What was Slatterys roll last night?

Well I'm no coach but I'd say it would be something to do with being a small defender -- shutting down a player, getting involved with the link-ups out of defence. Whilst Slattery didn't totally shut down Schneider (as danielgb123 said, Schnieder still did things), he forced him out of his preffered role, keeping him goalless in the process.

I dunno if you're having a go at Slattery, but just in general, anyone who's knocking him in the light of the last couple of weeks are definitely running on prejudice.

Does anyone have the stats of the players Slatts has played on this year?
I would love to know how well he has shut down his opponents.
I am pretty sure Slatts has kept most of the small goal kicking fowards he has played on from having a major impact on the scoreboard and even some in games.

Slattery seems to have improved a bit, but this doesn't change the fact he is terrible in marking contests, too slow to keep up with leading players, a poor decision maker, doesn't know when to leave his man to help his fellow defenders and provides little or no offensive pressure. He is a problem, and he needs to keep improving or we would be better off playing someone else in his position.

oh ffs.

A common element of all this Slattery bashing is a lack of hard evidence. It's just "he does this, he doesn't do that". A while a go you could give evidence for his inadequacies by pointing to frees he gave away, goals kicked against him, disposal inefficiency, etc . You could maybe even point to someone who was doing a good enough small defender job in the VFL to replace.

But this year he's worked many of those things out of his game. So until he slips into old habits, shut up and support the kid for a while. It's a rewarding way to be a fan.

IMO the Slattery hate comes from the fact he runs like a ****. Seriously his running style looks like someone shoved a hive of beez up his clacker

Is this thread some sort of a joke?

I have been one of the biggest critics of Slattery but he can't be faulted as of late.

He has been keeping his opponents in check and even getting a fair bit of the ball.

Ontop of this he has actually been one of the best users of the ball this season and that is saying something. I reckon his disposal has improved out of sight and i now feel quite confident with him disposing it.

His brain fades have also become far far less frequent. This may be a result of him gaining confidence.

The OP is a dead set flog.

The other thing that should be mentioned is who would replace Slattery anyway? After Lucas got dropped this moronic Essendon supporter called up SEN going off his nut about KNights dropping Lucas but keeping Slattery in the team. Nimrod's like him have no idea.

What part do you disagree with? Do you think he's quick? Does he make good decisions? Does he give us any run? Is he good in the air?

Instead of harping on your supposed theories of his deficiencies, how about praising what he brings to the table. He has that mongrel we would otherwise be lacking is a true fighter and as has been pointed out has been effective in neutralizing opponents if not beating them completely.

Hirdy had no left foot and wasn't Usain Bolt in a foot race either but he turned out all right!

I hope I am wrong about Slattery. He has definately improved, I'll give him that, and his form the last couple of weeks has been good enough to keep his spot, but i just don't see the upside to him. He has too many deficiencies and he doesn't match well with our game plan because he doesn't create any run. There is no doubting his courage, application or anything that is under his control, but this just isn't enough. I look forward to him hopefully proving me wrong, but he will need to continue to improve to do so.

I wasn't a big wrap for the guy in years gone by but now i see why.

He isn't in the side coz of his skills.

He is there to do a job on a dangerous small forward which he has been doing well and not to mention he is as tough as bloody nails which we don't have alot of and is needed.

Exactly, Slatts should be judged on the job he does shutting down his opponent, because that's his role on the team! Why doesn't everybody understand that?
Tayte Pears has the exact same role as Slatts, but on the bigger foward, yet no one is bagging him!

He got the job done on a hot Eddie Betts (probably eddie's worst game so far this year), Matt Campbell (I think that's who he played on against the Roos) and Paul Medhurst (his worst game of the year).
Did a decent job on Cyril Rioli while he was playing foward and got some ball himself. I thought he looked very composed when he had the ball in that game.
And minimsed Adam Schneider's impact on the scoreboard. Adam was coming off 3 and 5 goal matches in the past two weeks.

And the comment about Slatts not matching our game plan is awful and makes no sense. If all our defenders had the same role of run and carry, we would be burned on turnovers and our game plan would be flawed.
Plus, you rarely see Tayte Pears part of our running out of defense game plan, so we might as well drop him, cos he doesn't match our game plan either

It's the role of Dempsey, Fletcher, Houli, Hooker, L-M, McPhee, Lovett etc to create the run from defense.

If a football team is going to be successful, it can't be one dimensional. You NEED different sorts of players that can do a variety of jobs. And no one else can do Slatts' job. Period.

I applaud Slatts and the job he has to do every week on the dangerous small fowards. He has been doing his job and that's all is required of him.
Keep it up!
