Play Nice Was that Gaffs last game for WC?

WC supporters in here. Do you follow Gaff on his social media accounts. Has he ever posted pics with Brayshaw?
Pav is saying they haven't even met. Surely Nisbett would have checked that before saying it in his press conference. Has Pav got the wrong end of the stick or Nissy?

Personally I couldn't care less whether they were best men at each other's weddings or total strangers. Why does it? A punch was delivered by one that sent the other to hospital, I would hope a tribunal doesn't use a best mates defence to reduce the penalty or something similar.

As to Nisbett, if you poll 100 Eagles fans 95 of them would say they want him gone.

Its hard though, the AFL can't win.

Player X gets a fine for a soft punch and people are outraged that the sport is becoming soft.

Player Y gets a week for a punch that is vaguely harder and again everyone is outraged.

So the AFL is damned if they do and damned if they dont.

The way to fix it is to outlaw it from the game. You don't have to throw punches to be a hard footballer. The game doesn't need it... get rid of it.

If you're WCE with a good shot at a flag you'd be pulling out every stop possible to get him 5 weeks and available for a GF. I don't think they will be going there and bending over.
If you are literally any club in this circumstance.

Its not the defendants job to make the prosecutions case.

If i were deciding this punishment i would calculate exactly how many games it would take to make sure he didnt play this year again and that would be the baseline.

So if wc lose their first and then win through to the gf + the remaining games in the season.

That said if i were defending him - id be using any bits of vision or whatever that i could - to bring it down to five.

The afl have themselves in a bit of a quandary with this - they have serious form in letting multiple star players off for blatant offenses that any other time would have ended in suspensions so as to let stars play gfs.

Maybe its time we thought about a 3 for 1 rule in finals so punishments stay in proportion - without killing the teams finals hopes - yet making sure the punishment is worthwhile.

If a player earns 1 week in finals - he can take the week - or serve 3 next year.

Ie if gaff gets 7 - and assuming eagles go straight through to the granny undefeated.

There are 3 games left in the season

Leaving 4 games owed

He wants to play in all 3

So next year he would serve 9 weeks + 1 left over as well as 3 this season. - total 13.

I agree. But Nisbett used them being mates as a sort of defence to Gaff's character.

Short memory? Don’t you remember Fyfe king hitting Lewis from behind off the ball a couple of seasons ago when he was at Hawthorn?

http://m.afl.com.au/video/2014-08-17/is-fyfe-in-strife

Comprehension issues? A hit like this said. You know. Impacted teeth. Broken jaw. Fed through a straw. That sort of thing?

It's been 35 years. The last time resulted in a criminal conviction (later overturned on appeal).

I don't pay any attention to what Nisbett says. He isn't the only CEO or president in the AFL that the majority of fans have a dislike for.

Because we have to look after the real victim here... Gaff.

Wow, just wow. Lost all respect for the Eagles. Fans (not all) are disgusting, many clearly making excuses and victim blaming, the standing ovation, just disgusting. The coach defends , deflects and then rewards Gaff with 4 coaches votes. I liked Simpson up until Sunday, not any more. The CEO makes tough statements about exactly this kind of act during preseason the backtracks when one of his own is involved and has a crack at a clearly upset opposition club.

The Eagles have drenched themselves in shit in their response. It can be clearly contrasted with the reaction to Bugg's hit on Mills by Melbourne. The fans, the coach and the club all said it was completely unacceptable and Buggy would have to work to regain respect.

The Eagles have never rated that high on the list of clubs I hate, now they're right up there with Essendon, Carlton and Hawthorn
You have no idea. The crowd was not cheering Gaff because of the incident - I was at the game and most of the crowd had no idea of the extent of Brayshaw's injury at that time - I did not know until I got home later and that is a fact. There was no replay of the incident on the screen at the Stadium and thought it was just your normal type injury. Knew Gaff could be in a bit of strife but thought at that stage it would only be perhaps a 2 week stint on the sidelines.
Also as it was possible that this could be the last time Gaff played in our colours and with the harassment he had received from the Docker players in the latter part of the game was the reason the crowd were cheering. Also could see that he was distraught as off the field Gaff & Brayshaw are friends and with his brother all were out playing golf together only last week. So very much doubt because of that he would line Brayshaw up as you say. Sure he meant to lash out because he was being harassed but it went horribly wrong with the change of position by Brayshaw. That was the risk that Gaff took - obviously a brain fade.
It may have been wiser for Gaff to have not come back on but as we were already one man down with rotations would think that was the reason he went back on.
All very well to sit back and throw stones - sure Gaff deserves his whack for whatever he gets from the Trubunal. It's not as if Gaff has a reputation for being this type of player - up until now his record has been squeaky clean and anybody who knows him say it was just way out of character. As a supporter I thought he would be the last player on our list who could do such a thing. Obviously we all hope that Brayshaw makes a full recovery and wish him well - it was a sad day for all concerned.
Also as far as votes go players are judged on how well they played over 4 quarters - its for the best player, not fairest & best. Gil was asked on "Talking Foity" would this incident disqualify Gaff in being able to be selected in the All Austealuan side at seasons end and he said no for the same reason and that it was only the Brownlow that he wouldn't be eligible as that is the only award that is for "fairest and best".
I think everybody just needs to settle down a bit and fortunately there are some in the Victorian media who have seen it more for what it is and that it was never Gaff's intention to cause such a serious injury to Brayshaw, however as Gaff has found out "you do the crime you do the time" as the saying goes!
End of sermon and have a good day:thumbsu:

No drunk driver intends to kill someone, No drunk bozzo on a saturday night really want's to kill someone with a punch etc. etc.

It's a weak excuse and for some reason the lights just aren't on at WCE HQ, people are genuinely outraged by the incident and they want to put their heads in the sand.

You said you didn’t know what had happened, but in the very next sentence you claim that the crowd was cheering because it could be his last as an Eagles player.

A WC supporter was on the radio yesterday said she didn't know what happened. Then she said said was cheering Gaff because it might be the last time they sew Gaff in WC colours.

I don't know, maybe she thought he was going to be rested for the next 6-7 games because his character is just so good.

The "hate" as you call is is so "overtop" because this is the first time in 35 years that someone has had their jaw broken like this by a sucker punch, whether intended for the jaw or not.

Things that have happened since the last time we saw a punch like this:

- The Soviet Union disintegrated
- Amazon was founded
- Smartphones were invented
- South Africa was liberated
- Pluto was decided not to be a planet
- Australian cricket sucked, was world beaters, sucked again
- Michael Jordan played his entire NBA career
- Richmond won a Grand Final

There have been a large number of near miracles since something like this last happened.
Jordan lewis last year on Cripps

You then went on to suggest a system should be put in place to look after the perpetrator.
I went on to suggest a syatem that would end with him getting nearly double the amount of weeks suspension in order to play finals. 13 vs 7.

As it stands the afl has let a number of players off for clear offenses that any other time would have been suspensions. Last year it was cotchin.

I wouldnt be surprised if the afl this afternoon give him 5 weeks do he can still play in a gf.

I suggested an alternative that ensures players get the due amount of weeks for whatever the offense is - and then can trade so as to not affect finals. That trading however - attacts an extra penalty. 3 for 1.

Or maybe - it was the only game she had tickets to this year.

Lol. That was a glancing blow and Cripps played the next week. Completely incomparable to what Andy Brayshaw is going through.

I know what you suggested. A system that let's some thug play finals in place of a few games at the start of the next season. A system that looks after the perpetrator.
