Who is the better player?
After all the flak copped by Stanton over the last couple of years he is turning it on this year following, and improving on, a very good season last year.
But Watson is a statesman. He is a hard worker, gets in and under, has the class and leadership and I feel can take a game on and change the course of a game more so than Stanton.

Personally I give my vote to Watson.

Thought this would be an interesting poll...

Stants has probably been my favourite Essendon player since he was drafted. Has been a consistently good player since that time and it's great seeing his hard work being rewarded with his current form.

However, Watson probably is the better player. I don't like the train of thought that an inside game is supposedly a lot harder than the outside game (I find it too simplistic and it ignores the amount of effort and skill it takes to run hard and deliver with precision), but Watson's dragged us over the line so many times in the last few years in a way that Brent really hasn't (although he's been a vital component in many of our wins). So I vote Watson, even though I think it's really close, especially this year.

Good poll.

Watson is the better player; however I think Stanton has thus far had the better 2012.

I agree with this, but there's something about the way Watson does it that impresses me, can't put my finger on it which is why I couldn't explain it very well in the OP.

He has that rare quality where he seems to have all the time in the world in a very heavy contested situation. Watson is a better player than Stanton, though Stanton has definitely been the better player this season so far.

Watson has been a much more valuable player over the course of their careers. Sure they both play different roles, but Watson is the engine room. A easily superior footballer.

Essendon starting really falling apart when he got injured last season

If anything, we struggle without Stanton more.

Nobody can replace the running prowess he provides, the linking up he provides. Nobody.

Sure Jobe's our best, but we did manage to beat Geelong and a few others without him last year, and this year our contested ball winners have gone up a notch, with Longeran, Howlett and Hocking all doing their part, and Melksham, Zaharakis and Monfries having developed a better inside game.

It's a big call, but I'd almost prefer to lose Jobe for a few weeks, if I had to choose.

Looks like Jobe made some BF accounts and gave Stants a couple of sympathy votes

Watson by a country mile. Watson is their most important player. Stanton gets it a lot easier on the outside and for some reason or another, never seems to have an opponent.

Without Watson, the Bombers would struggle to make the 8. And Stanton wouldn't dominate the way he has if it werent for Watson doing all the hard yards with the grunt work, as well as copping the number one tag every week.

Depends on what you mean:

Overall totality of games: Stanton>Watson
2012: Stanton>Watson
Better player over the past few years: Watson>Stanton

Spot on. He's been a vital performing player since he joined the club, Jobe took years to strip off the puppy fat and find his groove.

Voted for Watson as he is more important to the team from here on in, but Stanton is being extremely under rated and disrespected by a heap of nuffies in this thread. That said, couldn't give a shit what they think, happy for fools to continue to under rate him while he rips their teams apart. :thumbsu:

Opponent has fainted from exhaustion.

Swan runs in bursts, though.

Stanton runs from end to end throughout the entire game.

Buddy also spends large portions of games resting up forward, and I haven't seen Judd continually cover ground like Stanton does.

Ablett maybe, yeah.

Buddy only starts in the F50 at centre bounces. If the ball goes the other way from the centre bounce so does he. He is always on the move and often runs at full pace from the HBF into the forward line.

Matthew Richardson said this today about Buddy: "There's no doubt that for a man of his size - 196cm and 102kg - his mobility and running ability aerobically is the best in the competition," Richardson says.

Buddy is good for a big man, but on pure ground coverage and endurance Stanton has him covered quite easily.

Don't need an article about it as it's just pure fact.

I don't think you understand the repeat sprinting that Franklin does over long bursts during the course of a game. Whereas Stanton runs at three quarter pace without a tag most games, Buddy sprints up and down the ground repeatedly to burn off opponents, and makes about 25+ full pace leads a game. It's got to the stage where almost weekly opposition coaches will come out and say they are going to rotate three players on Franklin because one person alone can't keep up with him the whoe game. Matthew Richardson reckons Buddy has the biggest tank in the comp. I would take his opinion over yours.
