Did anyone else catch the Wayne Hughes interview on the radio?

For those that don't have broadband :-

Spoke about new recruits, said they all did their bits and pieces. The development of Josh Kennedy is important for the future of Carlton - very pleased with the way he went, presented very well at CHF - a natural - runs forward and leads, but goes back to goals as well. Let them put Waite down back. Said if Kennedy doesn't mark the balls, no-one else will (good mark, good crumbers).

Ability to have strong forward line. Can play Big Red up there and Waite gives more run out of defence, which will help us.

Defence - Saddington and Whitnall - Kennedy really gives us options. Saddington's first uninterupted pre-season. Lance up and down. Good rotation.

Gibbs - thumb just popped out, and they 'wrapped it up in cotton wool." He's been watching him for 2 years, so he knows the things Gibbs can do but he's sure everyone watchign him was excited.

NExt week can't come quick enough. Bryce is very impressive. Said Gibbsy and Marc Murphy will have a lot of fun together over the next few years. Rotated on ball together. 15 possession for Bryce in first half, 21 for Murphy. Betts had a good game. Walker got a lot of the ball, Cameron Cloke and Ackland were good - recruitment of Cloke so he can give us flexibility - he's a really good kick and very good aroudn the ground. They're happy with picking up Ackland.

Kouta - give him opportunities to play, where it best suits the team, where he plays best. Terrific at the stoppages, adn they'll just look after him.

Competitiveness of Sammy Jacobs - thumb operation yesterday, ready for start of season. Has been outstanding since arriving at the club, very likable young fella, keen to learn, "Gary Dempsey's love child already." :)

Pratt has addressed teh group on monday morning - the message was to have respect for the club, and respect for where you get yoru pay packet from. Addressed the incidents over the weekend very quickly as well as good publicity, and the positive press about Gibbs and Murphy.

How long have we had Hughes as recruiting manager?
He seems to be one of the best going around.
We all say that these dark times we have been suffering are the result of years of bad recruiting, was he the answer to our problems?
Is he the real brain behind our onfield turnaround that is finally starting to happen?
Would love to know exactly when he started to I could compare our our pre-Hughes drafts to our recent ones...

I think his first draft was 3 years ago, when we recruited Russell, Hartlett, Blackwell, Bryan and Raso.

Since that draft, I cannot fault the recruiting one bit. His first draft looks a little weak ATM, but if we give them time, Russell, Hartlett and Raso can all make it. Blackwell is already a good player. Bryan is no longer with us. Reasonably good draft.

Our drafting has certainly improved since he joined us.

Wayne just copied what i stated yesterday.

Damn you Wayne!!

I like the idea of Waite and o'hAilpin running out of defence :)

I like the thought of Kennedy, Whitnall and Fevola all up forward, providing good targets and scaring opposition defenders.

He seems pretty happy with himself, and so he should be.

Great to hear the way he spoke about JK and Jacobs, particularly how Jacobs was Garry Dempsey's love child. :thumbsu:

Amazing that Gibbs had 15 touches in the first half - Goosebumps again.

WH has done a great job in recruiting the best but to be fair we have had 1st pick. But i love how he recruited pace last year. the slowest over 20 mts is Bryce Gibbs who you wouldn't swap for anyone

Just can't wait to watch Murph and Bryce Gibbs in action. Gibbs just seems to have an awareness and vision that very few players have. It's a talent you either have or don't, and can't be acquired on the training track. Murph has a similar ability. Even in his early games, you could see that Murph could read the unfolding of play better than most others, and knew where to position himself without being told. These type of players have the basic skills sorted, and try to refine the advanced skills at an early stage i.e improving the effectiveness of a tackle, and learning to get and execute a quality disposal while being tackled and dragged to the ground. We not only have 2 #1 draft picks, but possibly the best 2 in the past 20 years. :)

Interesting that Murphy got 21 possessions in the first half but a lot of supporter reports had him as being a little quiet. How many times did Ratten or Diesel rack up huge numbers at the bottom of packs, with quick little gives that nobody notices? Quiet accumulator is Murph.

He said Murph had 21 for the entire game.

But your right about Murph, he was excellent and got plenty of the ball all game.

I remember on a number of occasions going home after a game thinking that Ratts had a quiet game, only to look at the stats in the paper the next day & see that his disposal count was in the high 20s.

I think in years to come it will be Gibbs that provides the flair & Murphy who does his damage in a more workmanlike manner.

The thing about Murph's disposals is that they are quality and effective. Many so called "midfielders", accumulate most of their possessions from some silly keepings-off game plans that mean little e.g. the famous Hodge back pocket receive. Murph gets his possessions in heavy traffic and executes his disposal well under pressure. :)
