Not a bad spread of the age group to be honest. This year we've lost (age at beginning of next season if they were still on the list):
- Sandi - 37y 3m (B22)
- Ballantyne - 32y 8m (Borderline)
- Bennell - 27y 5m (B22 if he was ever fit, but have to say not)
- Kersten - 27y (Peel)
- BHill - 26y 8m (B22)
- Jones - 24y 2m (Peel)
- Langdon - 24y 1m (B22)
- Nyhuis - 23y 6m (Peel)
Realistically - three B22 players, one borderline, one chronically injured, three Peel.
Average age for all these players - 27y 10m
Average age for B22 players: 29y 4m (yes, Sandi skews that, but still that's what it is)
B22 players 28+ start of 2020 season (considered veterans??):
- Mundy: 34y 8m - 316 games (hope he stays B22 and doesn't finish out his illustrious career at Peel...)
- SHill: 29y 11m - 206 games
- Walters: 29y 3m - 151 games
- Fyfe: 28y 6m (might just squeeze him into B22) - 173 games
B22 players 24-27 at start of 2020 season:
- Conca: 27y 7m - 126 games
- Lobb: 27y - 89 games
- Hamling: 26y 11m - 85 games
- Taberner: 26y 9m - 71 games
- Wilson: 26y 2m - 116 games
- Hughes: 25y 3m - 50 games
- Hogan: 25y 1m - 83 games
- Pearce: 24y 9m - 53 games
- Ryan: 24y 1m - 49 games
B22 players 23 and under at start of 2020 season:
- Tucker: 23y 4m - 70 games
- Darcy: 21y 9m - 26 games
- Cerra: 20y 5m - 41 games
- Brayshaw: 20y 4m - 39 games
Borderline B22 (IMO)
- Matera: 28y (just borderline) - 139 games
- McCarthy: 25y - 69 games
- Switkowski: 23y 6m - 20 games
- Duman: 21y 11m - 24 games
- Logue: 21y 11m - 23 games
There's an excellent spread of ages in the team - that would be considered pretty good with the bulk of our players in the 24-27 range. Our best player is over 28, but probably has 4-5 years left in him. We'd hope Walters has got 3-4 years - he should be okay if he's moved permanently into the forward line. Hill, if he gets fit should have a couple of good years, maybe 2-3 seeing he's missed a lot of footy and not been through all the crash and bash on his body, and we all know this will be Mundy's last year.
We've got some excellent players in the middle range, some good foot soldiers, but the superstar in waiting in Brayshaw is only 20 years old, and Tucker and Cerra are going to be B grade players at worst.
Where we fall down is the number of games played. The players who have played 50 or less: Darcy, Brayshaw Cerra, Ryan, Hughes; and then 50-100: Pearce, Tucker, Taberner, Hogan, Hamling, Lobb. Half of our best 22 have played less than 100 games. Is that a problem? Maybe yes, maybe no.
Anyway tl:dr - age wise we look great on paper, games played - a little inexperienced.
Start of the 2019 season, I didnt think freo were capable of making finals. They should of if it wasnt for injuries.
I have Stated Next season freo should make finals provided the list is healthy and have a finals run of 3-4 years in a row before Stephen Hill, Walters and fyfe retire.
Saying that, theres 9 players aged 24-27 in our best 22. 5 of those 9 players were traded in. Proves our drafting around 2012-15 when freo made finals has bit us on the Bum, er I mean kim Kardashian to a degree
