMO. the UI of iOS is all over the place now, needs an overhaul. I think Ive is the best choice of cleaning it all up. He doesn't seem a fan of gimmicky things that serve little to no function.


The whole custom roms etc on Android purely has no appeal to me. I know friends that love it it is just not me. I don't have many apps these days. Its just a business thing for me calander, contacts, phone calls, and few other things.

I think though the Mini would have been worked on and almost complete while Jobs was there and that he would have approved of it. What he said publicly and what when on behind the scenes were very likely 2 different things.



Jobs changed his mind all the time, from people he actually dealt with.

My suspicion with Jobs when he shot down ideas was 2 things - protecting what Apple was working on. 2 He was not convinced of an idea. I think is someone came up with an idea where a 7" tablet allowed for better functionality over a 10", that Jobs would be for it. Sometimes too, it seemed he just wanted people to be able to back up their ideas - did they believe in them.

Whhhhhhhy? I legitimately do not understand why people would choose an iPhone over the current range of android phones other than perhaps ease of use. It just doesn't make sense to me. I look at my girlfriends iPhone 5 and swipe from the left to the right a couple of times then get bored by being presented with the same thing. I have such a short attention span that I always want to change it up, add a photo of my daughter maybe, add a clock widget, get rid of said widget, add a weather widget, change the skin 5 times, get rid of it, add another picture of my daughter, change the wallpaper, change the layout and positioning of the pictures of my daughter, repeat. Android allows me to do all this and doesn't look down on me cause of it. The "our way or the highway" closed source attitude Apple adopt would drive me absolutely crazy.

I mean, all the power to you if you love your iPhone, thats fantastic and I'm not a fanboy (most days). I just don't understand

i had owned an iphone 4 - but eschewed iphone prior to that as i thought they were underfeatured - i used to own two phone shops at the time and got to use every new piece of hardware as it came out - nokia e71 was a far superior phone at the time for my needs -

this is where the smartphone argument can get bogged down


I have owned an android tablet before - that refused to hold on to my telstra mbb signal and constantly dropped out - looking on android forums - i got all sorts of advice - install this rom - root it and do this etc etc


too hard - no interest - whatsoever - i would rather peel my eyeballs and salt them whilst listening to nickelback. the tablet is in its box in the study gathering dust and has been there since a week after i bought it.


the appeal of apple is that you dont have to do shit like this - the only time ive ever had problems with my iphone was trying to sort a remote control app that controlled vlc/ winamp etc on my pc notebook - after 4 emails and a couple of days i got it to work probably 80% of the time - then it wouldnt work and id have to reboot the notebook - bbbbbbbbzzzzt - not good enough - the idea of using the notebook to run the projector was shelved


now i have a mac mini, and iphone 5, lightning to hdmi and the stream to me app - works flawlessly - every time



which brings me to the reasons i got the iphone 5 over the galaxy 3 - which was an agonising decision - the galaxy 3 is obviously the superior piece of hardware - however when i delved into what makes it superior - they were features that aside from the large screen, meant nothing to me. nfc - mmmmmm possibly but im really not fazed. the large screen presents its own problems though - in a case like and otterbox it doesnt fit in my top pocket of my work shirts - i drop my phone - lots.

due to the nature of my work - i install satellite tv, internet and terrestrial tv, i use my phone all the time - im in the country and need a gps that is internet independent - which i have tom tom for (expensive app) - i also have an app that finds where the satellite im after is in the sky and what elevation and twist on the lnb is needed - i have to upload photos of all my work as well as safety related stuff to a portal - that works with an app that is only available for iphone - the android boys - they had to go buy an ipod touch and tether it

now add all this to the grand or so ive spent on apps for my iphone that im loathe to leave behind and it made the decision for me - my wife now has my old iphone 4 and is getting an ipad mini - and all the apps i had on that as well as any new ones i buy

that and the fact that the entire apple ecosystem - if you have apple everything - everything works together so seamlessly that its a joy - i never have to spend any time trying to get shit to work - which for me is like coming home from work - and having to work unpaid. (have you ever seen a plumber whos plumbing works properly or a landscape gardener with a nice garden etc)


not to say i dont hate itunes as the spawn of satan - if anything were to make me shift it would have been that shitbox piece of dribble


so essentially this was the process i went through to buy my iphone - despite really wanting the galaxy - for no other reasons than no itunes and bigger screen - i ended up with the iphone again

the screen on the iphone is acceptable - barely = the functionality is excellent - and siri is ****ing awesome - i couldnt go back to a non voice operated phone again - people who slag siri off cant enunciate - i open all apps from lockscreen with siri and a multitude of other things whilst im driving - it rocks

what pisses me off no end is the never ending stream of dickheads i get that after hearing i bought an iphone accuse me of riding apples **** etc etc - like the only reason i bought apple is because of looks/ fanboi etc - i made a decision based on "my needs" and it was a decision that took weeks to make - if i didnt have the job i have i think i would have gone for the galaxy. but i get fandroids - every day on facebook posting iphone parodies.

the fandroids have definitely taken over from the fanbois for now.

'i think you misread what i wrote - im not too important - i just dont care - i have other far more enjoyable things (for me) to do than spending hours customising and recustomising my phone

i think this in itself highlights a major difference - you love tinkering with your phone - id prefer to tinker with my 4wd
