If you take a look at our playing list, most of them are still young and are either just about to hit their prime, or are in it right now.

Over 70% of our playing list are under 26 years of age.
Most footballers play until around 30-31 which means our current playing list still has around 4-5 years in it's prime.

In 2010 we won the premiership still having a LOT of young players in our squad. And since then most of them have matured and gotten better too!
Beams, Blair, Reid, Cloke, Pendlebury, Goldsack & Shaw have all improved from 2010.
We've also added in Krakouer and Fasolo in 2011, as well as blooded a lot of young stars in Sinclair, Seedsman, Keeffe, Elliott, Paine, Williams.

Now what i'm trying to say is, provided we can keep our list together. We are going to be a very dominant team for at least the next 3 years.

Even this year we've been dogged by injury and so many off field issues, we've still made the prelim finals (And still going!) Imagine next year when we get Ball & Macaffer back, as well as Keeffe and Williams. We'll also have a fit Dawes, a Cloke without any contract issues, a fully fit Thomas and Sidebottom, and hopefully a fit Didak and Jolly - We'll blow so many other teams away.

This year we've blooded so much young players it's not funny.
- Sinclair
- Elliott
- Mooney
- Paine
- Ugle
- Seedsman
- Yagmoor
- Williams

As WELL as other shining stars yet to play.
- J.Thomas
- Witts
- Ceglar
- Hartley

We'll have incredible depth for our 2013 charge at the flag, and with a fit and rejuvenated list even if we don't go on to win the premiership this year you can watch out for the pies next year because they will be absolutely amazing. We have pretty much 35 players on our list that we can field and say go out there and play a decent game. No other club has this benefit!

So it brings me to this, was the 2010 premiership premature and just a sign of things to come? Because 2013-2016 can be a Collingwood dynasty!

1990.................2010.............

Premature?

Me thinks more like overdue.

But I know what you're getting at.

2011 came down to being physically exhausted from nearly 3 years of playing the highest rotation, most defensively demanding style of footy.
This year we are still a viable threat, but next year we will probably lose a few older players, especially if we do mange to snatch the flag.
The youth coming through bodes well for an extended window, but Jolly and the lack of any viable replacement may cruel us with WC, Hawks and NM all boasting superb ruck departments.

Ah, i didn't mean it like that. I meant premature for the stature of our playing list.

Once we can get Bucks gameplan together, not as much off field and contact drama, and not have a freak year again we will become a great threat like we were in 2010/start-mid 2011.

Ruck divison? We've got two aces up our sleeves their names are Jarrod "Sandilands MkII" Witts and Johnathon "Ceggggggglar" Ceglar.
Jolly has until the end of next year i reckon, then i'm pretty sure we can snatch a replacement with Wood gone.

What about 'Have we started a dynasty?'. Would that be more accurate?

If we win the premiership this year then i'd answer yes, else it's still 'Can we start a dynasty?'

No dice on dynasty. Need to hold Cloke and grow some rucks and improve in a few areas just to win another flag in the next few years. The dynasty call post 2010 was premature. I recall a certain belief post 1990. That didn't work out well. Bombers went through 2000 almost undefeated. Dynasty, no. Dynasties are hard. Geelong had a super team. Brisbane also, plus salary cap. Let's just hope we win another before worrying about dynasties.

Um, a Premiership and a Grand Final appearance in the last two years. Surely if we win the Premiership this year then the dynasty started two years ago?

Yeah that's true, however if we don't then i don't think we can call a 2013 premiership a dynasty we started in 2010.

I think it was a pretty widely held view back then that 2010 was at best the very beginning of what the media like to term our "window" if not a bit premature in those terms. The fact is that some windows are only open momentarily so hopefully not but it may also prove to have been the end of our window. You take your chances when you can. Thankfully we did this in 2010 and hopefully we can do it again (very) soon.

There's an argument for that.

We were the youngest premier since 1978. Hawthorn won that flag, and didn't win another till 83 or 84? I think.

Baby Bombers of 93 didn't show their faces again till 99, and then won in 2000. Shows me sides that win it young, tend to be back again once that young list matures.

Having said that, we played off in another GF the year after, and look like we're going to play in another this year.

Id day so, Geelong won flag 3 against us "kids" so without getting stats to justify my positioning I'd say we'd be cherry ripe and in the "Geelong " window by 2014???

I believe - as I've said before - we were about a year ahead of our expectations in 2010.

A few things point to this without being compelling arguments

1. The age spread of the playing group for that finals series
2. The AFL experience level of that same group
3. Mick had another year to go - and Mick is nothing, if not methodical and pedantic in his planning
4. The first GF we drew shows how close to the edge of readiness we were

We had our share of injuries during the H&A campaign but in players like Blairy, Caff and Goldy we nailed the replacements and actually received a boost.

Most GF winning teams are a mixture of youth and experience, ours was a leaning a little towards youth but we brought it home.

You could say we were a bit like Hawthorn who won it a few years too early then took a while to get the team together again.

But I don't think that's true at all. Hawthorn were good that year but GEelong were better. Then the Hawks fell off totally. Collingwood has remained a top 4 side and may make the following 2 GF's following the premiership win.

I think we are well and truly into our premiership window and I think it can remain open for a good 5 years. If we lose Cloke however we might be set back a bit...but the salary cap room that is freed up should allow us to fill the void quickly.

In my mind it was premature. Pre - 2010, I pegged us to win it in 2011, and I'm convinced that had we lost to Geelong in the 2010 prelim we would've won in 2011. Regardless, i'm glad we won and when we win it this year I'll be even gladder.

We didn't win it because our list became physically mature, we had a brief 12 month advantage with a game plan no other team could replicate

We'll see now and going forward what a mature list and a great young coach can do

2010 was not premature it was over due. We made changes we should have made previously. 2011 proves the 2010 list was ready. We should have won in 2011 but for a few poor decisions by player through the year and some poor coaching in the GF. This year Hawthorn have caught up and walked throug the door that our injuries opened for them.

plus we had made a number of semi and prelim finals before the GF win. So it didn't come out of nowhere. We just needed that extra something whcih Jolly and Ball gave us to get us over the line.

We were always closer than people thought...but we definitely got the most out of our younger players that year.

You can have premature issues in bed....
You can have premature issues giving birth...
etc, etc, etc

But premature, winning a premiership or being champions??

LOL no.

as someone already pointed out, Pies were champions for a reason, being the best team that season.

Pies winning with a young list only means, the window is longer than "good" teams with older players.
2012 will be the 3rd year in a row where Magpies were premiership contenders (winner of 1)... and I can see it continuing 2-3 more years assuming we keep all the young guns and continue to develop youth on the side.... or of course if Pies must, trade young guns for younger players with "gun" potentials etc.

You take each year as it comes, and we happened to be the best team during September in 2010. History is littered with examples of clubs coming from no where to win a flag. The PIES in 1990 were not favourites, Adelaide's back to back flags in the late 90's, and arguable Hawthorn stole one in 2008.

They are never premature - you just need to play the best footy in September.

as mentioned by jonbe & HPWS, after 2009 our time appeared to be 2011, considering the issues we still faced in 09, mainly being our elite players being physically ready to handle the geelong/hawthorn/stkilda mature bodies. the elite players did mature sufficiently to take 2010, and therefore said to me 2011 is a certainty. we know what happened there.

2012/13/14/15/16......remain well within our scope, either singularly or as a whole. however the rest of the competition also want the same, and some of them are ready to pinch what we think is ours.

I was certain we were going to win the flag in 2011 back in 2009, so it came a year earlier than I expected!
