Sack the coach after 6 months?

Drop Baker and Graham back to the WAFL?

Come on mate.
We got a pretty much fully fit list, picked up three "senior" players in the offseason, had a full preseason together, and we're performing worse than ever (which pains me to say it), IF (that's IF, it can still be turned around yet) it continues then yeah he probably needs to go, I personally think he's in over his head here, we're probably in need of a more experienced coach for now. Then get someone like Mini in the future.

Edit: Also re: Graham and Baker, we're not trying to win games anymore, we're trying to build a team, and those two haven't been very good, so as may as well give experience to the younger guys in hopes of building them all up together as quick as possible.

You don't need to double down on having the dumbest take I've seen on this so far.

1. He'll have a free pass until at least the end of next season.

2. We're performing better than previous seasons, as indicating by out uptick in certain metrics(turnovers/forward half turnovers) which Mini stated he wanted as part of the gameplan. We're also not getting smashed like we would in previous years on the scoreboard, which we absolutely would've under Simpson with the same discrepancies in clearances/contested ball.

3. We had an experienced, premiership coach before him. How was that working out?

4. Graham and Baker aren't there to help us win a flag, they're there to help implement the gameplan and set standards.

Hmm, kinda agree with him TBH. It's all well and good having piles of cash just sitting in the bank. They aren't like a public company who pay dividends etc, or a privately own business looking out for their own personal wealth.

Pay the tax for a couple years and get the best people money can buy in and around the club.

Because it's not WCE's money, it's the WAFC's.

Sounds wonderful until you realise how much money we would be throwing at the AFL to do so - increasing each year we go over our cap.

Say we exceed the cap by $500,000 to get the best coaches in - & let's face it, if we want to keep them, we'll need to keep paying them. So, we'll be exceeding that for a while.

First year - we get taxed $1,000,000, twice what we're paying our fancy new coaches.
Second year - tax increases to 1,500,000
Third year and beyond - tax jumps to $2,000,000, 4x what we're paying our new people.

That money goes straight to the AFL to no doubt prop up other clubs. The AFL has made exceeding the cap REALLY unappealing.

"The AFL is desperately trying to boost the number of Indigenous players (so) there’s a way this has got to fit...”

Good for us (potentially), but DEI is dumb idea and any person in authority who thinks it's a good idea should be cavity searched and frog marched to the door.

“There will be a request at some stage there for special assistance. It’s not a priority pick, because the AFL just doesn’t give out priority picks anymore."

"The League confirmed North Melbourne will receive the following: One end-of-first round selection in the 2023 AFL Draft (currently pick 19) Two end-of-first round selections in the 2024 AFL Draft (currently picks 19 and 20)"

The AFL is a billion dollar organisation overall and the clubs turn over tens of millions a year but footy is a minnow compared to the US, UK and Europe. Players are well paid compared to the average Joe, but there are way more people getting paid the average AFL salary outside the AFL compared to inside. If you a highly paid doctor or lawyer or whatever you also don't have to retire at 35 and find something else to do. Average salaries in the EPL are GBP3-4m a year and the top players get 20m. If you are getting tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds a week money stops being a consideration.

The NBA veteran's minimum is $2.2m a year, so about $3.3m in our money. They talk about max contract players making $60m a year and that being generational money, but someone like JaVale McGee has bounced around the league for 15 years earning mostly minimum deals and has career earnings of $80m. Gary Ablett Jr and Buddy Franklin would've made $10m+ but there's a reason that Will Schofield and Xavier Ellis are doing radio and TV and podcasts. Playing in the AFL affords you a great life but it's not 100 ft yachts in Monaco territory.
That's why a kid should choose always basketball over AFL if they are a decent chance to make it in the NBA, rather than choosing AFL for the "love of the game".
If they're only good enough to an NBL or B-League player, then AFL would probably still be a better choice. That is most likely the situation for those that choose AFL. Similarly with other sports.

1 in a million get to NBA but if you are even reasonably stand out ish in AFL you'll make millions over a mediocre career with a good manager

The pregame fireworks aren't cheap guys.

We should be absolutely taking the piss with our $ advantages, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't get thrown a bone from a playing list perspective thanks to the complete rort that is the national draft.

Good post but what happens now .. just keep going down the same path ?

If travel is the biggest issue has the club and are the players willing to spend a few weeks over east in a hub to reduce the travel load ? . We saw the hub last time and it screwed us

What do we do ?
The covid hub wasn't exactly by choice, it was a different world at the time. Surely it would be a bit different if it's on the players' terms and there is certainty around it?

Other then 2018 everything has been downhill since for WCE , now really bad .
Fremantle probably made the finals once since 2018 also .
I think Optus Stadium has a football curse! , normally WA football performs well even in our poor seasons .....
Spooky .
We've lost our advantage .

“There are lots of ways they can make a really smart, clever bid for special assistance that would not give them pick one, but might give them multiple NGA (Next Generation Academy) spots. It might give them Category B spots, it might allow them to access some state-league players (and) pre-list them before the draft.”

Is an end of first round selection considered a priority pick?

yeah same thing with soccer etc. sure the best get paid more but the pool of talent you are competing against is much higher. much smaller odds of making it
