I would love to know why.

I know he hasn't been in the best form, but surely playing against a weaker, younger side could have been the confidence-booster he needs.

Plus it seems subs are best used as 'burst' or 'impact' running types to make their mark against tired legs, not a KPF.

Scratching my head at this decision.

I can think of two reasons.

1. To warn him he could potentially be dropped, and
2. He's fairly versatile.

I thought it was ordinary from Bailey. As The Dr said, it was a perfect time for him to get some confidence back. With the size of most of the bodies it would have been the U18 carnival all over again.

****ing pathetic from bails, had the chance for an easy kill, baileys a pathetic insipid prick.

The other side of the argument is much simpler, that he is the worst performing player in the twenty-two, therefore starts as the sub.

It could be thought disrespectful to say play him against the Suns because he is bound to play himself back into form. Not to mention Dunn needed to find some touch too.

Seems an odd decision, although obviously the Demon's coaching panel are much more up with their plans than i could ever be. As others have said, it would have been a chance for him to clunk a few marks in the forward line, move into position with the forward structures with a little less pressure around than against most other sides and just get a feel for his place in the team. Being subbed on with just a quarter would have given him limited opportunities to do that.

Geelong has employed Milburn as a sub twice now in 4 weeks, but he is 34 and perhaps is best used in a role where he plays say 50 minutes and comes on fresh as the others have slowed down. Not really a burst sort of player but handy and a cool head when needed.

It was a good win in the end for the Dees, a big last quarter and a 90 point win must do the side a bit of good. being 2-1-1 now with a nice percentage your side can build on that and stake a calim for a place in the 8.

why would it be disrespectful, we won by 90points, baileys is a disgrace, let the kid find form, ffs morton kicked 3, worst move that fools done in 4yrs in coaching.:thumbsd:

If Watts wasn't a number one pick would his form warrant a game? Of course not. Bailey should of dropped him, playing him as a sub served absolutely no purpose what so ever.

We went soft on Moloney, what he did last Sunday showed no professionalism and was disgraceful. Way to set an example. He shouldn't have played today but because of his current form will just remove the (vc) from his name. Wow, really taking a hard approach there Bails. Not coaching for your job are you?

Watts doesn't need a warning that he will be dropped, he should be, regardless of who we are playing and what pick he was taken. We aren't good enough to give charity games to anyone, time to take a stand from this gutless half arsed crap.

Bailey needs the bullet, he stands for nothing.

Completely agree with most of that, specifically that if Watts wasn't considered in good enough form to be in the 21, he should've been dropped completely, not wasted on the subs bench. Absolutely baffling decision.

I think that Bailey was more worried about potentially losing against GC, and wanted the game in the bag first before bringing Watts on. We are effectively playing with 17 players with Watts on the field atm.

If Bails was more concerned about winning the game, good on him - I can deal with Watts being shit now, but Melbourne losing against GC would have been unbearable.

Watts didn't get a chance to do much today. When he did he was okay. I'd wouldn't say we where a man down with him out their. He has made big inroads when it comes to getting into the contest.

I think that is also the reason why he didn't drop Moloney. Like Crawford said in the paper today, it was a cop out. Rude is spot on the money with his post.

Watts hasn't earnt a game since last year

This must be particulary fustrating to Bate and Pettard who have played alot better than Jack when given the opportunity yet when they perform badly they are immediately sent back to Casey

Jack needs to play for Casey next week and prove his worth, if he doesn't put in a 4 quater effort he needs a longer spell and shouldn't come back in after the bye

Bate and Petterd are never going to be key position forwards. Maybe Watts is the same but I'd like to give him every chance.

We need a guy who can be a target at CHF. You can't win a flag without one.

I'd drop him because he still obviously lacks confidence at this level.

I think he has all the talent in the world but I can't see how a few weeks in the reserves won't hurt him. At least make him earn his spot.

And for those who say we need a CHF, even with Watts in we don't have one (He lacks the confidence/size to play that role, and having a sub-par CHF is going to hurt our structure more than playing as if we don't have one at all).

Clearly he was played as a sub to give him a bit of a rocket, without completely shattering his confidence by being dropped. I thought it was a good decision.

Maybe I'm looking at this through rose coloured glasses but I thought Watts won every contest he was in for that one quarter. Way too conservative leaving him off that long IMO.

I agree. I thought he was pretty good for the qtr he was on the ground. 6 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles

Obviously the shanked kick was bad but he was great in limited minutes otherwise. That bear hug tackle was awesome. :thumbsu:

Drop him IMO.

If there was no-one else pushing for a spot (see 09/10) then you'd play him every week, but with Petterd and Newton playing well at Casey, you can't justify keeping him in.

Wait till he kicks a bag at Casey, then bring him back in. The sad fact is, playing a side like Collingwood or Hawthorn, you'd expect Petterd to get you a goal or two before Watts.
