I was interested to read in The Age today that Rob Walls bought a Geelong membership.

He says he bought it for Tom Harley, who he reckons spoke honestly on 3Aw after the game on Sunday.

Wallsy has had this pure hatred for us since I can remember and would probably end up ridding of half our list if he was made coach.

That only makes up 1 of maybe 10-50 memberships he may have cost us by picking us for bottom the last two seasons.

A shattered Corey Enright reflects on the Cats' thrashing by Carlton after the final siren at Optus Oval on Sunday.

A week ago, the bookies couldn't split Carlton and Geelong. It was only a round-two game, but the ramifications for the loser would not be good. I was confident the Blues would win.

For a start, it was their first home game and playing in front of your supporters instils in the players a strong desire not to let their faithful down. You also knew that coach Denis Pagan would rev them up to be courageous and desperate. They were.

You also knew that with Brendan Fevola and Lance Whitnall up forward, the team was capable of kicking 15 goals. It kicked 16. And, with half-a-dozen lead-up games under their belt, the belief was that the "Foreign Legion" Pagan had recruited would be starting to gel. The performance of Heath Scotland, David Clarke and David Teague confirmed that.

I was even more confident of a Carlton victory when I saw Geelong coach Mark Thompson interviewed through the week. He lamented the fact that seven of his senior players would miss the encounter. This, he said, made it hard to perform well. It made me think the coach was approaching the game with a negative mindset. If I was one of the last seven Geelong players selected for this very important game, I would have gone into the contest thinking that my coach didn't have a lot of faith in my ability. Players aren't stupid.

I also thought that the Cats weren't capable of kicking more than 11 goals. They kicked six. Half of their players go weak at the knees when they get within goalkicking range. They just don't want to take a shot. They jelly out and go for some low-percentage short pass. It's weird.

So the Cats got hammered by a scratchy, but determined, Blues unit. The further the game went, the higher the Carlton players' confidence rose, as they realised they faced little or no resistance.

Just what can Mark Thompson do to salvage something from the season? For a start, forget about the senior players who are out. Collectively, they are not much good anyway. Insisting on discipline is a must. Crude tackles, late tackles, indiscriminate hits to opposition players' heads and abuse hurled at umpires has marred the first two rounds.

Developing kicking skills under pressure is a priority. Brent Moloney and James Kelly can kick long on the run but who else? To work on goalkicking from set and snap shots is a must. I've never seen a team so goal-shy. And just refuse to play players who lack the courage to put their bodies at risk when it is their turn to go. Brisbane is the benchmark in this area. When did you last see a Lions player pull out? With Geelong, it happens every week.

But all is not gloom and doom for Geelong. Forty minutes after Sunday's game at Optus Oval, we at 3AW interviewed Geelong defender Tom Harley. The honesty from Harley was refreshing. He didn't pull any punches. He was embarrassed and distraught by the performance of his team. He questioned whether some of his teammates realised just how devastating a performance like that can be to the club. He admitted teammates who gave away stupid free kicks knocked the confidence out of the team.

He was bewildered as to why players who were within goalkicking range opted not to have a go. And he was candid when questioned as to why he, the regular centre-half back, was shifted to full-back to play on Fevola in the third quarter. "I don't know why," he replied. "I was just told to go to full-back as I ran down the race to enter the ground."

As it turned out, Fevola kicked three goals on Harley before Matthew Scarlett was returned to full-back.

Kelli Underwood, the 3AW reporter who conducted the interview with Harley, told us later that the burly defender was on the verge of tears as he spoke.

For me, Harley's heartfelt response to Geelong's plight was its only positive for the day.

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said through the week that a bad loss could cost the club 1000 memberships. Maybe it will. It will, however, gain at least one. Yesterday morning, I bought a Geelong membership for 2004. It was not bought to support the Geelong Football Club, it was bought to support Tom Harley, an honest man and an honest footballer.

That really hit me. Seriously, Bomber should learn from what Tommy's done here and admit to mistakes he's made, accept the blame, and show some emotion and passion for the club. In the interview, Tommy wore his heart on his sleeve when he spoke. Tommy you're a legend.

As much as I hate Walls and his usual biased comments. This article really sums up the last 2 weeks.

Would be fantastic, can't see him doing it sadly :(
Bomber even hinting that it's not all the players would be great.

Harley talking about being told to go to Fevola when he was running down the race was pretty staggering.

Shame about us playing Sydney and not having much hope (Goodes Vs Chambers makes me twitch)

Walls has done this brilliantly.

He's given us the biggest kicking i've ever seen, yet comes out of it smelling like roses.

Did 'The Age' pay for the membership?
