Hopefully we do what's best for him to produce his best football and to become the best player he can be.

And not shuffle him around to accommodate others.

I'm sure he'll be M Okay in that regard.

I may be wrong here but I think the Freo game was the last game Campo got his way in the Mackay/Milera debate and probably the start of him rejigging the coaches box to bring in people with a more objective voice in the debate for selection. I would not be surprised if Pyke has lessened the value of two coaches votes in the selection process to make sure bullshit friendships don't stand in the way of what is best for the club

Best to start him half back and let him pinch hit a bit in midfield

As time goes on just gradually increase his mid minutes as long as his game is improving in there

Before you know it he’s a mid

Agreed.

If it is a gradual process, his confidence won't be shot by a bad game in the guts...and he will have those. By switching him back to HBF where he knows he can play a role, then he will always have some confidence in his game which is important. As you have said, won't be long, his first few games at HBF were OKish, got a bit better and the last half dozen were very good. He just needs to make sure he doesn't make the avoidance of a tackle his thing, you can overdo that in the guts and end up having your forwards all out of position when you decide to kick

Barring injury....Milera will become our most damaging player bar none.
The term "gun" doesn't do him justice.
Neither does "elite"
If we win a flag in the next 2 years....Milera will be a big reason why....ironically Danger will have nothing but a Brownlow...proving what a selfish knob he is...."Buckley Justice" as i put it.

True but will also be good to have one guy in there who has ability to get out of the congestion with footy in hand

Will add to the mix

Drip feed him in there for a bit and no doubt at some point he has a break out game and then consider leaving him there

The problem with the gradual approach is if we take it too gradually. He could spend a solid 2 seasons switching between HB and mid, and then when we try to give him more midfield minutes, he can't do it extremely well because he's too used to playing at half back

He needs to be a mid by 2020 IMO

Agreed but talking next season too

In the end he will just do it himself and coached tactics won’t matter , he will get in there and start performing and that will be it

Hate to compare but exact same thing happened with McLeod under Blighty and it took until the finals to nail it

The other thing is I don’t think Milera will be as dominant with Smith there in defence and it will take some adjustment for him , he was a bit quieter when smith came back from
Memory

I'd be willing to go the other way with Milera and instead of gradually letting him learn the position, I'd start him as a full time midfielder from the get go and let him learn on the fly. Switch to HBF every now and then during games just to lower the amount of time he's on the bench and give Smith/Laird a break.

You may be right. Interesting though in an interview a week or so back he mentioned that he has missed large blocks of all his previous preseasons due to patella tendonitis. Mentioned he is moving freely now, though still needs to take care and manage it. Personally I was a little surprised he won the 2km time trial

Maybe the other guys have come back in McGovern-ish shape leaving Milera to Bradbury the time trial :P

When ROB is also in the top 3, something isn't adding up...

Jeez, talk about blowing the lid off!:p

Both he and Doedee are in the best 22 under 22. That's not a bad strike rate!

Over the last few years we have consistently had players in the best U22 teams. It really is a testament to our recruiting and development teams in firstly being able to identify talent and then to develop it.

On Milera, he will be a star in 2019. I think he makes the AA squad but not the team given that the selectors like to see some sustained form over a couple of seasons before selecting a player to the team.

Oh and he will be a Norm Smith Medalist in 2019 too! :D

"Will be" - if he stays at half back, one of the best players in the team, a top 5 player.

Milera finished high in the time trial at the start of last preseason too before he developed knee tendinitis. I’m pretty sure he finished top 5 last year.

I think Milera will be tagged at some point this season. At which point he will become invisible for some weeks at least while he figures it out.

I am not convinced about making Milera an inside mid.

I see us closest to the Hawthorn midfield pattern. Several high skill contest winning slowish players in close. Accept being outnumbered at times by other teams who may really swamp the ball. Aim to break even in raw numbers, but make more efficient use of the ones we get.

Keep our outside runners in Seedsman and Milera to slice teams up with every possession just like the Hawks did with Smith and Hill.

I do not see a quick inside mid as a need. Or at least not enough of a need that I would sacrifice potentially a first rate outside runner.

Milera getting tagged is very unlikely. After all, that means freeing up Sloane.

I think having an inside mid who can burst away from the stoppage is handy though. Other teams did it to us all year, taking advantage of our refusal to run defensively. I also want Milera, Seedsman, Gallucci and the Rat to be racking up the inside 50's in 2019. If anyone handballs it to Jacobs to bomb inside 50, they should be automatically dropped the next week.

I dont think he will.ever be a pure stoppage player like Matt Crouch.

He could be the next guy in the chain after the initial stoppage. Hence his evasive skills and quick hands will be important as there is still congestion. But his hand and foot skills to move the ball on quick to targets further down the ground.

More akin to what I call an Attacking mid than Pure Inside Mid.

Having midfielders with some pace and ability to defend/chase is also vital as our history has shown. Cannot have too many plodders no matter how good they are at winning the ball, because they wont win every contest.

Of the 3 mids at the bounce, it would be nice to have at least 1 of the 3 with genuine explosiveness, and 1 of the other 2 should have 'reasonable' pace as well.

Gibbs and the Crouch brothers?
