Coming out of our backline we don't really have a playmaker- someone who sets up play and uses the ball really well.

waite gives us run but his kicking is bad and walker's kicking isnt that good either.

most teams have a playmaker from defense- adelaide- mcleod
brisbane- drummond
collingwood- h shaw
geelong- mackie, milburn
hawthorn- ladson
port adelaide- p burgoyne
richmond- j bowden
western bulldogs- gilbee, hargrave
sydney- kennelly

i think we need someone who can deliver the ball well out of the backline as this is something that we lack. also this player would take the kickouts- another major issue we face.

Scotland goes ok. Hurley has goof skills and a penetrating kick so if we Draft him he could become a very good playmaker down back(if we play him there as opposed to forward)

Isn't he a KP??

Drummond would be the one i would like most out of that list. Not only a playmaker but a booming kick.

However i feel Goddard is the best of the lot and can stop a forward which i feel lets Heath Scotland down:o

ye i understand we have scotland but he is a midfielder as well.
he plays on the wing quite a bit.
im talking about a gilbee, drummond type that have lovely disposal and play soley as defenders.

ye thats what im trying to get at. we need someone like drummond so we have a weapon coming out of defense. and also drummond is a playmaker when he plays his best footy.

This is Scotland's exact role in our team!! I think he's is in fantastic form, and was extra good on the weekend. He is consistantly in our best players, and i always feel safe when the ball is in his hands in defensive 50!

yes but he isnt a gilbee, drummond type that drills these sizzling balls lace out.

scotland is also a midfielder as well as i mentioned in a post below.

Scotland, Walker and Houlihan have shared this type of role over the years.

Only Walker has been great at shutting down his man, Hoops has had some notable victories and Scotty can't shut anyone down.

Scotland and Hoops probably use the ball better going forwards.

Carrazzo has been doing the job of late and Thornton is the other one we usually direct play through, but not really your running type.

Grigg has the run and foot skills, and I'm sure in the future is earmarked for this type of role. Together with Armfield who has good run and good skills, they may be more what you are looking for Setant.

Will take some time.

I also rate Austin. His reading of the play is quite good, is fairly athletic, and has good disposal.
With Bower and Jammo, in years to come I can see us having an attacking defence not disimilar to the Cats, who not only get a lot of run from Milburn, Mackie and Wojcinski, but also Scarlett and Harley.

Waite will go back up forward as soon as Aussie earns his stripes.:thumbsu:

ye good post. armfield will be a star. but i would still love a gilbee type player in our team!

Bower:thumbsu: He has good disposal coming off half back and will get even better as he is still a youngster. Austin lacks confidence at AFL level at the moment but reads the play well and hopefully will contribute and take thorntons spot by 09/10

Bower's disposal has gotten better.......that is to say he doesn't treat the footy like a hot potatoe anymore.

Not sure he will ever develop the elite footskills that Setanta is talking about.

Grigg the most likely IMO.:thumbsu:

Yeh forgot about Grigg but honestly think Bower will show that he has superior foot skills. Showed in early games this year he could hit targets coming off half back quite successfully.

Agree there, although Scotland is playing very well in that role at the moment. Provides good attack, and while his defensive skills aren't great, he does read the ball well and chops off many opposition attacks.

^^^^^
Bower and Grigg will never have foot skills to hurt any body...

They both hold the ball to vertical and lose distance as well as acuccaracy because of it.

Walker could be one but his skills aren't all that damaging either.

Steele Sidebottom and Daniel Rich footskills are what we need...

The Geelong way is the way to go - have a few of them
With only one main man eg Shaw Gram etc - they are tending to get tagged
With Scotland Arms Bower Grigg (Waite?) we can develop a nice mix :thumbsu:

Yes but the Geelong ones are also very good defenders.

Can our players do both?

scotland is doing a better job than the players bolded and not far off the others as well!

note: we had a crack at getting drummond for this year, and nearly got him....do agree a player like him would be nice!

I think we'll have to draft a playmaker unless Grigg or Bower can step up another gear and become a Christou-type running HBF with a damaging kick.

Suban might be available at our second pick if we're very lucky.

From the AFL prospectus publication.
Nick Suban General Defender 179cm
North Ballarat 9/05/1990 78kg

Suban averaged 19 disposals per game in the 2007 TAC Cup where his kicking efficiency of 76% ranked in the elite category. He can play all over the ground and works hard when not in possession, averaging five tackles per game last year. Suban was named in the All-Australian team at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships where he ranked in the top three in division one in kicks, long kicks and rebound 50s and won a large portion of his possessions in an uncontested manner.
We might have to trade to get Suban or a player of his reputation and class by foot.

He might fall considering he's only 179 cms tall.

I hope we make it a priority to draft footballers who can kick and win the ball ahead of outside players and bloody athletes.

show me a defender who does not concede goals at times........the MC know Scotland has weaknesses in one on one roles, hence why he is our quarter back type player......he is always matched to a forward so that he can play a more attacking role for us.
You will always get exposed in this role at times, but if you can set up more goals than you concede, it's a win for the team.

Do you think the Shaws, Drummond, Grams, McLeods, Johncocks, Ladsons etc don't get goals kicked on them.........think again!

Players in bold you can't compare to scotland.

Scotland can't defend to save his life, against sydney he got exposed bad, he just can't defend 1 on 1, absoloutely hopeless.Same with carrazzo.

There just filling gaps until our youngsters come on, but I won't call for their heads, they try hard and are semi decent players so I'll continue to support them.
