Tonight was probably our 'best' loss for the season. A lot of positives came out of it.

Brad Green was magnificent. Really looks like a midfielder, might have to eat ny words about him.

Peter Walsh! Excellent game from Whopper.

Junior and Browny got lots of the ball.

Rivers, Arma and Thommo showed plenty.

Credit where credit is due.

The Demons played a fine game of footy against Port, they made a lot of the running, they restricted Port, they did many things well.

From my point of view, Port looked a little more polished in finishing off a few forward thrusts.

Well played Demons, they played a lot better than a 14th placed team should play, against the top team on their own dung hill.

I don't think I've ever been as happy with a loss. We made some mistakes but just didnt give up all night and showed we still have the players to play some good footy.

Armstrong and Thompson are the main reasons I'm so happy. I had some doubts on Armstrongs ability to win the ball and Thompsons skill level and smarts and whether they were the right players for us, but I think they answered that tonight.
Thompson in particular could be the Ricciuto type player we've been missing.

Why Whelan hasnt been played in the middle more often is a mystery to me. He is an absoloute star.

Green and Robertson were good, but didnt do anything to convince me they shouldn't be used to get a centre half forward, another midfielder or a good crumbing forward at trade time.

Also I think we should hold onto all or most of our half back flankers. We have plenty of them and could probably afford to let go of one, but I really don't think we'd get back anything near what they could be worth at another club. They reminded me tonight that they are the best group of attacking defenders in the league. They may not be as accountable as some, but give them a good midfield, a centre half forward and Neitz and they can be the most damaging.

FWIW, my votes:
3. McDonald
2. Brown

It must be frustrating being a Melbourne supporter. Seriously. Every time I see them up close against Port they're impressive. They get numbers behind the ball, they run it out in overlapping waves and isolate Neitz or Robertson in the forward 50. And against us those two generally finish with laser precision ... and Neitz always seems to get a bag. I was glad our old nemesis party Vardy wasn't out there last night ...

Yet I'll see them a couple of weeks later against a middle of the roader or struggler and it all seems to turn to dust and disarray ... Robertson can't find the ball, Neitz is down back after kicking 1.5 getting really frustrated, there's no run, Vardy is injured or on the bench .... like I said it must be frustrating.
